Most sellers are not producing quality that can help to satisfy all your needs. so you might rely upon google local guides or checking reviews but they might be fishy and can result in a bad purchase.
You should ask targeted questions to those sellers so that your shopping results are worth buying. You may ask questions like, I sleep hot please tell me what are the best duvets or pillows combination for me? Or you may ask as per your sleeping positions as I sleep on my back, side, and stomach.
A wide range of duvet and duvet covers are available on Amazon and in different sizes like twin full queen, twin xl, full queen king, and California king. Duvet inserts are available in different color patterns to choose any of the highest thread counts.
Once you know enough about what you want, It’s time to buy bedding products:
Wool room was founded in 2008 by Jo Dawson, the fourth generation of a Bradford wool merchant family. Wool room’s goal was to also break the stigma surrounding wool. It has commonly been viewed as a fiber that is more suitable for cooler climates, that is difficult to care for, and is itchy and scratchy to touch or wear.
The idea of LILYSILK was conceived by Lily Lin in January 2010, after having spent more than a decade working in France's silk industry. Lily's idea was to disrupt the prevailing business model where retailers realized huge profits, customers paid huge premiums, and the silk workers remained in relative poverty.

As we grow up we realize that even though a pillow's basic purpose is to support our head and neck while we sleep, that is not all it does. The right pillow can make all the difference in your sleep during the night as well as in your life throughout the day.
Did you ever notice we humans spend one-third of our life sleeping!! Yes, a good night’s sleep is vital for every person but so is making sure you get a comfortable sound sleep.
How do you like to sleep? Are you a side, back, or stomach sleeper or do you like to switch between the three?? This is one of the questions you should be asking yourself when pillow shopping because it could help you make the right decision when choosing the perfect pillow.
Regardless of whether you like to sleep on your side, back or stomach, it is important that you keep your neck and back in the proper alignment in order to get a better good night’s sleep. Keeping your spine in line is very important as it is one of the factors that determine your health.
Experts and doctors recommend that you take a pillow that helps keep your neck and back in alignment; your neck should be parallel to your mattress and at the same time adapt to the position you sleep in whether it’s the neck, back, stomach, or all three.
If you are a side sleeper you might want to choose a pillow that is firmer and thicker. Whereas if you are a stomach or back sleeper you may want to choose a pillow that is thinner.
It is totally understandable that you may prefer a particular fill or you may have a budgetary concern when shopping for your pillow, but you should not base your opinion on just getting a good pillow based on a higher price; the more expensive pillow does not always mean the best. The best should be the one that feels the best, one that you feel comfortable sleeping on!
Let’s get right to understand what is the best pillow based on your sleeping position!!
Your sleeping position is a major factor when deciding the best kind of pillow for you. Does not matter which country you sleep in, you can find the right pillow for you wherever you like!
Did you know?
More than 70 percent of people sleep on their sides. Even though most people are likely to toss and turn to change their sleeping positions throughout the night, very few like to sleep on their backs or stomach.
Irrespective of how you sleep, let's see which is the best pillow based on your sleeping position!!
Hello to side sleepers, like Moi! We do consist of more than half of the people who sleep on their sides. Won’t lie I can never decide which side is better and keep tossing and turning all night!
A thicker and higher pillow is recommended for side sleepers as it can adequately support the neck and the head while keeping your shoulders in an aligned position. You could also keep a rolled towel or small round pillow under the neck for additional support.
Adding additional support between the knees also helps support the spine.
Another way you could invest in a good side pillow is to get a body pillow; these are as big as the length of your body and also firmer than a traditional pillow.
These pillows offer medium support from one side and firmer support from the other. Isn’t this great? This is a very low and not a big puffy pillow. It is perfect for both side and back sleepers. It helps give ideal support to your head and neck. And this also has a ventilated advanced airflow design to make your night more comfortable.
A Natural Bamboo filled bed pillow is ideal for people who like the puffy pillow that is perfect for being in between firm and medium support. These pillows are also great texture-wise, as they tend to be silky soft. If you are into eco-friendly lifestyle trends, these are just the perfect pillows for you to help hit those sustainability goals for years to come.
However, a study conducted by spine-health.com mentions some participants reported cervical stiffness after waking up from sleeping on feather pillows. Feather and down-filled pillows tend to be very soft and can easily get flattened from the middle; this could make you feel uncomfortable. May also wake some people up in the middle of the night! So, it is better to be sure of what you prefer before making a purchase!
When sleeping on your back, your pillow should be able to support your spine as a natural curvature with adequate support under your neck, head, and back. For back sleepers, experts suggest you go for a pillow with a lower height.
Back sleepers prefer something more flat and soft that can provide you additional support while also enabling you to have a comfortable sleep. If you are someone who experiences neck or back pain, then sleeping on your back or side is recommended.
Memory Foam Bed Pillows are the best choices. Since our sleep position is such a personal choice think about the way you sleep to help you decide.
One of the best pillows to prevent neck pain in back sleepers for side sleepers is the MLILY Tundra Gel Infused Memory Foam Pillow. This pillow is made with a layer of cooling gel technology designed to absorb heat and produce a cool sensation for a refreshing and comfortable pillow temperature. This added gel sheet manages and regulates body temperature and adjusts to your custom needs, providing the optimum and most comfortable sleeping environment.
Along with that cervical pillows; also made using memory foam can contribute to spinal alignment and reduce neck pain.
These pillows can easily conform to the shape of your neck, but they can also flatten easily and might need to be more often- you’ll likely want to swap out your feather pillows every year or so.
Feather Down Pillow are great neck supporters that is perfect for back sleepers.
Tip: If you are using a feather or down-filled pillow you may want to fluff it up every morning while making your bed.
Another one of the best pillows to prevent neck pain for back sleepers is the Down Under Washable Wool Bed Pillow. This pillow contains removable wool so all you have to do is open it up and adjust its firmness level. Ta-Da!!
I am already in love with this pillow. Not only is it adjustable to my comfort level but is also easily washable.
As for someone with small kids in the house, washable bedding is a blessing!!
Wool’s natural and breathable abilities help keep it fresh for a long time while also wicking away moisture for a better sleeping environment at all times.
We carry many memory pillows to prevent neck pain in back sleepers. This pillow comes with cooling gel technology that helps absorb and dissipate heat from your pillow; this in turn helps keep you cool during the night.
If you are a back sleeper looking for a premium quality pillow for neck pain, you can grab the affordable MLILY TUNDRA Pillow and begin enjoying safe, blissful, and comfortable sleep.
Many people also like to use a small rounded pillow to support their neck while laying on a flat pillow. And some like to add a pillow under your knee to help support the lower back.
This is one of the least preferred options out there as it puts a lot of stress on the neck and back. But needless to say, some people find this a comfortable position to sleep in and we are here to recommend a better pillow to improve your make your good night’s sleep.
Goose-down pillows come at different support levels but Goose-down always becomes flat a pancake in the morning needs to be shaken to loft up again but nothing beats the softness of Goose-down. If you love a dreamy soft fluffy pillow, then this is your go-to option!
You can position your pillow the way you prefer. Here at Down Under Bedding, we understand that Everybody Sleeps Differently, which is why we have something for everyone.
All-rounder…..Do you toss and turn around a lot throughout the night?
If you answered Yes! Then this one is for you.
Most people tend to move around all the time in different sleep positions and that is why we recommend the Washable Wool Pillow where you can open up the inside to adjust the firm-level you need. This pillow is proudly Made in Canada and YES you can wash this wool pillow.
For a complete guide on Choosing the Best Luxury Down pillows; check out our blog on it.
Regardless of how you like to sleep, whether, on your back, neck, or stomach, it is essential that you get a good night’s sleep during the night so that you can wake up well-rested. It is totally fine to switch your sleeping positions once in a while but remember to avoid sleeping on your stomach too often.
If you are comfortable with the pillow choice you have then you should not worry, but if you do feel that you are waking up in pain and unrested then there is a need to be concerned.
]]>No other bedding size is named after a location so what makes the California King size so special? This is a really fun urban mystery that to this day does not have one definitive answer that everybody can agree on. Although the most popular theory does seem to be that they were a post-war invention.
After World War II a Californian mattress store owner created a bed 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. He created these beds to accommodate the large average house size that people in Los Angeles enjoyed. His assumption was that people who live in large houses like royalty would love large beds! And boy was he right, his new custom beds and covers sold like hotcakes!
You thought King size was the biggest? Think again! The crown has fallen! the king is dead, long live the king! The new king, the California King.
Check out our California King Size White Down Duvet and Oversized King Duvet Comforter Size
It has become a general assumption that this size is larger than King size but that is not exactly true. California King size is indeed 4 inches longer than regular King size, but it has 4 inches less width than the King size.
This size is perfect for people looking for a little extra legroom (anyone over 6 feet here?) sleeping in the California King size with a partner and being prepared for a tighter snuggle because of the reduced width compared to a King Sized cover. King-sized is still the king of romance; its width makes it the best for couples and gives it the edge over the California King.
These are the main considerations to keep in mind when choosing between King and California King Mattresses. Here is a quick summary of our recommendations:
We recommend California King size for the following people:
We recommend King for the following people:
Super King is actually not the same as California King. Super King is more common in the UK. Not as large as the California King size and even smaller than King size! This is kind of odd if you think about it, the super King is actually smaller than the King size, but hey our friends across the pond do things differently and have more power than them right?
Whilst the super king bed is one of the bigger beds that you can find on the market, it comes in at 72 by 78 inches. Due to the sheer fact that it is considered an “oversized mattress.” It is skinnier and shorter than what you would expect from a standard king-size mattress.
Remember the story we told you earlier about how the Californian mattress owner invented California King size for big houses in Los Angeles? You’ll need your bedroom’s dimensions to match that royal living! It needs to be at least 12 x 12 feet to fit the mattress comfortably considering it needs to be put in a bed frame.
You will most likely have other furniture in the room as well, how will you go out looking fly if you don’t have a vanity mirror to do your makeup or comb your hair before you leave? Whoops did I forget to mention leaving room for walking space as well? You will need to plan everything accordingly before you dip into the California King size!
Super king beds are actually not that popular of mattress size and a lot of the time you will need a made-to-order one, so you will have to dig a little on the internet to find who in your area can make one for you and your needs!
If no one makes them in your area, look for companies that offer free international shipping, although you may need to watch out for duties be careful! Since we typically have to order a custom super king mattress, it is highly likely it will be more expensive than the more popular mattress sizes available to the general public.
Also, due to the fact that very few Super King-sized mattresses exist in the wild, there will be minor size discrepancies depending on who has manufactured said mattress. Be sure to double-check and verify the exact length and width of the mattresses before committing to a purchase. This is also a good idea to do before committing to any accessories to go along with your new bed! Silk Duvet anyone?
Not every bedding company can make bed sheets for a super king mattress size, so it can be difficult to find bed sheets to match the mattress. Just like the custom-made mattresses, the sheets usually have to be custom-made as well. And when it comes to mattress supports and frame, you will have to get a bed set or foundation custom sized for your mattress.
Check out this video from Boulevard Homes to learn more about the difference of King vs California King.
Most companies have higher prices on California king mattresses than on your run-of-the-mill king-sized beds, due to the fact that the California King is such a niche market. Keep in mind that although the price point is mostly similar/comparable between the two sizes, bed owners will come to discover that California King bed accessories are just as rare and usually cost a lot more than King bed accessories.
Bed frames, box springs, sheets, and other bed add-ons are often more pricey for the California king than comparable items for the king mattress beds. There are simply a narrower variety of options for accessories when it comes to California king. Which is why they are both harder to find and sit at a higher price point.
Whom do you share your bed with? Roll around in the sheets with? Wake up beside and stare at them while they sleep thinking it's cute and then realize it's a little creepy? Well If you spend nights alone there is no problem with that either!
It makes your decision all the easier. if you are a solo sleeper, the only factor to consider in your decision-making process here is how tall you are, and if you don’t want your pedicured feet to dangle off of the foot of your bed! If you are tall, the go-to mattress will have to be a California King.
If you find yourself on the shorter end of the human spectrum, don’t fret! You might not be able to see past people in a crowd or concert but you have the uncanny ability to choose either the standard King or California King; both will work well. If you cuddle up and share your bed with a partner/significant other every night, you will likely adore the substantial width of the standard king mattress.
On the flip side of things, new parents sharing their bed with a small or newborn child should almost always choose a standard king mattress for maximum comfort. The extra four inches of width can make a huge and pleasant difference when it comes to optimizing sleep comfort. Another aspect to look at is if you are a pet parent or have a fur baby who does not mind sharing their bed with dogs, cats, and other pets, the California king will likely be the far superior mattress to choose, as its extended length ensures your animals can cuddle up and sleep at the foot of the bed without disturbing your slumber.
How tall are you and the people you share your bed with? People who are gifted with height (not me) and are 6 feet tall and over will really enjoy the extended mattress length that the California king size can offer. albeit, this is not always a boon, it also depends on your preferred sleeping position.
Let’s break this down a little bit, tall people who sleep on their sides will find that both the King and Super King size options will likely work as well as each other, as most people who sleep on their sides curl up in a ball of bliss and sweet dreams. People who sleep on their backs or their stomachs will need to pay a lot more attention to the length of the bed.
There are also some visual and aesthetic considerations that one should keep in mind relating to how large your bedroom is. We recommend leaving around 30 inches of area in between each side of your bed and the four walls of the bedroom that you love so much. For a more luxurious feel, you can leave more space between each side of the bed.
Some people reside in smaller rooms, and that can be amazing too! Both the California King mattress and King mattress can feel too oversized, and make a small room feel more cramped than you would like. As long as your room is large enough, the only consideration here is whether you have a broader room in which case a king-sized mattress would fit better or, a narrower room in which case a California king-sized mattress would be a better fit, in addition to being more visually pleasing.
Before making a big bed or mattress purchase, it is always best to be sure to measure very meticulously what the dimensions of your bedroom are. The home’s entryway, and any staircases and doorways that you’ll need to pass by.
Both king and California king mattresses can be extremely difficult to move. You might need to hire some people to help you out (or tell your friends you will buy them drinks if they help you), but there are unique circumstantial considerations for both. The extra length of California king mattresses makes them more troublesome to get around stairwells and sharp corners, while the extra width of standard kings makes them scarily unable to fit through many doorways of course it can fit, but measure beforehand just in case!
What a loaded question! You know rules are made to be broken right? Why not get a little risky and break them? The first thought and common sense might lead towards the obvious answer that yes the duvet insert and duvet cover should be the same size. But you can actually get away with having the duvet cover a little smaller! When you put the duvet inside the slightly undersized duvet, cover the duvet fluffs up inside and add extra volume to add extra comfort! See? being a rebel has its perks.
There it is! All you need to know about the California King size! Any other questions? Please shoot us a message on our website chat, and a verified sleep expert will be there to answer any questions you have! Bye for now, see you next Wednesday!

]]>Duvet covers can come in all shapes and sizes, but never judge a book by its cover. What matters is the inside. A quick google search will quickly unveil the myriad of different options available to stuff your duvet with. No matter which crevasse of the internet you explore undoubtedly you will come to one common perception: Down & Feather duvets are the most popular.
So, if down & feather are the most popular, why not go with one of those? Well, you certainly could! But it's never wise to settle down before looking at all your options, is it? And although they have excellent reasons to be the most popular duvets, we are here to discuss some duvet alternatives for you.
Down & feather fillings are the cool kids on the block, They both have high “fill power values” meaning they can trap large amounts of air, keeping things light, fluffy, and insulated especially Down Under Bedding's Goose Down Duvet that's so comfortable! Down & feather do indeed come from the same place normally geese or ducks. But this doesn’t mean they are the same, whilst feathers are just that—feathers, down is a protective fiber from the bellies of the birds. This allows down to be the better insulator while giving feathers an upper hand in firmness.
Now, the kicker for these fills is a bit upfront in nature. Firstly these are animal products, if you are looking for animal-friendly natural products these fillings are not for you. Secondly, since we are talking about the cream of the crop when it comes to duvet fills, we can also add a hefty price tag to that title, down & feather does not come cheap. Well, with this being said, these two options are not your only ones! Let's explore some more alternatives that are available to you:
Popular kids stand aside—The weird kids are coming.
Wool, just the thought of it makes me feel cozy and warm! It is made from the hair or fur of a variety of different types of animals, which can include sheep, goats, alpacas, llamas, camels, and rabbits(cute!).
Down Under's Natural Wool duvet is an alternative and generally sits at a more affordable price point, which makes it appealing. The hair from these animals can be made into yarn or spun, which is then woven into a material that can be used for many purposes, such as duvet filling. Most wool bedding in the USA and Canada is made from sheep's wool. Unlike many other products, wool is naturally flame resistant, which gives it another upper hand on the fabric market; safe and reliable. Since wool has a natural ability to absorb moisture, it can ‘wick’ it away. As a duvet alternative, this helps keep your body’s temperature regulated and nice. On top of all that, it is hypoallergenic too! So, no more Achoo!
Wool has many things going for it, but like most things in life; it is not perfect. If you are searching for something as a duvet alternative, then, this is not it as wool comes a certain level of heft. Although wool duvets are not as heavy as weighted blankets, they are still on the heavier side of the bedding. This is still an animal product, so if this is something that bothers you then stay away from this choice (but I promise we will talk about some animal-free duvet alternatives as well)!
Ah! Silk is so smooth, luxurious, and soft. Silk is harvested from the cocoons of silkworms, they are a hypoallergenic protein fiber. Although it is not temperature-regulating like wool, it does stop overheating by keeping you cool. This duvet is a perfect niche for those who are hot sleepers. Silk also naturally conforms around your body when you sleep, giving a nice fitted feel.
Just like this Lightweight Mulberry Silk Duvet that shares a similarity with many other natural duvets: the fact that it is hypoallergenic as well, you need not to worry about your allergies when wrapped up in silk. The allergies aren’t the only things scared of silk, dust mites and fungus also stay far away from this antifungal material!
Out of all the alternatives, silk would have to be the most expensive. Because the process of creating a silk duvet is tedious at best. The price matches that effort. Even though silk is worth the price, it's still a factor when looking for a duvet alternative. Good quality silk has a long lifespan, but the more you wash it, the shorter the lifespan gets. In addition to that, silk is also very delicate, and as such, any staining would be best removed at a dry cleaner; making this one as a high-maintenance choice!
This panda snack is not just food, you can also sleep in it too! Don’t worry the pandas still have more than enough!
Bamboo duvets are soft and comfortable. The fiber spacing makes it insanely breathable, so no excess heat gets trapped in with you, nobody likes excess heat. Hypoallergenic - we’ve thrown that one around quite a lot lately, right? Well, that's the level of quality recommendations we want to give out just like a lot of other natural duvet alternatives, Bamboo is hypoallergenic as well. Just like pandas, bamboo sheets are strong! The fibers run end-to-end, making them very durable with a long lifespan. Along with that lifespan, you can expect bamboo to look new for a very long time! The non-absorbent qualities of bamboo will not absorb oils from your skin, ensuring no yellowing.
Bamboo is also expensive, with pandas being endangered you would think that bamboo would be readily available and cheap to boot, but alas that is not the case. Although, just like silk, you are paying for quality. When storing bamboo duvets, one thing to watch out for is wrinkling. Since the fibers are so long, they are more prone to being wrinkled so watch out for that!
Microfiber, also known as Polyester—is the only duvet alternative we are listing that does not come from nature. But synthetic does not always mean bad! This duvet alternative is usually made from a synthetic blend of polyester, nylon, and sometimes even wood pulp!
As mentioned, the bamboo’s long fibers make it prone to wrinkling, but these synthetic fibers are shorter in nature, so wrinkling won’t be a problem! This duvet alternative is also low maintenance, and machine wash. You got it! Synthetic, plastic, these words are often associated with lightweight, which this alternative is, as light as feathers (minus the feathers of course!). You will be able to breathe easily knowing that this product is animal free since everything is synthetic.
Now, the microfiber duvet alternative is not without its faults, firstly synthetic fibers are highly absorbent (think of sponge) which can make it stain, and smell easily (luckily you can chuck them into the machine).
Now, this one might be a shocker, but this duvet alternative has a high chance of generating static, ouch. Again, this product is not found in nature as such the quality is highly dependent on the materials and care used by the manufacturer, do your research and buy with care.
One 2017 study found that during sleep, the body is sensitive to variations in ambient temperature. An individual's sleep quality may suffer if their room is moderately hot or cold. There are benefits and disadvantages out of these alternatives. To help you choose, here's a quick run down of these pros and downsides.
Now, which alternative duvet is best for you? Well, don’t let anybody tell you what to do, the answer depends on what you need. Don’t mind forking out extra cash for luxury? Go with the silk duvet. Want something with a little more heft and temperature regulation? Wool is for you. Your animal-free choices are Bamboo and Microfiber, with the Bamboo being the more quality option whilst Microfibers are your budget-friendly synthetic option. Regardless of whichever you choose, you can sleep underneath your duvet in comfort knowing that you made the best decision you could with the information you obtained from Down Under Bedding.

Would you believe me if I told you that your bedding choice affects the quality of your sleep, which is why you should switch to wool bedding if you find it a suitable choice for you! Let’s go through the various benefits that wool bedding has to offer.
Are you planning on purchasing wool-filled bedding and want to know more, you have come to the right place!
Did you know? Wool is also known as “miracle fiber” (as quoted by dormio organic beds) because of its amazing capabilities. Along with keeping you warm during winters, this fiber also has many other incredible qualities such as being hypoallergenic, flame resistant, temperature regulating, and many more.
Do you like wool bedding for your room? Or do you just prefer it as a winter clothing option? Regardless of why you choose Wool, there are many reasons to love it even more! Wool bedding choice has many more benefits than down, feather, and other synthetic blends do not offer.
Wool bedding helps regulate your body’s temperature by absorbing moisture from your body and desorbing it from your bedding. This makes it a perfect choice for all seasons! Wool bedding can keep you warm during winter and cool during summer since it has incredible temperature-regulating properties.
Wool is known to be an effective fiber that absorbs moisture as compared to down and feather-filled products. Are you someone who suffers from night sweats like me? If you answered yes, then this is a go-to option for you!
Its unique temperature-regulating properties make it an ideal choice for cold and hot sleepers, as with wool bedding, you are less likely to wake up in the middle of the night. What are you waiting for, take a look at the amazing wool bedding options here!
Yes, Wool is known to be super warm, yet also breathable! But did you know that it can also keep you cool during the summer??
I bet you didn’t know this! Ha, a new fact you learned today!
Yes, wool has incredible temperature regulating quality, making it ideal for summer and winter. Wool is naturally capable of wicking away moisture from your body and keeping you cool and comfortable throughout the night! As well as, it can help keep you warm by trapping hot air and moisture when needed. Wool's unique ability to help wick away the moisture vapor released by our bodies, to help get us a comfortable sleep.
This capability keeps you dry and warm for better sleep quality while eliminating dampness in your wool bedding.
If you share your duvet with your partner and one of your feels hot, yet the other is always cold, then wool bedding is a good option. As it adapts to your body’s temperature to ensure you can get a comfortable sleep throughout the night.
As we mentioned, wool has natural temperature-regulating abilities, which make it especially helpful for those who experience night sweats or hot flashes.
Tip: It is most effective when the entire bed is made of natural, breathable fibers.
Wool has balanced thermal insulation properties which means that during winter wool easily warms without any overheating issues. In spring and summer, it helps keep you cool by wicking away moisture from your skin. This capability makes wool the ideal material for bedding, as it helps your body to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night, regardless of the season.
Wool is the best natural choice for the future as it is renewable, sustainable, and biodegradable. As you are aware, wool comes from the fur of sheep that requires air, water, sunlight, and grass which is all renewable. Once the wool is disposed of, it can easily decompose, which makes it an environmentally friendly choice. Merino wool is one of the top choices of organic wool you may find out there. Wool mark prides itself for merino wool to be a naturally sourced fiber grown by Australian sheep.
Our Down Under Australian Wool Duvet is crafted with a lot of love and is 100% natural.
Sleeping under a wool duvet reduces discomfort and movement, which in turn leads to a reduced heart rate, giving you and your loved ones a deeper and calmer sleep.
Wool fibers are known to have a protective lanolin coating; which gives them flame-resistant qualities. You do not need any excess chemicals in wool to get this quality, as it is natural for wool to be flame-retardant!
Yes…. Wool comes with self-extinguishing qualities and low flame spread. Another great feature about wool is that it never melts, so it does not stick to the skin, unlike many synthetic fabrics. Wool fiber is also used for many military uniforms, aircraft, and even to make uniforms for firemen! Also, most outdoor (camping) gear has some form of wool in it.
Wool bedding is thoroughly washed several times to remove lanolin and eliminate the risk of bad odors. Organic wool prides itself on being naturally odorless and chemical-free.
Do you count country sheep while sleeping….1….2…3….Zzz, Gone off to sleep!
Naturally, you would want to sleep in an environment that is best for you, which is why wool bedding offers a natural and healthy sleep environment.
Wool being naturally hypoallergenic is an ideal material for those suffering from skin sensitivities/ irritations and allergies. Wool is naturally resistant to mold and mildew. It quickly absorbs and releases moisture, and thus doesn’t allow the damp conditions that molds and mildew thrive on. Other fibers, such as down, don’t readily release moisture and are therefore more susceptible to collecting allergens.
This hypoallergenic quality of wool makes it a perfect addition for babies as well as adults suffering from allergies. You might find that some people experience irritation to wool fibers when they wear a wool sweater, but wool bedding is different. Wool fibers for your bedding choice are much softer, and higher quality, also a cotton layer protects wool fibers from coming in direct contact with your skin.
Our Down Under Bedding's premium wool duvet is made of 100% Natural finest quality wool. The wool duvet inside a 100% Cotton cover halts the spread of dust mites, bacteria, and other allergens to banish nighttime coughs and sniffles. It also maintains an even body temperature, inviting deeper, healthier rest.
As we mentioned, wool has a natural ability to absorb moisture. Not only does this help regulate your body’s temperature and humidity, but also relieves your body of thermal stress to ensure a deep, comfortable sleep throughout the night. Choosing a duvet cover made of breathable 100% Cotton could help maintain an even body temperature and help you get a good night’s sleep.
Wool bedding can last longer if cared for properly. Just like any other bedding accessory, we recommend you check the manufacturer's label for wash and care instructions.
The best way to keep your duvet comforter clean for longer is to add a duvet cover to it. This added layer of protection to your wool blanket would help you keep it clean and fresh for longer, and you can simply toss the duvet cover in the washer.
If you need a deeper clean for your duvet, then check the label and follow the wash and care instructions. Most wool duvets are machine washable, but if they are not, then we recommend you wash them in a commercial size laundromat only! Since this bedding soaks a lot of water.
Checkout out our blog on How To Wash Wool Filled Bedding.
Yes, wool is a natural fiber in itself, but it does undergo a lot of cleaning and chemical processes. You might also find that some wool bedding has a mix of both natural and synthetic fibers. Always check the composition of your product before making a purchase!
As you may know by now, Wool undergoes a lot of treatments to become machine washable. This is not a bad thing! Wool needs to be carefully treated and cleaned to remove odor and dust. Mostly all wool is washed twice to thrice to achieve the best results!
This is the most important thing you can do to protect your wool bedding. Not only does it protect your bedding from dust mites, germs, and spills, but also makes it last longer.
When purchasing a good quality cover for your duvet, you should consider one with natural fibers such as cotton; this helps maximize the performance of your wool filling. You may also want to consider one with a higher thread count and good stitching material.
Down Under Bedding mattress topper is fully machine washable. We recommend you always use a front load washing machine for the best results. And use a delicate/ gentle cycle for washing with cold water.
To keep your mattress pad fresh and clean for longer, we recommend you regularly flip the topper on the bed. If it does not need deep cleaning, we advise you to let it out in the sun for a while so that the wool’s natural antibacterial properties can act. You could also simply spot clean the minor areas of your mattress topper, the topper that requires attention.

When looking for a new silk duvet you might wonder which one you want. Either way, you cannot go wrong since they are all silk duvets right? Well, we have carefully curated and narrowed down some choices for you, so you don’t have to! Just sit back and read on, to know which luxurious duvet will be added to your bedroom collection.
A duvet is shaped as a sort of a large bag sewn from cloth, and they can then be filled with a myriad of materials.
Duvets are typically white, and they are almost always plain, this is to retain the integrity of the Duvet cover which is there for the aesthetic, but never judge a book by its cover, it's what's inside that matters! Be it wool, down, feather or even silk all of them make for a good duvet.
Many articles and people would be quick to use duvets and comforters interchangeably, but these two articles of bedding are far from being the same. Duvet is derived from a French word for down. Do I have your attention yet? I mean what language is sexier than French, the language of love non? Comforters on the other hand, are used synonymously and more commonly in the United States. They also refer to common blankets as well. But a duvet always subtly and sweetly cries out: class.
Ah, Silk is so smooth, luxurious, and soft to the touch. Silk is harvested from the cocoons of silkworms. They are a hypoallergenic protein fiber. Although it is not temperature-regulating like wool, it does stop overheating by keeping you cool. This duvet is a perfect niche for those who are hot sleepers. Silk also naturally conforms around your body when you sleep, giving a nice fitted feel.
A silk-filled comforter is naturally thermoregulating. Helps keep you cool during summer and warm in winter. However, mulberry silk is even more breathable than cotton. It can wick moisture away twice as fast and reduce the humidity in your bed by 50%. You’ll stay comfortable and dry all night long with silk bedding.
Check out this Washable Oversized Silk Duvet that is combined with a 220 thread count mercerized cottonshell resulting in a magnificently soft premium silk product that won’t mat or wrinkle.
Mulberry silk bedding is surprisingly breathable and efficiently wicks your sweat away when you become too hot. As the extra water is wicked away, your body cools down because it can feel the sweat evaporating off your skin. Additionally, there isn’t any extra water or humidity in your bed to worsen extreme temperatures. As a result, your body is able to regulate its temperature naturally and you never overheat when you sleep under a mulberry silk comforter.
Silk duvets are incredibly lightweight and flexible. Which makes it ideal to be used for duvet and pillow fills.
Try out our Lightweight Mulberry Silk Duvet that is filled with 100% natural long strand mulberry silk and features an outer shell made of 300 thread count 100% pure cotton, which is very soft and durable. The shell and the silk filling make the comforter extremely breathable and lightweight, allowing for a cooler and more comfortable sleep.
Dust mites, bacteria and mold avoid materials that do not hold moisture, so you can rest comfortably knowing you are not sleeping with unwelcome guests. so that you can sleep well with your favorite duvet.
Check out our Deluxe 100% Mulberry Silk Filled Duvet that is Mold and Dust Mite Resistant.
Mulberry Silk products are produced naturally and thus there is none to very little involvement of chemicals. Since the silk threads are also very soft, treating them with chemicals is not a good idea. So, you don’t have to worry about dangerous chemicals entering your body while you sleep.
Mulberry Silk is known to have the strongest natural fiber in the world, which makes it incredibly durable. The silk fiber is compared to being stronger than steel if compared to; the same diameter.
Out of all of the alternatives Silk would have to be the most expensive. Because the process of creating a silk duvet is tedious at best, the price matches that effort. Even though silk is worth the price, the price is still a factor when looking for a duvet alternative. Good quality silk has a long lifespan, but the more you wash it the shorter the lifespan it gets. In addition to that Silk is also very delicate and as such any staining would be best removed at a dry cleaner; making this one high-maintenance choice! Don’t let that turn you off though, cause deep down inside you know you are high maintenance yourself *wink*
Do you and your partner both enjoy the trappings of a silk duvet but are constantly fighting over it like wrapped in a cat and dog fight to who ever gets the most out of it? Down Under Bedding provides the solution in the form of the Oversized Silk Duvet.
This is a premium duvet that is made of long-strand silk. It is surrounded with a 220-thread count mercerized cotton cover to keep it safe and clean. This duvet is not only oversized but heavyweight too! Well, not as heavy as our weighted blankets but heavy enough to satisfy the feeling of weight.
Combining the luxury of silk with a heavier feel; this duvet helps you choose, NOT choose between the two! Also, the cherry on top, (don’t worry if you actually eat cherries and stain your silk duvet) this duvet is washable, for easy cleaning!Heavyweight silk duvet, like this Deluxe 100% Mulberry Silk Filled Duvet is three (3) times heavier than the lightweight silk duvet and twice as heavy as the oversized silk duvet. Again this bad boy doesn’t come nearly as heavy as our weighted blankets but it will do the trick! You can have the feeling of a warm hug from a loved one just like a weighted blanket does. But no feeling of being too pinned down. Weighted blankets are not for everybody but, if you still need that weighted pressure when you sleep, this heavyweight silk blanket is the one for you. It also comes with a 300-thread count pure cotton cover which is soft to the touch and breathable.
Nothing beats a lightweight mulberry silk duvet when it comes to sleeping in comfort. This luxurious duvet is filled with 100% pure mulberry silk, making it incredibly soft, light, and breathable. It offers superior insulation and temperature regulation, keeping you comfortable all night long. Its hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial properties help to reduce the risk of allergies and skin irritation, making it perfect for those with sensitive skin. Its lightweight design makes it ideal for any season, providing the perfect balance of warmth and comfort. The mulberry silk duvet is also incredibly durable, helping you get a good night's sleep for years to come.
Check out our Lightweight Mulberry Silk Duvet with Storage Bag that has 4 corner ties and another 4 ties in between instead of the conventional 4 sided ties. A great way to stop your duvets from moving inside!
If you are in the market for a silk duvet, and have read through these three amazing options and cannot make up your mind; there are some things you should consider.
All-season silk is great, especially when it is wrapped in a 100% cotton cover. but silk really does specialize in keeping you cool! With that being said we highly recommend the lightweight mulberry silk duvet wholeheartedly! In the cold winter months, you can store it in its eco-friendly 100% pure cotton bag and opt for something warmer like wool. All in all a silk duvet is an amazing choice for a luxurious feel, that drapes around your curves and makes you feel like royalty. No matter which one your heart goes with - you cannot go wrong.

]]>Ever wondered what makes your down pillow or comforter good? Is it fill power, loft, weight, insulation, or all of it?
Fill Power is the measurement of loft or fluff. The higher fill power means your comforter or pillow will retain its firmness longer, provide greater insulation and generate an altogether lighter and fluffier experience. The type of filling directly affects your duvet’s warmth, weight, price, and feel. Moreover, choosing the right insulation material could help you get a comfortable sleep.
Hence, fill power can help you to understand what makes certain down products like Goose and Duck down duvets are premium sleep accessories.
According to our in house sleep expert and CEO here in Down Under Bedding, Tony Sagar
"The larger the clusters of Down, the better will be the insulating power be of your Down product."
Down Under Bedding, President Tony Sagar provides a simple explanation right here. Surely after reading this blog, you will become an expert at buying good quality Down-filled products and bedding accessories!
Fill power for down fill = Thread count for cotton sheets
It indicates the quality of your down product and you would often see this term in relation to down-filled products like duvets, comforters, jackets, and pillows.
Fill power is directly related to the size and proportions of down clusters in your duvet, which tends to be higher for goose down when compared with duck down. To find out more about their difference, we've made a separate blog for this: Goose Down Vs. Duck Down Bedding: Which Is Better For You?
So, when you think of down fill the first thing that pops into your mind is Goose Down. Right?
Yes, you got it right! Down does come from Geese. It is the light, airy and fluffy coating found under the visible feathers of these birds. It is also a rare find and hence, expensive which is why these down-filled products are on the higher side of the price range. Read our blog about why Goose Down is The Best Fill for You to know the reason behind this.
Fill power comes from several lab tests that measure the cubic inches of loft per ounce that down fill produces. If a product has a fill power of 500, it means that one ounce of down feathers takes up 500 cubic inches (ca. 8 l). The more the down is per cubic inch, the more air is trapped. This helps make your down-filled accessory warmer as the air pockets trap the heat and slow down the rate of heat loss from your body, keeping you warmer and cozier for longer.
Loft helps measure the fluffiness of your down-filled product. It can be defined as the number of cubic inches filled by an ounce of down. The loft of down is one of the most important factors determining your down merchandise price.
Fill power represents the down product’s size and quality. It directly impacts how much loft (fluffiness) a pillow carries and the loft in turn determines how long the pillow will retain firmness.
The higher your down product's fill power or loft, the better its quality, and the better the quality of your down, the greater its insulating properties.
Result - a warm, cozy, and long-lasting down pillow or duvet. The down loft can range from 300 to 900 cubic inches (14.75 l) per ounce.
It is one of the most important factors in determining the price of the down product, which is usually perceived as expensive. However, down products usually have good endurance and can probably last forever if properly managed. Thus, making them an investment.
Wondering what all those numbers in your duvet or comforter’s description mean?
Well, they signify the quality of insulation and tell you how warm your quilt will keep you.
Try this. Sit on a down cushion or slide under a down comforter. You'll notice a difference right away. Down filling tends to be softer and will compress as you add weight to it, however, it also regains its normal shape quickly. That's because the clusters possess loft and are naturally designed to maintain their original form.
For instance, check out Down Under Bedding's Hutterite Goose Down Blanket with Corner Ties. It is filled with premium quality white Canadian goose-down fill and boasts 850 lofts. It also provides exceptional insulation while being ultra-lightweight.
Now coming to the product that attracts the most questions. Down Pillows!
You should keep three aspects in mind while choosing your down pillow.
It is true that the finer and more luxurious option goose-down pillows carry a higher price point since the materials used to create them are not as readily available or easy to find. But, these are the top reasons you should consider switching to down bedding and invest in better sleep:
The “fill power” of a down pillow refers to the size of the down clusters within it. These clusters are lighter, loftier, and more flexible than feathers. They're also warmer.
You might find the number showing fill power on the label of your duvet, comforter, or jacket. The down fill power ranges between 350 and 900 and indicates how many cubic inches a single ounce of down occupies.
Note that only down can have fill power, whereas feathers do not. The video below explains the difference between down and feather.
The maximum fill power you can find is 900, representing the top-quality cushion or pillow you can buy. The higher your fill power, the largest sized clusters inside the item. It will also feature better insulation for a better loft.
You might also find some jackets with fill power 900. Consider this the most premium item out there because 900 fill power is the best that you can get!
To compare, you can examine the furniture and soft toys at your home. These products tend to have a lower fill power (around 500).
Also, note that if you're looking for a fluffier pillow, opt for a higher fill power and luxury materials. While some manufacturers use a down feather blend in their bedding, it's best to stick to premium quality goose down to ensure your best night's sleep.
Normally, any item with a fill power of at least 650 is considered a premium. Down fills under 650 are usually considered to be in the commercial realm.
Disclaimer: Fill Power is unregulated by standard and does not include any feather or synthetic fill products.
Fill Power should only be used for Pure Down Products; however, manufacturers misuse the word and use it to define other things, which could be misleading. You may find that many synthetic and down alternative products refer to the term fill power in their description, which can be very misleading. Fill power should only be used to refer to products with down fill.
Now that you have learned all about fill power, let’s understand what is fill weight and why is it important!
You might have noticed that people often talk about fill power, but hardly anyone mentions fill weight in their product descriptions. Why is that? Fill power helps determines the loft and quality of your down products, whereas fill weight is a measure of the volume of your down accessory.
Fill power --> Quality
Fill weight --> Quantity
Simply put, fill power is the horsepower of your down product insulation, while fill weight is the torque.
Both are equally essential when buying a down-filled product, but as you also may have noticed, many brands do not highlight the fill weight. This can leave you with an unsatisfactory purchase as weight directly impacts your product's insulation.
According to the experts at World Travel:
"This is a very interesting thing that people often overlook. For one thing, many manufacturers won’t even tell you the amount of insulation in their jackets – they’ll usually tell you about fill power, sometimes about down/feather ration, but they often skip this one. That’s because it actually plays a really big role in keeping you warm.
Maybe you’ll see a jacket that’s insulated with 700 fill power down for $50. And that is too good to be true – what the manufacturer isn’t telling you is that there’s probably very little insulation in that jacket. Meaning that it is not completely insulated and it has cold spots, and you won’t actually be warm in it."
The higher the fill power in your down product, the better the quality and the more compressible it will be. Fill weight helps regulate the softness and firmness of your products.
For example – it is easier to store your down-filled duvet comforter in a small condo during summer than a duvet filled with a synthetic or wool blend. The amazing compressibility of down makes its storage easy and accessible in small spaces without damaging your product.
Furthermore, down-fill weight is also fundamental in establishing the warmth of your product. When a product has a lower down fill, it could mean cheaper quality. It would not provide you as much warmth as down-filled bedding with higher fill power.
Similar to Thread Count … The Higher the number means, the better Loft and comfort. Down Under Bedding carries 500 Fill Power to 900 Fill Power. All Down Under Bedding Down Duvets are Made in Canada for premium Quality. So, when searching for a product with more warmth, you should consider checking out fill power as well as fill weight.
Take Note: The higher the number of fill power the better the loft and quality of your down product. A product with loft 850 will be better than one with loft 500.
Fill power signifies the warmth and quality of your down pillow. Loft helps determine the firmness of your down pillow.
You might have heard the term 'pancake pillow'. Down pillows are referred to as pancake pillows because they tend to become flat as a pancake in the morning.
Your down-filled pillow becomes flat in the morning from the weight of your head but can be easily adjusted by fluffing it. The best time to do this is in the morning while making your bed!!
As the loft inside your pillow is responsible for firmness, fill power should not be considered a measuring factor. In fact, the firmness which illustrates your pillow to be soft, medium, or firm is determined by the fill weight. This can also be adjusted by the amount of down fill inside the pillow's shell.
Still figuring out which one to buy? Check out these 5-star rated down pillows. This is the perfect pillow for both side and stomach sleepers. It is considered super-soft and helps provide support. This pillow has a 550 loft provided by the white down; it's so generously stuffed. It also comes with a 100% down-proof cotton cover to enhance the feel of this super soft and comfy down pillow.
Who wouldn't want to sleep on a cloud-like pillow!! I am already dreaming!!
Myths | Facts |
The higher the fill power, the firmer the pillow. |
Not true. The higher the fill power of down, the softer your pillow will be.
|
The higher the fill power, the heavier the pillow. |
Down is known to be super light and fluffy. It is the lightest material even when compared to feather pillows.
|
The Bottom Line is, the better the quality, the higher the price will be. If you are looking for an ultra-lightweight and highly compressible duvet, jacket, or another item, it is better to go with more fill power. But if you want to consider something more affordable and the weight and bulkiness are not an important factor, then you could go with one that has less fill weight, say about 500.
Many people ask similar questions like ‘What am I supposed to do with a duvet cover?’, ‘Can you use a duvet cover by itself?’, ‘Do I really need one?’ Well, all the answers remain entirely up to you. It’s really your choice. You get to decide whether you need one or not, but let me attempt to convince you why you should definitely be using one!!
Did You know?? Covering your Down Comforter with a Duvet Cover offers protection from body oil, make-up, and any other items that could make contact.- Verolinens
Who wouldn’t want to wake up to a lovely Sunday breakfast in bed?? Count me in……but soon you realize the hassle of cleaning your sheets. Ugh!! Do not fear when you have a duvet cover near!!
A duvet cover can protect your expensive comforter from regular washes. Did you know… that covering your down comforter with a duvet cover offers protection from body oil, make-up, and any other items that could contact it? Duvet covers act as the outer layer of protection for your duvet or comforter just like pillowcases do for your pillows, sometimes they are even referred to as giant pillowcases. Yass! I love this name for duvet covers, it makes me chuckle.
Check out some of Down Under Bedding's Duvet Covers that you will surely love.
Any type of duvet or comforter can be used as an insert for the duvet cover of your choice. That’s right, you read correctly!! Even though the name can lead you to believe that they are only meant for duvets, ‘duvet’ is actually the French word for ‘comforter’ so technically they can also be called comforter covers.
This giant pillowcase, a.k.a. duvet cover, generally comes with a zipper or button closure to ensure your duvet stays securely inside the cover. Many Duvets Cover also come with insert ties to assist with keeping your duvet in its place. Read more about this in a few scrolls!
Both duvets and comforters are filled with warm, insulating materials that provide you with superb comfort through the night. It keeps you warmer than just a plain blanket does, as the insulation actually holds the heat in much better, encapsulating the warmth within.
What’s great about duvets is they can be tailored to suit what kind of sleeper you are, by just switching the insulation material inside. Duvet covers can assist with this insulation process, helping to entrap that heat around you, or giving it a cooling effect when the sheets are thinner and allowing the heat to more easily escape. They do all this while also providing the soft feel of the fabric you enjoy.
What’s better than cuddling up on a cold winter day under my warm duvet, with a really nice fuzzy fleece duvet cover on it? Ahh! Such bliss.
Duvet comforters can be an expensive investment and in the incident that you happen to get them dirty, you may have to have them cleaned professionally, which means spending more money! No, thank you!
Have no fear, your duvet cover is here! We all know it’s difficult to wash a thick, bulky comforter or a duvet insert. If you are planning to wash it, please remember to always check the care label for wash instructions. I hate to sound like a broken record, but this reminder is important, otherwise, you will end up with regrets about washing your expensive blanket.
It doesn't matter what your duvet or comforter’s outer fabric is made from, they all can get dirty easily. The great news about a duvet cover is you don’t have to wash your comforter as often, which to me is a blessing. Nobody likes laundry day, especially when it comes to washing your comforter — the struggle is real! For those duvets that can’t be washed, duvet covers are even more necessary! It really helps to keep that duvet looking like new. Another massive bonus is that a duvet cover is just as easy to wash as a flat sheet. You just slip it off and pop it right in the washer.
Another giant bonus about duvet covers is that they are so easy to store! They don’t take up much room when they are folded up — just about the same amount of space as a mattress sheet or a flat sheet. This makes it so easy to own many styles of duvet covers to mix and match whenever you feel like switching it up.
I bet you never realized this!!
Omg, this has been in front of you the whole time, but it never would have occurred that this great piece of fabric could have such wonderful multipurpose uses.
Yess!! You heard it right! Duvet covers also make a great alternative on those very hot summer nights.
Are you that person that can never seem to cool down?? So am I! It’s so uncomfortable when you’re trying to sleep at night! What I like to do is use my duvet cover as an actual flat sheet to cover myself and just leave my warm comforter or duvet out of it. No insert is needed. It works like a charm! No more waking up in the middle of the night from being too hot. I don’t miss those nights!
Give your duvet or comforter a rest. Use the duvet cover without the insert by laying it on your bed just as you would a flat sheet and use it to cover yourself. This can also really help to extend the life of your duvet when it’s not being used as often. The duvet cover acts as the perfect multipurpose substitute.
Some may argue that they aren’t the biggest fans of getting the duvet or comforter out of the duvet cover, which can be a difficult task sometimes for sure, I agree. Though I find it a worth-it trade with the guarantee that my duvet remains covered, and that covering remains in place all night, even with all of my tossing and turning.
To me, it’s easier to pull out the comforter from a duvet cover than trying to put a mattress sheet back on the mattress. Oh, those mattress sheets! Furthermore, remaking your bed in the morning after sleeping becomes so much easier when you have a duvet cover instead of a flat sheet AND a comforter to work with.
When you are using a duvet cover, a flat sheet takes a back seat. A flat sheet can be a real pain sometimes when it doesn’t stay in place. Yes, definitely, a flat sheet helps with added comfort with a fabric you really enjoy, but I promise you, a duvet cover can do the same thing.
Whenever I sleep with a flat sheet, I wake up to it bunched up in some corner of the bed, never where it started when I first laid down. I guess that is the curse of someone who tosses and turns in their sleep. Sounding quite familiar?
When I decided to first try a duvet cover, it entirely changed everything! The duvet cover encloses the entire comforter, instead of just one side of it, as a flat sheet does. So basically, it acts like a flat sheet but essentially stays in place!
There are so many fabrics and styles of duvet covers to choose from, which makes giving your bedroom a fresh new look super easy. Board of your room? You can just change your duvet cover. Ta-da! It’s as easy as that!!
All types of designs can be found on duvet covers and can appeal to any sort of taste. Whatever look you are going for, a duvet cover can really help achieve it. A flat crisp sheet can provide an elegant hotel look, or may you’re more into the textured, heavy, and luxurious fabric. Whatever your style, a duvet cover can help you achieve your vision. They really can give a different vibe to a room. No need to be bored with your bedroom any longer!
I greatly enjoy giving my room a whole new, fresh feel just by changing my duvet cover. I have all kinds of styles to give me more options and to be able to mix it up often. People may ask, ‘Why not just use a decorated comforter to redecorate?’ Well, that is an option, but certainly the more expensive one. Duvet covers do not cost as much as a full new comforter set and are way easier to wash than an entire comforter or duvet.
Take a look at our great collection of duvet covers!
So, you’re probably wondering what’s the catch. Duvet covers can’t be that perfect! They do have a downside, and that is the fact that the comforter can still shift around inside the duvet cover. But wait! There is a solution to this too! Meet the duvet cover that comes with corner ties!
You may have noticed even before this article that your duvet cover at home has these random strings inside it, but you never actually knew what they were for. Well, now you know! They are used to attaching onto the corners of your duvet to ensure that it is held in place and does not shift or bunch up inside the cover.
So, how do you use these corner ties… Well, first you flip your duvet cover inside out. Take the two corners of your comforter that you want to be positioned on the opposite side of the actual opening of the duvet cover. Tie each corner with the ties tightly. Begin flipping the duvet cover right side up while sliding it down onto the comforter.
Secure the buttons or zipper to close the opening, and voilà! Just one simple extra step and you know your comforter won’t be shifting and bunching inside your favorite duvet cover. Take a look at our video below.
If you own a duvet cover that does not have this option, then you can either install them by doing a little D-I-Y project or you could simply choose among Down Under's duvet cover with ties products best fits you.
The bottom line is, regardless of how you like to use your duvet cover, you have tons of options. I think one of the last and most important features that a duvet cover truly brings is a much-improved comfort level. They are available in a range of different materials, so you can choose whatever fabric you like best.
Need something cooler? Go for more breathable materials like bamboo or cotton covers. They are perfect for the summer months! Or maybe you run cold, and you enjoy the toasty feeling of a heavier warmer fabric, especially on those cold winter days. Flannel, fleece, or any other thick material can be perfect for you. These heavier fabrics will only help to keep you consistently warm throughout the entire night, even if the temperature drops.
Maybe you aren’t the biggest fan of the way your comforter or duvet feels on your skin. Perhaps the fabric is rough and itchy or produces a lot of static. This is another reason why utilizing a duvet cover is a great idea! You can choose basically any fabric you like instead of being stuck with the fabric that your comforter or duvet is made from. Isn’t that amazing!!! Never sacrifice your comfort ever again.
]]>Gasp! "Is my wool-filled duvet even washable??"
Do not worry! You have come to the right place. We can help guide you through the step-by-step process of washing your wool-filled bedding, be it your wool duvet comforter, bedsheet, or pillow.
Well, the first thing you should check here is if it is actually possible to wash the wool duvet comforter bedding and more on the below.
We know you must be having a lot of questions when it comes to washing a quilt with wool batting. Can you dry clean a wool duvet or should you tumble dry it? What if you have an old duvet and how to clean old wool quilts? Do I need wool-safe detergent? We hope to answer all your questions here. Keep reading!!
Even though wool-filled bedding is easy to care for, you should always make sure to check the manufacturer’s wash and care instructions.
You should always read the label to confirm whether the duvet comforter is washable or not. Most wool comforters are not washable, as wool is not conducive to washing in its natural form.
Washing wool duvet comforters can often make people nervous. As you might have to carefully plan. We get that your duvet is precious to you as it can be a costly investment.
For some, it might be a generational hand me down which you want to preserve. In my case- I love the wool-filled duvet my grandmother gifted me.
And you may want to be cautious as the heat and moisture in the washer could ruin the natural fibers in your warm wool-filled blanket.
But learning how to wash a comforter without ruining it doesn’t have to be rocket science. Wool is naturally breathable, antibacterial, and also temperature regulating which makes it less susceptible to bacteria and dust mites.
Wool has a natural ability to self-clean itself. Wool fibers are well known for their ability to remain dry for longer as they have unique moisture-absorbing properties which make it difficult for dust mites and bacteria to form in one place.
Pro Tip: Always use duvet coves and pillow protectors to keep your wool-filled bedding fresh and clean for longer.
We recommend that you use only a commercial-size washer at the laundromat for your duvet as it would give it more space to move around freely.
Remember that a duvet comforter is heavy and even though it may appear to be dry, it could still be a little damp from the inside. Make sure you let it air dry for longer before putting on a duvet cover.
Wool room suggests that you should never tumble dry your wool duvet comforter, as it could harm the wool fibers inside, instead it is recommended that you naturally dry the duvet.
Heirloom linens have another great idea for drying your duvet, and they propose you put a damp towel for about fifteen minutes in the dryer with your duvet. As always, make sure to check the label for instructions on cleaning for your bedding accommodations.
Before tossing your duvet into the commercial-size washing machine, make sure that it is machine washable.
Now once you’ve made sure of that, let’s start the process of cleaning it:
Squeaky clean wash by hand!!
You could wash your wool-filled bedding items by hand if you feel like exercising your upper body muscles. All you would need is- a bathtub, a big bucket, some soap, and water.
Fill up your bucket or bathtub with cold or lukewarm water and add some detergent to it. Mix it well before adding the bedding accessory. It is best to let it soak for at least 30-40 minutes before rinsing it with fresh water. Rinse it a few times till soapy water stops coming out.
Voilà, it’s done!
Now time for it to dry. As mentioned before- it is always best to let your wool bedding dry naturally.
If you are looking for wool bedding or want to know what type to look for, check out our blog Why Should I Choose Wool For My Bedding
A wool-filled mattress should be cleaned using the spot cleaning method at first. For this, you can use a soft brush to remove and dirt any fluff you see on your wool mattress.
Many websites might also mention that you can clean your mattress with a vacuum, this should be avoided in the case of a wool-filled mattress because it may disturb the filling inside the mattress by making it lose.
In case of a spill on your mattress, make sure to treat the area immediately to prevent staining. You can use dry towels, or a sponge to avoid the liquid from seeping into the mattress.
It is also best to avoid the use of harsh chemicals and detergents while cleaning your mattress.
The best way to keep your duvet comforter clean for longer is to add a duvet cover to it. This added layer of protection to your wool blanket will help you keep it clean and fresh for longer, and you can toss the duvet cover in the washer.
If you need a deeper clean for your duvet, check the label and follow the instructions for the wash and care. Most wool duvets that are washable must be washed in a commercial-size laundromat only, since this bedding soaks a lot of water.
Furthermore, use a delicate cycle for the wash and use cold water. With a small amount of soap. Do not tumble dry your duvet, but if you have to, use a low-heat setting to maintain the ultimate quality of the wool fibers.
After confirming whether your wool pillow is indeed washable or not, recommend you use cold or lukewarm water with a bit of wool detergent. It is best to let them soak in soapy water for a bit. Then turn the machine to the gentle wash cycle and let it spin before rising it with fresh water.
You could line dry your wool pillows, but for faster drying, we recommend you remove the wool fill inside and let it dry separately.
It is recommended that you use a pillow protector at all times for your pillow, but if needed deep cleaning. Since the pillow is in regular contact with your face, we recommend you wash it every 3-4 months. Regularly sleeping on pillows also results in a faster build-up of moisture and germs.
Not every wool pillow is machine washable. Check out our 5-star rated Washable Wool Pillows.
This wool pillow is washable, which means it saves the expenses of dry cleaning. Wash these pillows in a commercial-size laundromat only, as this bedding soaks a lot of water. Delicate cycle wash in cold water, use a small amount of soap, and avoid fabric softener.
Wool mattress pads are usually machine washable, but before you put them in for washing, it is best to check the label for the manufacturer's instructions. We recommend you always use a front load commercial washing machine or a laundromat for best results. And use a delicate/gentle cycle for washing with cold water.
To keep your mattress pad fresh and clean for longer, we recommend you regularly turn the topper on the bed. If it does not need deep cleaning, we advise you to let it out in the sun for a while so that the wool’s natural antibacterial properties can act. You could also simply spot clean the minor areas of your mattress topper, the topper that requires attention.
Another option we would highly recommend is that you use a laundromat that has a commercial-sized washing machine. The commercial-sized machines have sufficient space for your duvet to move around, as compared to a home laundry machine. It is still always advisable to check the label for the manufacturer’s instructions for this, as they may strictly recommend using a professional service.
The next best, most time-efficient, and budget-friendly option is to simply toss your duvet/ comforter in the washing machine at home. But the big question here is that can it be treated like regular laundry?? If you have a full-sized laundry machine, then the answer is Yes, you may wash it at home. Nevertheless, if you do not have a large washing machine, then head to a commercial wash site. They usually have washing machines three times the size of the ones we have at home and can wash a huge blanket easily.
Regardless of how you choose to wash your wool bedding, we just want to remind you to always check the manufacturer’s label for wash and care instructions before washing anything. A little note: washing it yourself would void the manufacturer’s warranty.

]]>According to the experts at healthline:
"Weighted blankets are therapeutic blankets that weigh between 5 and 30 pounds. The pressure from the extra weight mimics a therapeutic technique called deep pressure stimulation or pressure therapy."
Weighted blankets are not a new invention by any stretch although their use was almost exclusively in the medical field. Doctors and therapists were the main purveyors of the product to adult and children patients to help ease psychological disorders. Therapists recommended the use of weighted blankets to patients to solve psychological and behavioral disorders such as anxiety, PTSD, hyperactive behavior in children, etc.
Weighted blankets unlike wool duvets can be made using a material filling of cotton or down. The added weight element in the blanket can come from discs, polyester beads, or small glass pellets. These “weights” shift evenly within the blanket and occupy the sides around the bed creating the pull pressure of the blanket on top of you.
Commonly, buyers of weighted blankets for medical purposes will customize the weight of the blanket to achieve their desired pressure feel. This pressure creates a feeling of being hugged by the user underneath and makes them more relaxed. Weighted blankets thus create a sense of calm, a feeling of being safe, and reduce stress or anxiety for sleepers.
Therapists commonly recommend for adults that are buying for themselves to choose a weighted blanket that is roughly 10% of their ideal body weight. In the case of buying weighted blankets for children, choosing a lighter weight percentile is highly recommended, to avoid possible injury or suffocation for the user.
In stores or online shops, the common range for weighted blankets sold are in increments of 5 lbs and usually goes up to 30 lbs. However, it is also common practice to have buyers make customized weighted blankets that fit their required specifications.
Wool in the wool duvet is made from the hair or fur of a variety of different types of animals, which can include sheep, goats, alpacas, llamas, camels, and rabbits. It is generally at a more affordable price point. The hair from these animals can be made into yarn or spun, which is then weaved into a material that can be used for many different items like wool bedding.
Most wool bedding in the USA and Canada is made from sheep's wool. As compared to other products out there, wool is naturally flame resistant which gives it another upper hand on the fabric market. Since wool has a natural ability to absorb moisture, it helps to regulate your body’s temperature and humidity, also relieving your body of thermal stress and ensuring a deep comfortable sleep throughout the night just like the Natural Home Australian Wool Duvet from Down Under Bedding.
If you’re looking for an all-season bedding, wool duvet is your best choice for year-round comfort. Wool is also better for the environment because it is both biodegradable and renewable. Wool is generally very durable, even more so than cotton, and will last for a very long period. The wool fabric serves as a natural insulator to keep you warm in the winter period and also keeps you cool in the summertime due to its breathability. This means you don’t need to buy separate duvets in the summer and winter, reducing your overall bedding costs!
The answer really depends on you! Are you looking for something all season? Something comfortable to sleep in with a partner? Or maybe something that doesn't irritate your allergies? If you answered yes, yes, yes (or even just one yes) then a wool duvet looks good for you. On the other hand, if you have trouble sleeping, want to help with your stress/anxiety, or want to relieve some body pain the weighted blanket is calling your name. Whatever you choose make sure to take some notes on what you read today to make the best choice for YOU!
Although the weighted blanket is amazing as well, for sleeping with a partner we would have to recommend the wool duvet. As we mentioned, wool is temperature regulating; but in addition to that it also creates individual climate zones for you and your partner. If one person is hot and the other is cold wool will adapt to each person individually all underneath the same covers!
Since weighted blankets have only gone mainstream in recent years there is still not a definitive brand choice for consumers on the market, and the varying specifications of weighted blankets such as weight material, fabric cover, etc. needed for each user make it harder to settle on one specific brand.
However, there are a few types of weighted blankets that have quickly become favorites amongst the ever-growing fan base of weight blankets. An example of this is the Iced 2.0 blanket from Hush, a fast-growing brand that has hugely impacted the transition of the weighted blanket into a mainstream household necessity.
Hush used a 100% bamboo fabric for this weighted blanket that possesses all the temperature regulating and anti-allergen properties that most people look for in bedding products. All of this added to the therapeutic effects of the weight filling in the blanket and it is easy to see why the Hush weighted blanket is quickly growing in popularity.
Despite initial assumptions people may have wool, wool duvets can provide optimal temperature in the summertime and winter months. Wool regulates temperature to make sure it is always at a comfortable level.

]]>The size of your bedding can make all the difference when it comes to getting a good night's sleep. If you have a queen-sized bed, you'll want to make sure you buy the right-sized duvet bedding to get the most out of your sleep.
Did you know more than 50 percent of people in North America use a Queen-sized bed for sleeping purposes? Yes, that’s how popular this size is, and getting the perfect pair for this bedding is necessary to reaching that good night's sleep.
The queen-size bed has grown in popularity over the years for a variety of reasons. The most obvious benefit of the queen size bed is its size. As the name suggests, the queen-size bed is larger than a full-size bed, measuring at 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.
This size is perfect for couples who wish to have more space to sleep comfortably, as well as for individuals who need more room to stretch out. Another advantage of the queen-size bed is its affordability. Compared to other larger sizes like king and California king, the queen-size bed is relatively inexpensive. A
dditionally, the queen-size bed is a great option for smaller bedrooms, as it does not take up much space. Finally, with its large selection of styles and materials, the queen-size bed can fit almost any decor and budget. With so many benefits, it is no wonder why the queen-size bed is so popular.
You can find this in every type, price range, color, and design. Before I forget…..it is easy to transport and shift than your kind size mattress. It also strikes a middle ground in terms of economic options. But don’t take our word for it…..it is best that you do your own research to decide the best option for you.
When it comes to mattresses, size matters. Standard sizes are typically too small for couples and larger people, while small sizes often don’t provide enough space for restless sleepers. A queen-size mattress is the perfect compromise between space and comfort. With enough room for two people to sleep comfortably, it is also the perfect size for solo sleepers who want extra room to sprawl out.
Queen-size mattresses measure approximately 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, making them the ideal choice for most bedrooms. They offer enough room to sleep without taking up too much space in the room. Many leading mattress brands offer a variety of queen-size mattresses to fit any budget and comfort preference. Whether you’re seeking a plush pillow-top mattress or a firmer innerspring mattress, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from.
The benefits of a queen-size mattress are clear. It’s the perfect size for couples, solo sleepers, and even for those with pets who need a little extra room. And, with a variety of different sizes available, you’re sure to find the perfect mattress for your needs.
Queen pillows are slightly longer than a standard pillow, which provides you with more surface area and comfort for your head. The standard measurements for this in North America are (51 x 76 cm) or 20" x 30" (inches). These pillows are perfect for all kinds of sleepers, side, back, or stomach. Their amazing ultra-soft and fluffy fill provide ultimate comfort throughout the night.
The extra room helps provide more comfort for people who like to toss and turn throughout the night. They are specifically designed to be the perfect fit for a queen-sized bed if two of them are placed side by side but work well for twin or king-sized beds too.
Tip: With them being super popular, you can find a wide variety of pillowcases, covers, and inside fill loft, for this sized pillow.
However, pillows should be bought, keeping in mind your personal preference. Many people prefer the extra length of a queen-sized pillow for their twin or double beds.
Did I mention, they fit perfectly well within a standard-sized pillowcase too, depending on the amount of fill inside? Don’t take my word for it, try it out, but be sure to measure!!
When selecting your pillowcases, you'd also be choosing a standard/queen size - and the pillowcase will fit just as nicely, just with a bit of a smaller overhang along the edge.
Queen-size and standard-size pillowcases are often used synonymously with one another despite the fact that a queen-size is a full 4 inches longer. These still fit well within a standard-size pillowcase as well, although depending on the loft it may make it feel a bit firmer.
Not all queens sized duvets are the perfect size for a queen-sized/dimension bed. An average queen-sized duvet comforter will be the perfect fit for a double/ full bed as it would allow the duvet to hang on the sides of the bed and give your room a more professional look. Whereas a queen-sized duvet could potentially be a smaller fit for the same reasons.
As for a duvet comforter dimensions, they may vary by the manufacturer and also by the style of the duvet. So, it is best to check the size before making a purchase.
However, the standard size measures about 88” x 90” or 225 cm X 230 cm. Au-lit fine lines and Canadian Down and feather both have these sized listed as approximate for a queen-sized bed. Whereas the Spruce has 86 to 88 inches in width and 96 to 100 inches for the length of your warm comforter on their website. Some manufacturers may also have 90 or more like the length or width for your quilt.
The best thing about duvet covers is that you can just switch covers based on your mood, and the decoration of your room. Depending on your age, interest, style, and color of choice, there are millions of choices available when it comes to duvet covers.
Changing a duvet cover is the simplest and fastest way to enhance the look of your room, but when purchasing a duvet there are some things you should keep in mind.
A well-fitted duvet cover is very important as it might determine if you are able to get a good sleep. This is when you may also want to look at purchasing a duvet cover with insert ties. We have a whole blog on the importance of purchasing a duvet cover with insert ties and we can’t just stress enough how important it is! Check out our How To Prevent Your Duvet From Moving blog to see what we mean.
A queen-sized duvet cover would generally measure somewhere between 90" X 90" inches i.e. 229 cm X 229 cm or some manufacturers might also have sizes ranging from 88/89” in length or width.
When buying a duvet cover make sure it is the right size for your duvet or comforter. It is best to measure the length and width of your quilt before making a purchase, otherwise, you would notice that your duvet keeps shifting inside your blanket, which could be bothersome while sleeping.
Moving on to Sheets!! Oh, sheets!!
I know you must be wondering if all queen-sized sheets will fit all queen beds/mattresses.
Well, even though the label says queen-size bedsheet, it could be a size bigger or small depending on your mattress. But will they fit all queen beds? The best way to find that out would be to measure the size of your mattress before placing an order.
As you may be aware a fitted sheet has a lined elastic band on the edges to fit tightly around your mattress, to help your mattress stay clean for longer. and three dimensions – length, width, and pocket depth (thickness of mattress), for which the sizes may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. In case you find that your fitted sheet keeps drifting away from the mattress, it may be because it is a smaller size.
Most fitted sheets are made to fit a standard queen-sized bed with dimensions ranging from 60” to around 80” and are around 15 inches deep (the thickness of the mattress) or 152 cm x 203 cm x 38 cm.
Flat sheets are simple bed sheets that lay on top of your mattress. It is a very important part of your bedding as they not only help keep your bedding clean but also help in keeping you comfortable. You can find them in a variety of fabrics to help keep you cool during summer and warm during wintertime.
With a flat sheet, you can have more wiggle room for errors on the dimensions as they do not need to be perfectly aligned with the size. But the general dimensions for a queen-sized flat sheet range from 92” x 108” inches or 230 cm x 260 cm.
As for a flat or stand-alone sheet, you don’t have to worry too much about the thickness of your mattress. A bit of simple advice for flat sheets: the bigger the size the better as it stays tucked in! It is important to understand the length and width adjustments when it comes to buying a flat sheet. Keep in mind to align the long side of your sheet to the long side of the bed, many people don’t place their sheets in the correct way and realize that they keep coming off.
You should take into consideration your height and your partner's height (or whoever you would be sharing the bed with) when choosing the right-sized bed/ mattress for your room. Keep in mind the size of your room as well. The amount of space available in your room should be the biggest factor when deciding the size of the queen bed or any other sized bed you would want to purchase.
Your budget also plays a big factor in deciding what is best for you, but it is safe to say queen-sized bedding being super popular can help you find a variety of options at good prices. Do your research and let me remind you again- Measure before you buy.
Now that you know about the various options available in queen-sized bedding, hopefully, you can make an informed decision for your next mattress purchase. You may also want to have look at the various breathable and organic duvets or luxurious silk bed sheets available for your majestic queen bed.
]]>While deciding on your next pillow, duvet, or comforter you might come across a variety of fills. Deciding the best type of fill for you is an important decision.
But then you find that you have a variety of options to pick from and now you cannot decide what’s best for you. Don’t worry, we got your back?
Many people don’t realize that down and feathers are often different but knowing the differences between them would help make an informed decision!
We have made a step by step guide to help you ease the process of deciding the best duvet fill for you! Ta-da!!
Let’s begin!
A few items rival the premium look and feel of a great quality down comforter. Warm, ultra-soft, and decadent, this bedding instantly elevates your space and can help transform the way you sleep.
Even though the feather-filled bedding might seem to mimic some qualities of the down fill, the reality is that the two are markedly different. Today, we're shedding some light on what sets goose down apart and why it should be the go-to pick in your home.
The down of a goose or duck lies right beneath its outer, feather-filled covering. Most of the time, it's taken from the chest area or belly of the bird.
Compared to denser and heavier feathers, down is light and fluffy. It's also devoid of sharp quills.
Instead, every down cluster has a soft, round center called a plumule, and the fibers are not aligned or connected with one another. The clusters are round and sphere-shaped. In this way, it's similar in shape and texture to a fluffy, white dandelion.
Down pillows and bedding materials are filled with tiny clusters of down. Without any sharp quills to contend with, this material is easily malleable.
It also serves as an excellent insulator, offering plenty of warmth without adding excess weight. When used Au lit (french for in bed) with your cotton linens; Down can provide the ultimate comfort.
You might have noticed that the price of Down has soared in the past few years! Yes, it is because this premium fill has become so popular lately!
Down bedding is preferred due to various reasons like:
When you sit on a down cushion or slide under a down comforter, you'll notice a difference right away.
Down filling tends to be softer and will compress as you add weight to it. But it also tends to return to a normal spot. That's because the clusters possess loft and are naturally designed to return to their original shape.
Tip: This is perfect for those who want to store their Canadian Down Feather duvets in small space. I live in a small Condo! Trust me having to store this during winter is so much easier than my old bulky wool duvet.
Considered the finer and more luxurious option, goose-down pillows also carry a higher price point, as the materials used to create them are not as readily available or easy to find. A few of the other top reasons to switch to down bedding and invest in better sleep include:
The "fill power" of a down pillow refers to the size of the down clusters within it. These clusters are lighter, loftier, and more flexible than feathers. They're also warmer.
This calculation is based on the volume that an ounce of down takes up. Note that only down can have fill power and feathers do not.
The maximum fill power you can find is 850, which represents the top-quality cushion or pillow you can buy. The higher your fill power, the largest-sized clusters inside of the item. It will also feature better insulation for a better loft.
On the other hand, furniture and toys tend to have a lower fill power (around 500).
If you're looking for a fluffier pillow, opt for a higher fill power and luxury materials. While there are some manufacturers that will use a down-feather blend in their bedding, it's best to stick to premium quality goose down to ensure your best night's sleep.
Normally, any item with a fill power of at least 650 is considered a premium. Down fills under 650 are usually considered to be in the commercial realm.
Disclaimer: Fill Power is unregulated by standard and does not include any products that are produced from feathers or synthetic fill.
Fill Power should only be used for Pure Down Products; however, manufacturers misused the word and use it to define other things which should not be considered.
As a general rule, goose down pillows and bedding are more resilient to regular wear. This means they will also last longer, making them well worth the initial investment.
Conversely, goose feathers are not as able to stand up to rigorous daily use.
They don't last as long and tend to create a flat sleeping surface. Also, as feathers begin to poke through and escape from your upholstery, the item that contained them becomes a little more deflated each time.
You should feel confident that you're buying pillows, sheets, and other items that are designed to pass the test of time. Check out our Down Feather Chamber Bed Pillow for an example of a luxurious, down-filled bedding that you'll get plenty of use out of.
If you are still confused, have a look at the points below that could help you decide between down and feather options for your duvet comforter fill, and check out our Goose Down Vs. Duck Down Bedding: Which Is Better For You blog to learn more!
The feathers on a goose or duck serve as their protective outer covering. These keep the waterfowl dry. They also help them fly and repel water.
Feathers are easy to recognize due to their long, sharp quill. They are uniform in makeup and densely packed. Hair-like strands radiate outward from the quill, creating a fan shape.
When manufacturers use feathers in their fill, they take this material from the bird's backs and wings. While it can be fine for cushions or decorative pillows, feather filling doesn't fare as well in bedding. After all, your bed linens are used on a daily basis and will experience plenty of wear and tear over the years.
As such, you need a filling that's both durable and soft. Unfortunately, feather quills can begin to break through the ticking of your fabric over time, creating a poking hazard. While a thick pillowcase or cushion protector can help shield you from these unwanted pricks, they aren't impenetrable.
Moreover, feathers tend to flatten over time. When stuffed into a pillow shell, their quills tend to align with one another. In time, this makes the item appear flatter.
The main reason some people might choose feather-fill bedding is that it is more affordable than goose down! But can the awesome features beat our Canada Goose (duvet made in Canada with down products).
When comparing goose down and feathers, there really isn't a contest at all.
Down is infinitely more durable, great-wearing, and warmer than feathers. While it might require an initial investment, it's one that will pay for itself for years down the road.
Are you looking for the best-quality down-filled mattresses, duvets, and pillows? If so, you came to the right spot.
We offer a wide selection of goose-down bedding, designed to provide the ultimate in comfort. Feel free to shop our full online selection and contact us if you have any questions.
It is ultimately up to you to decide what you would like to purchase, but keep in mind to check the fill power and determine the quality of your bedding items before you make a purchase.
Keep in mind some goose down products that are made offshore are not cleaned and sanitized to Canadian standards and thus potentially result in sleeping with more dust mites, allergens & toxins.
Canadian down duvet comforters are considered to be one of the utmost qualities in the market. It is always significant to take note that items of such nature can be misleading when exported from other countries and you also buy from a reputed source.
]]>We understand that everyone sleeps differently and even though the right-sized duvet seems not such a big deal — it is!! Duvet reminds you of something fluffy…doesn’t it!! Yes, it can be understood as a fluffy quilt because it is basically that, a duvet is a quilted fabric designed with two pieces of fabric that are stuffed with warm feather-like materials such as goose down or feathers or some type of synthetic fabric (you can also find hypoallergic and natural materials as stuffing’s for your duvet). The fabric used to sew this is usually white, and that is why you can find a variety of down covers that can help make your room aesthetically awesome!
But not to forget, getting the right-sized duvet can save you a lot of hassle. Check out our Duvet Products collection to explore your options.
Duvets and comforters act as a top layer for your bedding and also help aesthetically enhance the look of your room. Whether you like a more bling look or a simple shade, there is a perfect design for everyone.
As a general rule, you should buy one size bigger duvet quilt than your mattress. This is because you want to let the cover overhang a little bit on the side of the bed — the place where the mattress meets the foundation of your bed. This just helps gives a more elegant look to your room.
Even though there are no standard measurements and restrictions for the duvet comforter sizes for your mattress, you can find a variety of them ranging from Twin, Twin XL, Double, Queen, King, and California King.
Many times you may notice the dimensions and sizes of all duvet comforters vary based on the manufacturer. This is why we recommend that you always measure before buying.
By taking into consideration your bed size, the climate in which you live, and your own sleeping preferences, you can choose the right size duvet to ensure you get a comfortable night's sleep.
Tip: It is advisable that you measure the thickness of your mattress before making a purchase.

Here is a bedding size chart for all North American sizes
While choosing the right pillow for yourself, it is important to ask yourself whether you like to sleep on a large pillow, or if would you prefer a small one with more volume.
You may notice that some pillows offer more comfort than others because of the nature of the filling inside them.
Standard pillows are the most common type of pillows, measuring (51 x 66 cm) or 20" x 26" (inches). Standard size is the perfect compact option for people who like to sleep without much tossing and turning. This size is often bought with twin or double beds because they sit across perfectly a small-sized bed. A standard pillow can be found very commonly because of its fairly acceptable dimensions that fit everyone from growing kids to adults.
Check out our Pillow Collection to explore your options.
Their amazing ultra-soft and fluffy fill provide for ultimate comfort throughout the night.

King pillows have an extra-long measurement of (51 x 92 cm) or 20" x 36" (inches), which can make you feel like a King! Yes, keep two of them side by side and even if you toss and turn at night, you could still sleep comfortably. They are perfect for a standard king-sized bed, not only do they help with the aesthetics of your room but also the perfect length and width for this large king-sized mattress.

A European pillow is also known as a euro pillow or euro sham. It is a square-shaped pillow popular in European countries but has been greatly adopted across the globe. These are most commonly used for décor purposes on beds, sofas, and couches. The traditional measurement for this size is (66 x 66 cm) or 26" x 26" (inches).
Duvets are there to make you feel warm and cozy. Just as pillows are to help you get a comfortable sleep throughout the night.
They should be longer than the size of your bed so that they can cover your whole body when you are sleeping and your bed when you make it.
Ultimately it is your decision to buy what is best for your needs. Always remember to measure and check the sizes for any bedding you might purchase. Make sure to buy a duvet cover also accordingly.

Sleep Well!!
]]>While growing up you might have heard your mother or your grandmother say that this fabric is special because it is made from silk. The same applies to your bedding, duvets, pillowcases, and sheets woven from silk; as they are considered to be a luxurious addition to your lavish bedroom.
“Silk does to the body what diamonds do for the hand” - Oscar de la Renta
The quality of silk for your bedding matters as much as the thread count of cotton for your bedsheets. It is important to know the types of Silk available out there before making an informed decision.
But as you may have noticed, there are so many options for silk out there. So, which is better??
This is one of the most popular types of silk available, as it is used for your clothes, bedding items, and elegant shirts. Charmeuse is a lightweight fabric that is woven with a satin weave. It has a specific type of weaving that separates it from Mulberry Silk fabric but allows for an extra lustrous and shiny look to the front side of the garment, whereas the backside has a dull matte finish. This type of fabric is perfect for dresses, scarves, and gowns.
This is the highest quality, and most sought-after silk available in the market. Mulberry silk is made from the cocoons of the larvae of the Mulberry silkworms reared in captivity. What makes this unique is the way it is produced! It is produced from the silkworms of the Bombyx mori moth. Mostly used Au Lit (french word for in bed) for your linen and things.
The entire production process is carefully monitored. It is also the most expensive type of silk. The silkworms are nourished and taken great care of……basically pampered really well. So they can produce very high-quality silk….even their diet is supervised!
Did I mention….this particular type of silkworm has been bred in captivity for about 5,000 years!!
If you are looking for silky soft duvets or smooth silk pillowcases because you want something that will be gentle, soft, and silky against your face and hair, Mulberry silk should be your go-to choice.
Also known as Shantung, this type of silk is produced from wild silkworms which are not yet bred. This fabric might have a stiff touch to it as it is made with short and coarse fibers, yet it is still light and airy.
This silk is another fabric used for the bedding industry but is not as durable as Charmeuse Silk. It is a lightweight fabric used for sheer garments and scarves. Easily available and is a more budget-friendly option. But it loses its long-lasting capacity with each wash cycle.
Even though there are many types of silk out there, Mulberry Silk is known to be the most luxurious and highest quality of Silk you can purchase.
The feel and touch of a silk fabric should be the topmost important factor when deciding whether it is good quality or not. Apart from being incredibly soft and smooth, it also feels great on your skin. Silk is known for being a great option for those suffering from allergies as the fabric itself resists dust and mold from forming. It is also great for your skin and hair as it helps retain moisture for longer.
Just like Canadian Down and Feather fill products, Silk is also known to be very lightweight. And if you compare it to Wool, it is only about half the weight.
But what is more amazing about silk is that it can be used throughout the year, during the hot summer months as well as during the chilly winter season, silk duvets are also great if you share a duvet with your partner. It has a natural temperature-regulating ability, which helps equalize the temperature to best suit you and your partner's needs.
Silk is also very durable and long-lasting. So, it is totally worth an investment if you want a luxurious night’s sleep!
Down Under Marketplace carries a lot of Silk Derived Products.
Mulberry Silk has always been considered to be the most expensive of all the silks available out there. A lot of which depends on the production process- Silkworms are taken care of really well. But apart from that, it has some amazing benefits and characteristics!
It is the smoothest and strongest fiber of Silk out there. Not to forget, it is also 100% natural, odorless, and hypoallergenic. Which makes it a great option for all the allergy sufferers out there. You might not believe this, but the Mulberry Silk Duvet is actually the perfect option for all seasons!
Just like your silk pillowcases and sheets do not need to be switched out from summer to winter, a duvet should not have to either. Yayy….means less packing up after every season!
However, if you do get particularly hot or cold nights with your Mulberry Silk Duvet then we do recommend you purchase a different silk duvet for summer and winter.
Always compare the fill options for your duvet when buying good quality Silk filled products, whether you are buying it from Costco or from your favorite bedding store. Make sure you get what is best for you.
Dust mites, bacteria and mold avoid materials that do not hold moisture, so you can rest comfortably knowing you are not sleeping with unwelcome guests. so that you can sleep well with your favorite duvet.
Mulberry Silk products are produced naturally and thus there is none to very little involvement of chemicals. Since the silk threads are also very soft, treating them with chemicals is not a good idea. So, you don’t have to worry about dangerous chemicals entering your body while you sleep.
Mulberry Silk is known to be completely and naturally free of any odor, the main reason for it being odorless is because of the natural breeding ground and diet of Silkworms.
Mulberry Silk is good for your skin because firstly it is chemical-free and secondly it does not accumulate bacteria and dust. Since silk is known to prevent bacteria from forming in your bedding, there is less chance that it would infect your skin. We all know bacteria is one of the leading causes of acne.
Mulberry Silk is known to have the strongest natural fiber in the world, which makes it incredibly durable. Silk fiber is compared to being stronger than steel if compared to; the same diameter.
If you are a hot sleeper and tend to wake up in the middle of the night sweating from the heat of your bedding?.......Trust me this is the option for you!!
Silk bedding saved my life…. literally!
Laura one of our customers was going through menopause and complained about waking up in the middle of the night in a pool of sweat. We suggested her Silk duvet, and she has been happy since! Good sleep is the key to a good life. Don’t you agree!!
If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night due to night sweats, it is because most synthetic fibers tend to trap air, which accumulates and makes you sweaty. But Silk fabric and structure naturally allow air to flow through and regulate the temperature of your body. This prevents overheating and helps you stay cool throughout the night.
At Down Under Bedding, we understand that everyone sleeps differently, and it is important to get high-quality products, which is why our Mulberry Silk Duvet is filled with 100% pure Mulberry Silk.
Getting a silk duvet cover with your silk-filled duvet is very important if you want the ultimate comfort and all benefits of your silk bedding. A cover made from any other material would not be able to provide all the benefits you want to experience. It will also partly undermine the breathability, lightweight, and hypoallergenic nature of the silk comforter.
Silk is a natural product and should be taken care of delicately. Always use a duvet cover for your duvet. They not only protect your duvet from getting dirty but also protects them from regular wear and tear.
We do not recommend that you wash your Silk filled products at home. It is always recommended that you check the manufacturer’s label for care instructions for your Silk products.
Use cold water to wash your silk-filled products and very less soap. Silk products tend to be natural and the use of chemical detergents could harm the fill.
The first piece of advice is that you use the spot-clean method; only clean the area that you feel is dirty. If you do plan to wash it in a heavy-duty machine, it is best to take it to a laundromat near you and for your duvets, you should always use the biggest machine while you are there. This gives your duvet ample space to move around and avoids clusters from forming.
Also, remember to never use any bleaching agents on your Silk duvet and products, this can damage the fibers and also shorten the lifespan of your silk bedding.
As for drying instructions; use Tumble Dry on the lowest heat possible. If you feel there is a need to air dry it, you could hang it in the sun if it is slightly damp. Do not hand under direct sunlight.
Hope this helps, if you still have any questions! Feel free to contact us and we would be glad to help you.
Have a luxurious sleep!
XOXO!!
]]>Duck Down is better thatn Goose Down! Keep reading to find out why.
Well, first things first- always know your options and do your research! So, are you looking for a firm pillow or a soft one? An easy-to-clean option with good insulation, or just a decorative option to add or enhance the look of your room? It’s always good to ask yourself these questions while scrolling through the best down pillows.
There is an option for everyone!!
So, what should you look for when buying a down pillow??
A good quality down pillow should be able to support your neck and head properly while also adapting to the shape of your head. Imagine tossing and turning throughout the night just because your pillow is not comfortable! Duh!
We get it, there are so many varieties of pillows to choose from, which can be perplexing. This is why we have decided to break them down into simple categories for a better understanding!
So, what are the pros and cons of a down pillow and why should you buy one!
Down pillows are known to be softer, fluffier, and easily moldable than any other pillow fill material out there, making them a great option for people who like to snuggle with a soft fluffy pillow.
They are extremely lightweight; we all know down is renowned for being super lightweight!
Down pillows are great for all sleepers- whether you are a side sleeper, back or stomach sleeper, down pillows, could be the option for you.
They are expensive!! Yes, you might get goosebumps checking the price! But once you have them, it’s worth every penny. I love my soft fluffy down pillow.
Since they are supposed to be fluffy, they tend to lack adequate loft- which means it is not a good option if you are looking to buy a firm pillow.
They also tend to get flat, with the weight of your head, so you might have to fluff it up every morning. Most down pillows are not hypoallergenic, so they may be a trigger for some sleepers.
Down pillows are the perfect option for people who like to sleep on soft surfaces. They can make you feel like you are sleeping in a cloud! Already dreaming ah!
According to sleepjunkie's review, there are advantages and drawbacks with down pillows.
"With feel, down is soft and fuzzy and have tons of loft. So they look very thick when they're just sitting on the bed. The drawback? Down Pillows can squish under weight so you need to fluff it back up every morning to bring back it's original loft.
You might want to consider the temperature also. Down pillows tend to retain heat and traps air. This is the reason why things like winter gear and comforters are made of down. It keeps you cozier than best suits during cold season.
Lastly, the cost. There's no question that down is expensive. However, since down is considered a premium item and lasts longer than feathers too, you can think of it as having a higher initial cost but long term wise, you are saving more since you're not replacing your pillows as often as possible."
Down pillows are mostly filled with down feathers or clusters of goose, duck, or waterfowl. These feathers are super soft and the pillows filled with pure down often tends to be more expensive since it is taken from the under-feathers of these birds as compared to regular feather-filled pillows.
Down is the light, airy and fluffy coating of small feathers that are found under the visible layer of feathers in birds such as; geese, ducks, and waterfowl. Down can be understood as dimensional clusters that are made up of fluffy filaments and have an undetectable quill. Pure Down is a lot lighter since they don't have long stems like that of feathers. Canadian Goose and feathers from Duck or geese are perfect for providing you with warmth and proper insulation if that is what you are looking for.
Duck down is the preferred type of down due to the cost compared to goose down which can be almost double. The composition of down feathers makes them lighter and fluffier than others, which adds to an airy and soft texture. Because of their light and fluffy, properties, pure down is also considered to be one of the best fillings for your quilt and fluffy pillows.
There are various kinds of down pillows available in a Marketplace like Down Under Bedding such as pure down pillows, hybrid pillows, and down alternative pillows.
“Goose Down is preferred since it tends to have less odor”
Down-filled pillows are known to be super soft and fluffy. This Empress White Down Face Pillow is the perfect choice for those who value the all-natural support and the softness of this down fill. Make sure you fluff them up every morning…while making your bed for a fresh look and feel?
Pure-down pillows are generally higher priced because they offer great softness and support. As these pillows are filled with pure down fill and no additional bird feathers, they tend to have a higher loft.
Down pillows are known for being super soft and can easily be compared to a flat pancake. Yes, a pancake……lol. This could be disadvantage to some people who don’t like to lay their bed every morning! Count me in.
But yes, down pillows are something that should be fluffed up every morning. Not a good option for big people, as down-filled pillows, can easily sink. Which would not be a comfortable choice as you are sleeping. A hybrid pillow or down alternative pillow should be the go-to option for heavy people or those who like to toss and turn around a lot at night.
Hybrid pillows are a mix of down fill and feathers. The positive side to buying this is that they feel as soft and snug as a regular down pillow, but are less expensive than a pure down-filled pillow. Check this Down Feather Chamber Bed Pillow in Canada from Down Under Bedding. This gives a perfect medium support that comes from the feathers, combined with the side gussets filled with down which gives the pillow added thickness and extra softness while ensuring the pillow holds its shape.
This is another advantage of a hybrid pillow, they are much cheaper than a pure down-filled pillow.
As you may have noticed, the price of down has been going up, (Down is going up….hahaha; Jokes apart) for the last five years. But this is where you can experience the similar ultimate comfort of a fluffy pillow for a lesser price.
This down pillow is good for all kinds of sleepers; whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, this would be a go-to choice for everyone. Or simply align them to match with your linen and things, as it works great as an added accessory to enhance the look of your room. Some people like to sleep with two pillows, and this works as a great option for that.
Moreover, since it has added feathers mixed with down fill; it is much firmer than a pure down-filled pillow.
Down alternative fill refers to pillows filled with synthetic and man-made polyester microfibers; these also include some natural fills such as wool.
Unlike pure down or chamber pillows with some down filling, down alternative pillows are completely hypoallergenic. They are also priced much lower than regular down pillows, which is a great option for those shopping on a budget.
These pillows are available in a variety of options and are super soft, you will feel like you are sleeping in a cloud. And they also absorb much less heat, which makes them perfect for hot sleepers.
Some are easily moldable, while some are available in more firm options, which makes it a great option for those who prefer to twist and turn throughout the night.
Although they feel and look the same as all other regular pillows, down alternative pillows are way more affordable when it comes to soft, fluffy pillows.
Some options for down alternative pillows are:
Bamboo pillows are exceptionally silky soft and designed to meet your eco-friendly lifestyle while providing excellent comfort for many years. They are breathable, lightweight, and great for all seasons. Along with being resistant to dust mites and did I mention, they are also hypoallergenic?
As everybody knows, wool is naturally temperature-regulating. A Wool pillow wicks away moisture and helps the body reach its ideal sleep temperature. Which helps you stay cool during the warm summer months and warm on cold winter nights. A great option for hot sleepers!! No need to switch sides at night because of too much sweating.
Our Down Under Washable Organic Wool Bed Pillow can be easily washed in your washing machine at home, saving you a ton of money by not having to dry-clean it. However, it is recommended that you Wash these pillows in a commercial-size laundromat, as this bedding soaks a lot of water. Delicate cycle wash in cold water, use a small amount of soap, and avoid fabric softener.
Well, well, down is not recommended for allergy sufferers as some people might be allergic to the down feathers. However, in some cases, manufacturers tend to provide down-filled hypoallergenic pillows (depends on the cleaning process used for your down fill).
It is always best to check with the manufacturer for details.
Down-filled pillows should not be washed in the washing machine.
It is always recommended that you check the manufacturer’s label for cleaning instructions on your pillows, but generally, pillows should not be washed in a laundry machine at home. Some can be dry-cleaned only.
It is also advisable that you clean them every 5-6 months to ensure there are no germs, bacteria, or odors.
Use a pillow protector: Regardless of which type of pillow you use, we recommend using a pillow protector and cleaning the pillow every 6 months to avoid dust mites and bacteria from forming.
Wash with care: Always check the label for cleaning instructions for your down-filled or any other pillow.
Pro Tip: It’s best to always use a cotton pillow protector for your down pillows. They are easy to wash and also save your expensive down-filled pillow from dust mites, germs, and mold.

Even though the premium Goose down is renowned for being super lightweight. It is also known to trap moisture which could leave you hot and sweaty during summer, but nothing like Down can help get you through the chilly winter months. To top it off,….this is the most lightweight material out there!
Warm, ultra-soft, and decadent, this bedding brings instantly elevates your space and can transform the way you sleep.
Wool filled bedding on the other hand helps keep you warm or cool throughout the year. It is naturally hypoallergenic, which makes it safer for kids and adults of all ages.
Yet, before you begin your search for the best wool or 100% down mattress toppers, pillows, duvets, and more, it's important to do your research.
When shopping for wool versus down comforters one thing to keep in mind is that both are naturally sourced fibers and come with a variety of pros and cons. However, it is up to you to decide what is better for you! But be sure to check out the pros and cons!!
Are you still counting sheep...Don't lose your sleep over which duvet to pick! Do not worry…..check out our list of differences between the two here:
So, let’s start with understanding what they are and what do they offer!
Ba ba black sheep……have you any wool!
Yes, sir...
Okay, let’s not get too nostalgic about the childhood poem we all have heard a million times. But it’s pretty clear now that most wool comes from sheep fur. But does it only come from sheep?? Put your thinking hat on! Or don't, I'll simply tell you.
Wool is made from the hair or fur of a variety of different types of animals, which can include sheep, goats, llamas, camels, and rabbits.
Since wool has a natural ability to absorb moisture, it helps to regulate your body’s temperature and humidity also relieving your body of thermal stress and ensuring a deep comfortable sleep throughout the night. Choosing a duvet cover made of breathable 100% Cotton helps to maintain an even body temperature throughout the night.
Check out our blog article How to take care of Wool Filled Bedding
The down of a goose or duck lies right beneath its outer, feather-filled covering. Most of the time, it's taken from the chest area or belly of the bird. No birds are harmed in the process. 100% down is the by-product of the food industry.
Compared to denser and heavier feathers, down is light and fluffy. It's also devoid of sharp quills.
Instead, every down cluster has a soft, round center called a plumage, and the fibers are not aligned or connected with one another.
Hope you got a better idea of the pros and cons of wool and down-filled bedding products. Both down and wool are natural, environmentally friendly options. But Wool has amazing temperature regulation properties unlike down which does not have the same moisture-wicking properties; this might lead to mildew or dust mites from getting inside your duvet.
Everyone sleeps differently, you may get overheated, which can then wake you up to toss off your bedding. Then after a while, you become cool, so you wake up once again so you can cover up. If this seems to be you then a wool-filled item seems to be a good option.
A wool-filled duvet might be a heavier and more uncomfortable option for some. Whereas, a down duvet is more lightweight, and is highly preferred by consumers.
Another major reason people prefer wool is because it is much more affordable than down fill.
Down Under Australian washable wool duvet comforter makes for an ideal warm and cozy bedding material. We understand that everyone sleeps differently, and the key to a goodnight’s sleep is choosing the bedding that’s right for you. That is why our wool quilt ensures to keep you warm and dry without any overheating issues.
Did I mention, if you have kids or pets at home- this is the perfect fit for you; You can simply toss it in the laundry just like your clothes. Not something you can do with a down duvet comforter.
Need I say more about wool? I know you are already an expert after so much reading. Right? (Wink, wink!)
Down is primarily found in the breast areas of a bird and is more difficult to separate, which is also one of the main reasons for it being more expensive than its other counterparts.
Down is often preferred because of its insulation properties; since it has an unstructured nature cluster, it helps trap air and provides us with more warmth.
If you are looking for a super warm and ultra-light material, then down is your go-to option! It provides more insulation than any other fill out there. Down is also a great option for compact or small sizes places such as apartments or condos as it is easily compressible; which makes it easy to store.
Another great reason to buy down-fill products is that they are durable and long-lasting. if taken care of properly. Natural down does not degrade as fast as synthetic materials which makes it a great money saver for the long term!
According to the experts at foyr.com:
"There are a variety of duvets and comforters in the market. Still, wool duvets and down comforters are the most popular owing to their thermoregulating properties and the comforts they offer.
But when choosing between these two, use the above information to decide the best one for your home. Take into consideration different factors like the harshness of weather in your area, possibilities of allergy, and sleeping style before zeroing down on one product."
Ultimately the decision is up to you. When shopping for duvets, keep in mind your needs. It’s best to always make a checklist and ask yourself some questions.
In this case, are you a hot sleeper or like to sleep light? Then go for down-filled products. Do you want something that is easily washable? If yes, then the best bet is to buy a washable wool duvet comforter.
Waking up in the middle of the night? Because your duvet just won’t stay in one place! And now you are stressing about how to keep duvet cover in place? Uggh….Is there a solution? Duvet cover ties come to the rescue.
We got you covered! Read along, so we can help you find all the answers to your sleeping needs!
Good Bedding accessories are an important factor when it comes to getting a comfortable sleep! So why lose sleep when you can get a super cozy one with the right choice of bedding items? Yes, whether it’s your duvet that keeps moving around all night, making you lose sleep or you are worried about going to college or another country and worried about finding the right-sized bedding. Don’t stress, we have all the answers to your needs!
Let me start by explaining why this happens, Duvets tend to move around inside the cover due to the fact that the duvet is not attached to the cover. As we toss and turn in our sleep, our duvets will also shift around inside the cover throughout the night. This can be an annoying problem, however, there is an easy fix for this: using duvet cover ties!
You can easily find these ties on the inside corners of your duvet cover. Or if you don’t have them on your duvet, you can simply sew them. We covered a separate article for How To Prevent Your Duvet From Moving In The Duvet Cover. This is a little D-I-Y technique you could do to simply save a few bucks, or if you are looking to buy some new duvet covers then Down Under Marketplace has the complete selection for duvet covers with ties.
To use these ties, you first have to make sure you are using the right size cover for your duvet. This is incredibly important, as you want to make sure that everything fits well; not too big and not too small. You would then have to lay your duvet on a flat surface and turn your cover inside out. Then, take the top two corners of your duvet and tie them to the corresponding corners of your duvet cover.
From here, you can then flip the cover so that the duvet is inside the cover. Then, continue attaching your duvet to the cover by tying the side ties and bottom corner ties. Easy-peasy! The last step is to close the duvet corner and give it a nice shake or fluff to make it nice and perfect. When wash day comes and you need to give your cover some cleaning, you can easily untie the cover ties, take out the cover, and put in a fresh new cover by repeating the above-mentioned steps. No more shifting duvets!
Bet you never thought about this, but your duvet serves as a multipurpose item. You can use it as a flat sheet or even a top sheet!! Yes, you don’t need to use it as a cover just because of its name. You can simply use your cover as a blanket during both the summer and winter months. Some people prefer to use a cotton duvet cover during the summer months, and a flannel or other warm material during the winter. This saves you space, now you only need two covers or maybe even one depending on your choice.
Yaay! No need to part ways with your favorite duvet cover just because it’s summer. Because all you have to do is take out the duvet comforter (insert) and pack it away for the time being.
Some people prefer using a duvet cover simply as a sheet, and they simply slide a blanket either on top or at the bottom of the duvet cover. This also means that you have more layers when sleeping. You could simply use a duvet cover as a sheet between your body and your blanket that is the duvet comforter you are using.
Having a duvet cover also means you get to decide what type of material goes inside, you could use a thin IKEA comforter for your needs or maybe use a good quality, wool quilt from Woolrom. Or use it as it is. Regardless of how you prefer to use your duvet cover, it offers you the simplicity to be used as-is. Did you know your giant pillowcase (pun intended) your duvet cover not only lets you accessorize your room but also saves you space? No need to find another sheet for the summers, when you can just use what is there.

Well, let’s not confuse a comforter with a duvet. As you may be familiar a duvet and a comforter do have some slight differences between them. Yes…it’s not just the name that varies for each country but also depends on the purpose of each.
Duvet Vs. Comforter Debate: Which One Is Right For You?
A flat sheet often referred to as a top sheet, is placed on top of your mattress, they can be understood as simple rectangular pieces of fabric that lie on top of your bed. When compared to fitted sheets, they have elastic corners to simply fit under your mattress- making it easy to snug under your mattress, whereas flat sheets do not have elastic corners and can be placed on any sized mattress. Of course, if it fits!
As simple as flat sheets sound, they help protect your mattress from getting dirty, by acting as a layer of protection between your mattress and your body. They are easy to clean and should be cleaned as often as once or twice every two weeks. Just like your duvet covers, flat sheets can also be used as a top sheet for yourself during the summer months.
As Vero linen explains
“Although Cotton Duvet Covers are easily washed, a Flat Sheet is easier to wash and place on the bed than a Duvet Cover.”
This is because you are in direct contact with your sheet more often than you are with your duvet.
Do you find yourself sitting on your bed often, sometimes even without using a top sheet which is your quilt, but you are sitting on your bedsheet? This gives you more reason to clean it more often.
Now you know about the benefits and uses of a flat sheet, but when it comes to buying one you must be wondering about the thread count! Are higher thread count sheets better?
There is a lot of humor around that the higher thread count means better, but is that true? Well, thread count should not be the only factor when looking for sheets. You should also consider the fiber, weave, and yarn structure when selecting the best bedding. To answer your questions about thread counts, we made a separate blog for this: Everything You Need to Know About Bedding Thread Count
Temperature plays a huge role in how well we sleep. Feeling too hot in your sleep can be caused by different factors such as inconsistent room temperature and having the wrong nightwear, mattress, or bedding, among other things. If you are constantly waking up because of excess heat, we have two great solutions for you.
First and foremost, regulating your room temperature is important-- experts agree that the ideal temperature is anywhere between 60 degrees to 67 degrees. Another fact to keep in mind is that our own body temperature changes throughout the different stages of sleep.

Bamboo bedding is also an excellent choice for hot sleepers. If you are a hot sleeper who is on the search for the ideal duvet, we recommend the Down Under 100% Bamboo Duvet-- its advantage is that it does not require a top sheet. There are many different bedding sizes available in the market, and we understand it can all get overwhelming and confusing when choosing the right size. It’s even more complicated by the fact that different countries will have different sizing! An essential tip is to measure the size of your mattress and choose bedding that matches the size accordingly.
If you are having trouble with sizing, here’s a guide to the different sizes that we offer at Down Under:
Twin Extra Long - As the name suggests, this is a longer version of the Single/Twin bed, measuring 39" x 80" inches or 99 cm x 203 cm. This allows extra legroom for growing kids and tall adults, making it perfect for young adolescents and college students living in dorm rooms.
Double/Full - This mattress measures 54″ x 75″ inches, or 137 cm x 190.5 cm. It serves as an “in-between” size that falls between the Single/Twin Extra Long and the Queen size bed. It offers plenty of wide and lengthy space, making it a comfortable choice for solo adults. It is best suited for small apartments, guest bedrooms, and even dorm rooms.
Queen - The classic queen bed measures 60″ x 80″ inches or 152.5 cm x 203 cm. This is a popular bed size for couples, however, it can also be used by solo sleepers who need a lot of space. Because this is a popular size, it is easy to find a large variety of accessories such as duvet covers, fitted bed sheets, and comforters for a Queen size bed.

]]>Did you ever realize that you spend more than one-third of your life in your bed? Wow…. Interesting isn’t it. Anyway…. Let’s get back to the point, spending so much time in your bed also means having the comfort that you desire. Having a great mattress, duvet and pillow can undesirably affect the quality of your sleep if you do not have good material for the outer covering of those. But with so many options out there, it can be a difficult choice to make.
We get it! It can be very overwhelming but finding the perfect choice that makes you feel comfortable as well as matches your needs can be a tough choice. Luckily, we have made the ultimate list of things you would want to look for when buying your bedding!
Finding the perfect material for your bedding would help bring you comfort along with a good night’s sleep, but what is the best material remains one of the most asked questions. Now let’s dive into what some of the most popular choices are out there!
As you may be familiar with, most of the materials for bedding are available in either natural or synthetic options. Just like anything else, they come with their advantages and downsides.
Natural fibers are made from natural materials, that are spun into threads, and yarns to be later knit or woven into fabric materials. Natural Fibers are classified into two main categories, plant-based, and animal-based. They are mostly derived from sustainable and renewable sources, which makes them environmentally friendly. Yayy! Save the planet while you sleep peacefully! Most natural fibers are also hypoallergenic which makes them ideal for those suffering from allergies. Also safe for newborns!
Synthetic fibers are made from man-made products that are mostly chemically produced, such as rayon, polyester, and acrylic. These fibers are extracted using a chemical process and are generally cheaper and easily produced as compared to natural fibers. These man-made artificial fibers are exceptionally durable and long-lasting which is great for many people. Mostly preferred for outdoor clothing fabrics.

Let’s start by talking about how to pick the best sheets!
The look of our rooms especially our bed linens and covers plays a major role in affecting our quality of sleep, which is why you should look for good quality bedding materials.
Most bed sheet material falls into three categories that are cotton, silk, and linen.
Make a note! You would want to check the fiber content of your fabric first. Fiber determines what material your bed linens are constructed from. This should be your priority when looking at the best materials for your bedding. The quality of fiber is important for various factors as it helps determine the softness, weight, and also durability of your bedding.
Most bed sheet materials fall between these three categories cotton, silk, and linen.
According to the experts at MasterClass.com:
"Cotton is a staple fiber produced from the cotton plant, part of the genus Gossypium and the family Malvaceae.
Cotton is a staple fiber, which means it is composed of different varying lengths of material. Cotton fabric is made from the natural fibers of cotton plants. The part of the cotton plant that becomes the fabric is the part that grows in the boll, the encasing for the fluffy cotton fibers. Cotton is a soft and fluffy material that is spun and woven to create a durable fabric."
This is one of the most widely used fibers today. No surprise about it! Cotton is one of the most comfortable and breathable fabric materials for your bedding choice. It is incredibly soft to touch, easy to care for, and also long-lasting. Cotton linens are one of the most popular choices for bedding because of their natural breathing abilities. Cotton has amazing absorbent properties that help wick moisture away from your body, allowing air to circulate through the fabric, which helps heat escape naturally through your body, allowing you to sleep comfortably throughout the night.
This is one of the Softest and finest qualities of cotton available, as it’s made from an extra-long staple giving it a very soft and durable touch. Pima has long- fibers which are great for bed sheets.
Not as soft and durable as Pima, as it’s made from short cotton fibers. But what’s countless about this type of cotton is that it is very affordable and one of the most common.
Egyptian cotton is one of the highest qualities of cotton staples, also known as the most luxurious variety. This is preferred by many as it’s made from the highest quality cotton staple (extra-long) and gives your sheets a soft and breathable ability.
Soft, luxurious, and silky- the top three things which come to the mind when we refer to silk bedding. Can you just imagine yourself in those silk sheets! Silk is a luxurious, soft fabric that feels smooth on the skin. It is also naturally hypoallergenic and resists mold, fungi, and other allergens from forming. Silk sheets are great for keeping you warm during the chilly winter months and cool during the summer. It absorbs less moisture than any other fabric, which is great for those with dry skin. Another reason to buy Silk bedding. This might be your go-to option for the most popular bedding choice material that keeps you cool. You might be wondering about the best quality silk sheets, so let's understand the types of Silk bedding available out there.
Silk bedding is usually found in two types, Tussah and Mulberry Silk
Tussah Silk also known as raw silk or Silk in its natural state is used for making bed sheets, duvet covers, and more. On the first touch, it might feel stiff as it is made with short coarse fibers. This type of silk is produced from wild silkworms which are not yet bred. One advantage of Tussah Silk is that it does not wrinkle easily. Also, this quality of silk is easily and cheaply available and is different from Mulberry Silk.
This is one of the highest qualities of Silk available out there. These silk sheets have a reputation for being super luxurious and can last you long if taken care of properly. Mulberry silk is made from the cocoons of the larvae of the Mulberry silkworms that are reared in captivity; it is formed from the silkworms of the Bombyx mori moth. Mulberry Silk is known to contain protein fibers that are healthy for your hair and skin. It is also hypoallergenic giving you another great reason to purchase it.
You must have heard about soft cotton bed sheets with high thread count! But let this not be the only factor when deciding the best bed sheets. The first decision before looking at the fill is looking at the fiber content of your sheets. Thread count matters, but the highest isn't always the best.
But what is thread count? The term "thread count" describes how many strands or threads there are in one square inch of cloth, including both horizontal and vertical threads. It shows how tightly the fabric is woven. Although it is a rough gauge of fabric softness, this number does not always indicate higher quality.
Checking for the thread count and wondering, what’s the good thread count for sheets? Well, a higher thread count should not the only factor when looking at good-quality bed sheets. Though usually, this is the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about bed sheets, the truth is it does not matter as much.
Finding the best luxurious material for your sheets should not be so challenging. Wouldn’t it be so great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for 10 minutes and come out wrinkle-free……and three sizes smaller??
If you're still curious what thread count is all about, check out our Everything You Need to Know About Bedding Thread Count blog.
What best material for your duvet comforter tends to be your own choice. However, we've also listed some of the most popular materials used for your warm duvets.
This is one of the most common choices, especially for people who sleep in cold countries. When it comes to duck there are two types, duck down and goose down with both are equally good, but depends on your preference and needs.
Down works exceptionally well for keeping you warm during a chilly wintry night. Really! Nothing compares to keeping you warm as a down-filled product. Down is also super lightweight and compressible. The saying as light as a feather should be changed to as light as down!
Another great thing about down feather is that it resists clumping; down feathers are so light and flexible that they can easily mold into any shape and form, which also makes them easy to store.
Check out this Goose Down All-Season Duvet from Down Under Bedding.
Wool is another popular material used for your duvet comforters. Its unique temperature-regulating abilities help keep you warm during winters and cool during summers. A great choice too, if you and your partner are people living on opposite sides of the thermostat! You know what I mean!
Wool is a natural fiber and is also hypoallergenic and anti-inflammatory. You can also use them for your child’s bedding. You’ll be able to sleep in peace knowing your baby is safe. Wool fiber has naturally hypoallergenic which helps keep dust mites, bacteria, and other allergens away. Another great thing about Down Under Bedding’s Wool Duvet is that they are machine washable too.
Cotton and Silk fillings are great fill options for your duvet comforters just like they are for your bed sheets. Some people may be allergic to wool but can go for a Silk filled comforter, which provides similar benefits as wool. Cotton on the other hand is super effective in absorbing moisture and sweat from your body while keeping you cool during the night. A great option for people residing in warm climatic regions.
Many people are unaware of the amazing benefits that bamboo has to offer but let me warn you. Once you use bamboo sheets, you might fall in love with it. Yes! It is that awesome! Bamboo bedding is super luxurious, and soft and can provide you comfort throughout the year.
Just like natural wool, this 100% bamboo-filled duvet has temperature-regulating abilities that help wick moisture away from your body, ensuring you get a good night’s sleep. The only drawback of bamboo-filled bedding is that it cannot be washed.
Who doesn’t love to sleep on a fluffy comfy pillow, right? But that is not the only thing you need to look for in a pillow. Choosing the right pillow could help you not only get a comfortable sleep but also help mitigate body pain. Whereas picking out the wrong one could simply make things worse.
The first thing you need to decide on is the right material! Ask yourself about your sleep position. Which position you sleep in determines the fill of pillow you should look for.
If you are a side sleeper you may want to go for something thicker and firmer such as latex, down, or even a natural bamboo pillow. As a side sleeper, it is important that your neck and head are aligned with your spine, which is why a thicker pillow is recommended. Check out Down Under Bedding's White Goose Down High Profile Firm Pillow that is perfect of side sleepers.
But if you prefer sleeping on your back, you may want to choose a pillow that is fairly low in position, while also being flat and soft. An example of this is the 100% Goose Down Soft Low Profile Pillow from Down Under Bedding. Experts suggest you go for a pillow that helps support your neck, head, and lower back. Memory foam, feather-filled, and silk-filled pillows do the best job for this. Wool-filled pillows are another great choice for back sleepers.
Well, if you are one of the few people who like to sleep on their stomachs, then you may want to go for something softer and thinner. Sleeping on your stomach puts a lot of stress on your neck, shoulders, and back, which is why you should get the right pillow to support the spine. One of the most favorable choices is down-filled pillows like the Goose Down Medium Profile Pillow.
These consist of duck down, goose down, or feather fill; and are amongst the most popular choice of pillow fills. Feathers are one of the fluffiest and lightest materials out there, which gives a very soft and fluffy look to your pillow. The only drawback of this pillow is that it easily molds your head in the way and may also cause your head to sink in the pillow. Or may get as flat as a pancake! But you can easily fluff it up back to normal.
Want to know more about feather filled pillows? Check out our Choosing The Best Luxury Down Pillow article.
Well, can a Wool filled pillow helps you sleep better? Wool filled pillows are super durable and can last you years without losing their shape. Most wool pillows can also be adjusted according to your comfort level and they're washable too! Take a look at Down Under Bedding Washable Wool Pillow.
This is one of the most popular pillows. Silk filled pillow serve as a great option for all position sleepers. They are also a great option for hot sleepers as silk helps wicks away moisture from your body, helping you stay dry and comfy during the night.
The final choice comes to your personal needs, but some options you might want to look at could be the climate, your washing habits, and last but not least your personal preference. Climate sometimes overpowers your personal choice if you are residing in a warm area, you might go for a down or wool-filled product. But if you live in a warm country then you may opt for some cooler fabrics such as cotton or bamboo. Washing your bedding items also plays a huge role; as you need to be able to take care of your bedding products. If you love Silk bedding but don’t have time to clean it then you should not purchase it. Your own needs a.k.a Personal preference is another factor that plays an important role in deciding what you like vs. what your needs are. You may be a hot sleeper and your partner could be one who always feels cold. I can relate!! Can you? This is when you may want to look at wool, because of its amazing temperature-regulating ability.
Hope this helps!
Have a good night!!

]]>Down duvets are a luxurious and cozy addition to any bedroom, but many people don't know how to properly clean them. Although washing down duvets at home can be a difficult process, with the proper techniques and methods, you can quickly get excellent results. We’re going to share our time-tested technique for cleaning down duvets at home in this article.
Over the years, our bedding quilts, duvets, and comforters accumulate dust, allergens, and germs that could ruin your peaceful sleep. So, you must clean your bedding items at least one to two times per year. It is even possible??
Yes, there is a way to clean your duvet at home, I did clean mine, but you should be careful and do it at your own risk! First things first, I do have to remind you that it is always better to check the label for the manufacturer’s wash care instructions. And if you do plan to wash it at home, it will void the manufacturer's warranty. Don't tell me I didn't warn you!
What to do if I want to avoid taking it to the cleaners? Is there any other option? Yes, as promised, I am going to tell you how I managed to clean my down duvet without taking it to the dry cleaners! Ahaaa….it is possible and also saves you a ton of money!
Even though most down duvets and comforters are machine washable, it is best that you do that in a large commercial-size washing machine which is at a laundromat near your place of stay. A home-sized washing machine could work for your twin or small-sized duvet, but it could also compress the down fill inside.
It is always recommended that you wash the comforter on a gentle or delicate cycle with lukewarm water for the best results. However, every comforter is different, and it is always best to check the manufacturer's label for detergent suggestions.
Time For a Little Secret...🤫
To be honest, I have washed my down duvet many times at home and even though it comes out flat at first scares me every time, it does fluff up after drying. But again, this is only for my down duvet……only do this if you are fine risking it. Just to remind you again……if you do wash it yourself whether, at home or a laundromat, it does void the manufacturer’s warranty.
We all know how busy and messy life can be when we have kids and pets at home. Be it pet hair or the mess kids make, simply can’t avoid it, otherwise, what’s the fun of having them in the first place? But you can simply wash your duvet…… Yes, there are budget-friendly options, apart from your home washing machine.
Now, since you are searching for a laundromat already, let me remind you to pick out the biggest laundry machine available there. I will tell you why.....keep scrolling!
Before you take your duvet or comforter to the laundry or laundromat, make sure to check the tags for the manufacturer’s instructions about washing requirements and precautions. You must follow the instructions on the label, as some fabrics may state to avoid certain detergents and chemicals. It is important to always check for instructions pertaining to washing; that is if the duvet can be washed in your washing machine or do you need to take it for dry-clean.
Depending on the size of your duvet or comforter you may want to take it for professional cleaning, most dry cleaners clean duvets for a fraction of the price……nothing compared to the ease of mind.
After you are confident about the washing technique for your duvet, you should check for any rips and slits on the comforter or duvet. Improper cleaning or other any small mishaps could cause your duvet to rip. This would help prevent the fill from getting out of the quilt. Be sure to sew and repair any mishaps you may find to avoid getting your blanket from getting thin due to leaky fills.
When you remove the duvet from the duvet cover, be sure to check the condition of the duvet for any wear and tears, duvets do wear out with time and this is when you should get your sewing kit out. But first hold your duvet against the light to properly check for any mishaps, or areas that might be void of down. If you find too many areas void of down filling……then you might want to consider replacing them with new ones.
Yes, this is a significant step…. Make sure your duvet fits in the washing machine, whether it is at your home or at your nearby laundromat service. And of course, leave some spare room for it to freely twirl around during the wash cycle. If your down-filled quilt, will not get enough space then it is likely to be compressed and the fill may just clam onto one side of the washer.
The best advice is to opt for the biggest-sized commercial washer at your local laundromat.
PRO TIP: Wrap up a few tennis balls in clean white socks to avoid leaving any marks on your clean duvet. This helps spread the fill load evenly in your washing machine and keep our down fill to evenly distributed. Lastly, dry as per instructions on your duvet’s care label.
We understand that you may not wash your down duvet as often as you may wash your comforter because of its bulkiness. But you should wash it more than one to two times a year. We would suggest you use a laundromat instead of home laundry, this is because of its size. Laundromats are usually three times the size of a household machine and provide the duvet comforter with ample space to move during the wash cycle.
Keeping in mind the guidelines from your duvets tag; the first step should be to spot-clean your comforter with the right stain remover. This would make it easier to get rid of stains. After this, you should let your comforter or duvet soak for a while.
Even though, it may be advisable to use bleach for duvets and comforters in general. Let me warn you that bleach can be hard on cotton and down feathers, even though it helps get rid of dust mites. The best way would be to check the label for the manufacturer’s instructions.
While washing your duvet comforter insert in the washing machine, it is always advisable to wash it in a gentle or delicate cycle and run it twice to ensure that it is rinsed properly. You may notice that your down comforter has gotten flat after washing it in the machine……don’t worry, it’s normal……wait until it gets dried up.
Pro Tip: Placing a rubber or tennis ball (or even several coins tightly wrapped in a sock) inside a clean sock in the machine with your duvet could help you down the duvet from knotting up.
Another option we would highly recommend is that you use a laundromat that has a commercial-sized washing machine. The commercial-sized machines have sufficient space for your duvet to move around and help the down feather to not compress or cluster on one side of the comforter, as compared to a home laundry machine. It is still always advisable to check the label for the manufacturer’s instructions for this, as they may strictly recommend using a professional service.
The next best, most time-efficient, and budget-friendly option is to simply toss your duvet comforter insert in the washing machine at home. But the big question here is that can it be treated like regular laundry? If you have a full-sized laundry machine, then the answer is, yes, you may wash it at home.
Nevertheless, if you do not have a large washing machine, then head to a commercial wash site. They usually have washing machines three times the size of the ones we have at home and can wash a massive duvet easily.
If you are washing your down duvet comforter at home, keep in mind the following:
Dry the Comforter Thoroughly……this is significant otherwise mold, and mildew could be formed inside your duvet or comforter. You should also let your blanket dry in the air for a while to check for any damp spots before putting on a duvet cover.
Remember!! When using the dryer: try to remove the duvet every 30 minutes or so and shake it up the long side (this would help prevent fluffs and clumps to cluster on one side). Keep repeating the process until your down duvet is completely dry. Avoid direct sunlight if you plan to dry it outside.
It is advisable to let it in the air for a while but not dry it under the sun, and never use line drying due to the risk of dampness and clumps forming. Always let it cool for a while after taking it out of the dryer and putting a cover on!
Keep your duvet comforter insert clean for longer by protecting it with a duvet cover. It is easier to take off the duvet cover and toss it in your home laundry machine than to wash the whole duvet every time. Regardless, you should wash both as often as possible. If you have a duvet, you may want to wash the duvet cover more typically, say whenever you change your bedsheet. As for a comforter, you should consider adding a duvet cover to it, to prevent it from getting dirty every so regularly.
Oh……do remember, even if you intend to wash your duvet comforter at a laundromat……check for the biggest size washing machine available. Not only does this help your duvet from getting clumped up, but also makes it cleaner. If you have small kids at home or even pets, then buying a washable duvet is highly recommended.
Just a little reminder again……always be sure to check manufacturer’s labels for wash and care instructions for your down-filled bedding items. But as I mentioned, washing it yourself voids the manufacturer’s warranty.
Good luck with whatever you decide!!
XOXO, Sleep fresh!
]]>You should wash your bedding every once in a while, pretty much once in two weeks. And if you have kids or pets at home, then you need to do it more often. Sure, but in this busy life who really has the time to wash your bedding that often? We get it, which is why we are going to save you some time and tell you some crazy cleaning tricks to make you do your laundry faster.
Wouldn’t it be so great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for 10 minutes and come out wrinkle-free……and three sizes smaller??
Each day, your sheets are covered in body oil, dead skin cells, sweat, and saliva. I know! How gross right? It gets worse. Did you ever take some time to wonder that we spend about one-third of our lives sleeping Au lit (in bed), and since we spend so much time on it, does it also means more dust mites and germs? Yes, just like a haven for dirt!! Gross isn’t it!
This makes it a haven for dust mites. These microscopic pests actually feed on what our bodies shed throughout the night. You can’t see them with your naked eye, but they are there! The amount of shedding the human body does in one night is enough to feed 1 million dust mites!
Many people have severe allergies to dust mites, especially their excrement. Yes, you read right. These dust mites are totally pooping in the bed. I am grossed out just even thinking about it! This is why it is so very important to wash your sheets frequently, to avoid the build-up of dirt and dust mites.
You have to also wash and freshen up your bedding as often as possible too, as over time, dirt and debris can build up in the pillow, comforter, and mattress cover where dust mites can start to collect over time as well.
According to the experts at Mayoclinic:
"The first treatment for controlling dust mite allergy is avoiding dust mites as much as possible. When you minimize your exposure to dust mites, you can expect fewer or less severe allergic reactions. However, it's impossible to completely eliminate dust mites from your environment. You may also need medications to control symptoms."
This stresses the importance of washing your duvets and keeping them clean.
Hope I didn’t scare you too much about the germs in your bed sheets. Well, now that you have decided to wash it, let me walk you through how you should go about it.
The first question we all have with linens is what setting should we wash the bed sheets on? Also, can I wash my bedsheets with my clothes? Your Daniadown or other bed sheets and linens, pillowcases, and duvet covers included are pretty much made of similar if not the same fabric material.
Sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers are what you need to concentrate on washing more because your body is in direct contact with this fabric material. And you might be surprised how easy they are to care for. Not only they are easy to remove, but most bed sheets are also pretty easy to wash.
Just like always, I keep on reminding you to read the labels and follow the specific cleaning instructions. Even though most sheets can be washed at home, you might want to have a look to make sure.
Well… the MINIMUM is once every two weeks, but ideally, you should be changing them and washing them once a week. With mattress covers and pillow protectors, these things can be washed once a month as they do not collect as much dirt because of the sheets. It is important to wash your pillows and comforter as well when possible or have them dry cleaned at least twice a year, averaging once every six months or sooner.
Cotton sheets like this 500TC 100% Cotton Sheet, can be washed on the hottest water temperature setting available. Usually, that is washing it at 90 degrees. This helps kill the germs and bacteria that thrive in your bedding.
We also recommend you hang dry your sheet in sunlight, as it could help disinfect and brighten the whites. If the weather does not permit it, then tumble-drying them is fine. But if you want to sanitize them further, then you could also iron them (helps kill the last bit of germs).
Pro Tip: Use Vinegar to soften your bed sheets and towels. Yes, Vinegar acts as a great substitute if you have run out of fabric softener. Also, a great thing about vinegar is that it does not cause any skin irritations.
We all know it can be a big task to wash your bulky duvet comforter. But let’s face it, they have to be cleaned. Most people prefer taking them to the cleaners as it saves them time and a lot of effort when you decide to do it yourself. But if you are wondering how you could save some money then you might want to know this. It is possible to clean your down duvet comforter at home; in case you are wondering, you should definitely check out our blog on How To Wash A Duvet Comforter.
The first step as always will be to read the manufacturing label for instructions! I can’t stress enough how important this is since, washing it at home would void the manufacturing guarantee.
Let’s get started on how to wash your duvet comforter at home. The first thing when washing a duvet is to remove the duvet cover and wash the cover separately. Another thing you would want to keep in mind is to check for the size of your washing machine. If you feel that your washing machine is small, and you do not want to dry clean your duvet, you could simply take it to a laundromat service machine nearby. We recommend you use the biggest-size washing machine, while you are at the laundromat.
Now while I have you here, let me tell you how you should wash your duvet. make sure of the water temperature setting. If you are washing a down duvet — then washing it on a cold setting would prevent it from shrinking. Always use mild liquid detergent when washing your blankets that contain down or wool fill. We suggest you refrain from using fabric softeners for your down duvets as they could harm the fill.
Why not just buy duvets that are washable like these Down Under Light Weight Mulberry Silk Duvet or the Down Under Bedding’s Australian Wool Duvet that we recommend you wash in a Commercial size machine.
Hack 101: Do you find that your down duvet knots up when you wash it? Try placing a rubber or tennis ball, if you can’t find one then you could also just wrap a bunch of coins in a sock and throw it in with your duvet comforter.
Most people don’t realize that pillows also accumulate dirt and germs over the years. Even though a pillow cover helps protect your pillow from getting dirty that often, it is recommended that you wash your pillow once or twice every year. We don’t tend to give too much thoughts on buying a good pillow as we do to when looking for a mattress but buying a good pillow of the right size is equally important. Check out our latest Pillow Collection to explore your options.
Unless your pillow is labeled “dry clean only”, we suggest you wash it. Pillows should be washed in a gentle setting for the shortest time while most pillows can be machine washable, others strictly should be dry cleaned only. If you are looking to remove a particular stain from your pillow, you may want to spot-clean the area, otherwise, you could just toss it in the washer.
Well, the first step as always is to check the label and follow instructions, but you should also check the fill material for your pillow. If you have a down of feather filled pillow you could use a small amount of detergent and put the machine in the most gentle/delicate setting available.
Another great purchase is the washable wool pillow, which helps save you bucks as you do not have to rush to the dry cleaners every time this pillow gets dirty. All you need to do is toss it in the washer on a delicate cycle (use cold water and a small amount of soap) and give it a spin.
But if you have a memory foam or latex pillow you might have to hold off on the washing. These cannot be washed, which is why they should be checked and cleaned by the spot cleaning method. Removing stains and spots when you see them can help increase the life span of these pillows.
Tip: Have you heard about the tennis ball hack? Throwing tennis balls inside the dryer with your clothes can help your pillow to dry faster. Well, you might want to throw in two t three to keep them nice and fluffy. Could also work with duvets and comforters.
Have you ever looked at the last few loads few loads of laundry and considered just throwing them away?
Certain bedding is not washable, as it can ruin the integrity or quality of the product. Down and silk duvets and pillows, for example, are not machine washable, and have to be spot cleaned or dry-cleaned only.
Spot cleaning is easy to do at home with some water and a mild detergent of your choosing. You only need a small amount of soap. Rinse with a clean cloth soaked in water. The best way to freshen a comforter or pillow that can’t be washed is by letting it hang in the sun for a few hours.
This actually dries up the filling and restores its vigor and airing out the filling as well gives it a fresher scent. Heat is the best way to kill germs and viruses, especially in direct sunlight. You can do this every few months, or as often as you like, as this is not harmful to your bedding.
Some bedding that is safe to tumble dry, you can throw into the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes which is very effective in killing bacteria as well as freshening up your bedding. This also helps to fluff and redistribute the filling inside your bedding.
You should also fluff and shake out your pillows and comforters every morning after use to restore shape and plumpness.
Bleach should only be used on cotton and always be sure to use color-safe bleach. Only use chlorine bleach on white sheets. If you are looking for bleach alternatives, there are products like ‘Out - White Brite’ which helps with whitening any stains or off-coloring that may happen to your white sheets.
There are also oxygen-based bleaches like ‘Oxiclean’ which is safe on most fabrics. Always read the instructions before utilizing bleach or bleach alternatives. Some people choose to use hydrogen peroxide to help disinfect their bedding. The general rule of thumb is to add one cup of this stuff into your wash. Works like a charm!
Alternatively to hydrogen peroxide, there is something called Borax, an all-natural detergent booster that basically raises the alkalinity of the water, which helps in killing germs and bacteria. Only ½ a cup of Borax added to your wash, apparently does wonders!
Now let’s talk about some detergents. You can also use baking soda in your wash to give it added cleaning power. There are even liquid detergents out there with baking soda added to them, like Arm & Hammer laundry detergent.
You also have your typical detergents like Gain and Sunlight. There are specialized detergents out there as well. Some are meant specifically for wool, like Woolite. Or perhaps you are someone who looks for an Earth-friendly option.
There are plenty of eco-friendly laundry detergents on the market now. Tide has even gotten into the game of natural-based, with its Free & Gentle line of laundry detergent. Other popular more natural and earth-friendly brands are EcoMax and Method, which both have a liquid laundry detergent you can try.
Overloading the washer, using fabric softener, using bleach on non-cotton sheets, not using a stain remover/pre-treating stains, using too much detergent, over drying your sheets, washing bedding with other laundry items, using dryer sheets, piling up your dirty sheets or leaving them in a basket that has no airflow. Ignoring your pillows - some people never clean them ever!
Also, a reminder again, to check the label for the manufacturer’s instructions!!
]]>Even though both Duck down and goose down are found on birds, there is a lot of difference when it comes to choosing which is the best in terms of filling for your comforter, duvet, or pillow. The type of filling inside your product is one of the most important factors that determine the quality and price of what you are paying for!!
The type of filling directly affects the warmth, weight, price, and feel of your duvet or quilt, as well as deciding the right insulation material could help you get a comfortable sleep. We understand the confusion when it comes to deciding the best and warmest material to get you through the snappy cold. What’s all the hype with goose down? Does the lighter, cheaper duck down compare to the tried and true goose down?
We get it, you have a lot of questions when it comes to deciding what’s best for you and your family, and that is why we have created a complete step-by-step guide to answer all your questions!!
Duck down and goose down are the most common type of naturally filled products used for duvets, pillows, and jackets, to help provide the perfect warmth to get you through the chilly winters! Even though both come from waterfowl species of birds, which gives them a similar structure, they do have some differences between them.
So, what makes them so special?
Although goose down and duck down are structurally similar, you may notice that goose down is often more expensive and more desired than duck down. This is because Goose down does not have any odor. Whereas Duck down might have a slight odor. This highly depends on the quality of the loft and the cleanliness of the product.
Wait wait…… Before we get into the specifics of duck down and goose down, let’s get to know what is down!!
Down is the light, airy and fluffy coating found under the visible feathers seen in birds; geese, or ducks. Down can be understood as three-dimensional clusters that are made up of fluffy filaments and have an undetectable quill. The type of down used to fill your duvet, comforter, or pillow helps determine the insulation and warmth-generating ability of your product.
Down helps create warmth through a process known as lofting- this refers to the fluffiness of the down. Pure Down is a lot lighter since they don't have long stems like that of feathers. Duck or Goose down is perfect for providing you with warmth and proper insulation if that is what you are looking for. Because of their light and fluffy, properties, goose down is also considered to be one of the best fillings for your quilt and fluffy pillows.
Down also can absorb moisture and sweat released by our bodies, which helps ensure a cozy and calm sleep during the night. It also has the wonderful ability to breathe which ensures proper regulation of temperature and gives it one of the best insulation properties when it comes to heating and cooling features. You might notice Goose down to be a more expensive option as compared to duck down because it is difficult to obtain.
Goosedown has always been considered to be like caviar!! Goosedown clusters are generally larger than duck down because they come from larger birds bought up in colder climatic conditions. As a result of their natural environments, goose tends to have naturally larger feathers than duck down. Consequently, their down tends to produce higher and better fill power. Their larger filaments help trap more heat, which helps results in better insulation for your warm winter products.
Goosedown also tend to have less to no odor as compared to duck down, because of their dietary factors. Geese mostly eat grass!!
Goose down tends to be less is also less greasy in appearance as compared to duck down, which has a naturally oily texture. The natural oil in duck down could add some amount of weight to the overall down-filled product, which might affect the fill power and loft quality. Since goose down is much stronger than duck down, a product with 100% goose down filling also has better fill power.
Now you can see what’s all the hype about!!
Duck down is a by-product of the meat industry! The birds are not harvested or killed for their down fur as they are mainly raised for meat, eggs, and foie grass (mostly all goose and duck are eaten in China, which is where these birds are mostly harvested). Even though the majority of the fill come from China, they are also produced in Canada, Turkey, Poland, Hungary, and many other European destinations.
In the last few years, the demand for goose down has drastically increased. Down is going up (pun intended). Even though goose down is more expensive as compared to duck down, the demand for goose down fill has continued to rise, because of its higher premium quality fill.
The most significant difference between goose down and duck down is its fill power. But what does it mean.....? Fill helps determine the quality of your bedding in terms of fluffiness and softness. More fill means that the fill power is higher, and the comforter duvet will provide you with more warmth. It also helps determine the quality and durability of the quilt, as a duvet with higher fill would mean it lasts longer.
Since geese are much larger birds than ducks, they are also the only birds that produce sufficiently large plumes for high-end down products. The outcome is that high-end down products remain highly dependent on goose down fill which is indirectly related to the rise in prices.
Another thing that differentiates duck down from goose down is that duck down might have some odor in it, the reason for this is that, since ducks are smaller and lower than geese, their bellies tend to be in direct contact with the ground. Even though a lot of cleaning and treatment processes are established to remove the majority of the odor, some people with a sensitive sense of smell may be able to detect a slight odor.
Goose down is considered to provide more warmth than duck down, which gives you one of the more reasons to find that most good quality winter comforters or duvets and jackets have this type of down filling. The composition of goose down makes them lighter and fluffier than others, which adds to an airy and soft texture.
Winter products are generally filled with down from either geese or ducks. Since Geese are larger birds than ducks, they are also generally larger, which means they have bigger down clusters. A larger bird from a colder region also means warmer down.
The filaments of Goose down are able to trap more air and provide more insulation. The general rule of thumb is the bigger the down cluster, the warmer the duvet. Given all other factors are equal, a goose-down duvet with more fill say 90 percent will be warmer than the duck-down duvet with the same fill power.
Regardless, of these differences, both products are equally good insulators as they share a very similar structure. Along with that, down is known for being super durable. So if you take proper care of your down-filled products, they are worth every penny and time spent searching for them!!
Down & Feathers Made in Canada by Canadians tend to be superior in quality so it pays to buy locally. Duck down is a more economical option for those who don't want to pay about 50% more for goose down.
Yes, Goose down is considered a more premium grade of down for the reasons listed above. However white duck is a perfect choice if you're on a budget and have a better value in terms of price. Always confirm you're getting all 100% down and no inexpensive feathers.

Take a look at our Artisan White Down Duvet reviews! The ratings do not lie.
The first thing you want to consider when shopping for your duvet is the thread count of the outer shell. Most duvets come with a cotton shell, but what gives you an idea of the actual softness is the thread count. The higher the thread count, the softer and more luxurious the outer shell will feel.
What is a thread count you ask? Good question! The thread count reflects how many pieces of thread are contained within 1 square inch of fabric.
That means that with a higher thread count, you also get a higher quality that lasts longer. A higher thread count also results in a shell that does a better job in protecting the down filling.
We’ve discussed more of the thread count in our Everything You Need to Know About Bedding Thread Count guide.
Next, you'll want to consider what your duvet is actually filled with.
The most popular duvet filling is down or feathers. While feathers are less expensive than pure down, they do not insulate as well.
The next most popular filling is cotton, which is great for warmer climates, but is not as warm as down when sleeping in colder countries. There is also wool filling, which is a great alternative to down.
Bamboo and silk are two very popular materials that are now being used as filling for duvets as well. Remember to look for things like “100%”, “Pure”, “All-Natural” and “Organic” when shopping for duvets to ensure you are being promised the best quality.
Want to find out what is the best fill for your duvet? We’ve made a separate blog about it. Check out our Top Reasons Why Goose Down is the Best Fill for Your Duvet blog!
You may have noticed the term ‘fill power’ or ‘loft rating’ when shopping for duvets. But what does this mean?
Both terms basically mean the measurement of fluffiness or the fill level of your duvet. It measures how much space one ounce of down occupies in your duvet. In other words, it gives you an idea of how stuffed your duvet is! And remember the general rule is, the fluffier the better! The more fill a duvet has, the higher quality it tends to be and the better insulation it provides.
Here’s a general guide you can follow while shopping:
Now do not confuse ‘fill power’ with ‘fill weight’, another term that I am sure you have seen while on the hunt for the perfect duvet.
"Fill weight’ actually represents the total weight of filling within your duvet, generally expressed in ounces. So this is the overall weight of your duvet.
The real trick to finding the perfect duvet is getting the right balance of ‘fill power’ or the fluffiness versus the right balance of ‘fill weight’ a.k.a the overall weight of the down in your duvet.
You need to find that happy medium where you are perfectly tempered, not too hot, and not too cold!
Another item to want to consider when shopping for your duvet is the actual construction.
This is important because however your duvet is constructed reflects how your filling will stay in place and how everything will hold together over time.
Here are the different types of duvet construction you will see and what they mean:

Promising review by Kim W.
“Excellent duvet. Very light but provides a lot of warmth without getting too warm. The squared baffles are also very effective in keeping the down in place. And it's great to support a Canadian product.”
Another popular choice is the White Down Hungarian Duvet. It is another one of Down Under’s most luxurious comforters. It offers soft, fluffy, and gentle comfort.
This duvet is filled in Canada with 550 lofts of white duck down, and the outer shell is made from 100% cotton with a thread count of 289. Unbelievably soft to the touch!
The duvet comes with corner loops in order to easily tie your duvet cover into position. The use of baffled box construction ensures that the filling stays in place and remains fluffy and evenly distributed.
This duvet provides you with all-season comfort. It regulates temperature well and is weighted perfectly. Get yours on Amazon Canada or in the Down Under Marketplace. Don’t forget to check out the reviews!
Another Satisfied Customer Review
“We love our duvet and my husband and I are always joking about buying more so we can have one in every room. We look forward to sleeping with our new duvet because it is so toasty warm and light. We would give it a 10 out of 10!!!!” - Leonard Lipp
Next up is the duvet that is even LIGHTER than our down comforters. That’s right! Lighter than a feather! Introducing the Lightweight Mulberry Silk Filled Duvet. Say you aren’t the biggest fan of down but still are looking for a superbly lightweight duvet.
Well, this one's for you. The filling is made from long strand Mulberry silk threads, which are hypoallergenic. Always a huge bonus! It’s completely washable too!
Silk gives you warmth in the winter but also provides a much lighter and cooler experience in the summer. This makes the duvet perfect for all-season comfort. The shell is also quite soft, made from 300 thread count 100% combed cotton.
You can find this ultra-light duvet on both the Amazon Canada or in the Down Under Marketplace page! Check out our product's review page too about what people are saying about their silk duvet.
Review:
"I have been waking up mornings soaking wet and sweaty. I accepted it that was just going to be my new normal. Read about silk and saw one in Costco. I wreaked our old comforter needed to buy a new one and decided to take a leap and try one. I absolutely LOVE it. It has helped so much that I no longer wake up sweaty, it is just comfortable. Thank you!"

Last but certainly not least is the Australian Wool Washable Duvet. That’s right! Washable! It’s right in the title and everything so you know it’s safe! This is another eco-friendly option if you are someone who doesn’t mind animal products.
No fluffy sheep are harmed in the making of this duvet! It is completely cruelty-free! Promise! The sheep get a haircut twice a year and this hair is processed into wool fibers, to create the filling of this amazingly versatile duvet. It is completely natural and chemical-free!
The shell is made from 100% cotton which makes this blanket very breathable. A cool fact about wool is that it has thermo-regulation, which means it is able to adjust the temperature accordingly inside the blanket based on the surrounding temperatures.
It gets warmer in the winter and cools down in the summer! The definition of all-season comfort. Better yet, wool is also hypoallergenic, dust-resistant, and fire-resistant! What can this duvet not do?! Buy one for yourself! Available on the Canadian and the US marketplace!
Happy customers make us happy. Just look at this review:
"I have had a wool duvet for the last 10 years and loved it. My Husband suffers from asthma, hay fever and eczema so have always avoided down filled duvets. Having recently moved from Australia to the US, I thought woolen duvets would be popular in the store like they are back home in Oz.
Alas, they are not and after much hunting, on the Internet, I came across this duvet. Wow, we definitely were not disappointed in the quality of this product. It is warm without becoming too overheated. It is nice and lofty as well so gives that luxurious look and feel. I know that the concept of a woolen duvet may seem a little odd to some, but I would highly recommend giving it a go as you will not be disappointed."
Now introducing to you our completely plant-based duvet! Bamboo to the rescue. This self-regenerating plant is ultra-strong and completely unharming to the environment. What a perfect material to turn into a fabric!
The shell of the duvet is made from 100% bamboo viscose, which is said to be twice as soft as cotton! Inside, the filling is made from long-strand natural bamboo fibers.
Not only is bamboo a very strong and outlasting fabric, but it also has antibacterial and hypoallergenic qualities. This makes it one of the healthiest blankets on the market! And so eco-friendly!
A duvet that is perfect for those who have bad allergies or are prone to getting sick and for those living a very natural and organic lifestyle. The blanket will also keep you warm in the winter but is lightweight enough to still use in the summer. Get your planet-saving bamboo duvet on Amazon!
Customer Review:
"I sleep very warm as such I don't like chemicals in materials on me while I sleep, this bamboo duvet breathes nicely in the warmer days now and worked great in the winter. It is a bit of a kick in the wallet compared to what some people may want to pay but it's worth it in my opinion 5/5" - Jared
This blanket is an interesting twist on eco-friendly. It can be compared to the Down Under bamboo duvet in that it comes from plant-based and recycled materials. Instead of bamboo, this comforter has a eucalyptus fiber shell, which like bamboo is said to be softer than cotton.
It is filled with 100% recycled materials. The company states that each duvet keeps 50 plastic bottles out of landfills. It also mentions that eucalyptus has hypoallergenic properties much like bamboo.
Though both choices are very eco-friendly, with the Buffy Comforter, though the inner material is recycled, it is still synthetic. This means it will not last as long as some natural fibers can and the quality would diminish a bit faster over time with synthetic materials.
This is why the bamboo option from Down Under is a great alternative, it is still 100% eco-friendly, made completely from plant-based materials, but is also completely natural and organic!
This duvet is comparable to our down duvets, in price and quality. This blanket has a goose-down filling and a 100% Egyptian cotton shell. It features a 750-loft rating, which is a bit better than the Down Under Hungarian Duvet but is no match for the Jasper Hutterite Down Duvet.
Even though both comforters are made with a goose-down filling, Down Under has a slight edge, with its hire loft rating. This means better overall down placement with better thermal properties.
So what is a down alternative? It’s basically a microfibre or another synthetic material that feels and acts very similar to real down. Say you want the feeling of down but not the actual animal product.
Maybe you are allergic to down and feathers. Down alternatives can mimic the feel of a down duvet that you are looking for.
This duvet comes with a microfibre shell, which is said to be very soft but does not beat the softness and quality of cotton or bamboo. This duvet is a bit pricey for a synthetic alternative.
If you are looking for an alternative to down, Down Under has options that give you more bang for your buck and are actually made out of natural fibers, like our bamboo duvet!
This seems to be a popular choice when it comes to wool-fill duvets. Again very similar in quality and materials as to the Down Under Wool Duvet, featuring an Australian Wool filling with a 100% cotton outer shell.
They do seem to be at par in regard to price range as well, however upon looking through Amazon, this brand seems to have limited supply and sizes, which gives Down Under an advantage.
They do claim to be eco-friendly but are not 100% clear on the cruelty-free procedures, which of course cannot give you the assurance you are looking for while shopping online. Be sure to confirm that the processes used for the collection of wool are always humane.
This duvet seems pretty similar on paper to Down Under’s Silk Duvet. It also has a 100% cotton shell with a long-strand mulberry silk filling, but one big advantage to the Down Under Silk Duvet is that it comes in at a lower price range.
When shopping for a silk duvet, the things you are typically focusing on are if they are lightweight, long-lasting, breathable, give you all-season comfort, and are chemical-free. You also want to be sure that the duvet is soft!
The Amazon page for the LilySilk duvet is not clear as to what thread count the outer shell is, but you can feel confident and know what level of softness to expect with Down Under’s 300 thread count cotton shell!
You do get all the same features in both duvets but spend just a little bit less with Down Under! Bring on the savings!
Here we have another down alternative that is also super lightweight. This duvet is made from primarily synthetic materials but comes at a much more affordable price.
If you are not looking to spend too much, then you may like a choice like this but there are significant drawbacks in quality when you do decide to go for something at a lower price range. There is always a compromise.
Though this blanket initially does its job, eventually, over time these synthetic fibers wear and tear, decreasing the effectiveness of the duvet. This would likely happen much more quickly with synthetic fibers than with natural fibers.
You would likely need to buy a new blanket much sooner when paying less as compared to spending a bit more, and the blanket lasting a lot longer. It definitely pays off! With our bamboo and wool duvets, you get natural fibers that are eco-friendly but last much longer than synthetic fibers.
Down Under has some beautiful choices of duvet covers to accompany your new duvet. This helps to keep your bedding looking new and keeps everything clean. Duvet covers are easier to care for and are washable, so you don’t have to stress about getting your pearly white duvet dirty.

Check out our complete guide on why a duvet cover is important!
Also, we’ve listed some important points to keep in mind when buying a cover for your duvet. We will also share with you how to put a cover on your comforter/ duvet!!
It’s 2023 you ‘all, we will remember this time for a long long time, and also would remember spending a lot of time in our room. Whether it is just for now that you are listening to music in your bed, maybe watching Netflix, or even just browsing for a new cover to revamp the look of your room. There are some things you should know before buying a new cover for your comfy, cozy blanket.
Since we are talking about spending time in your room, may I break it to you that we spend about a third of our lives sleeping? Yes….can you believe it!!
Duvet covers can simply be understood as a cover to protect your duvet from dust, stains, and spills. But that’s not it…..duvet cover has a lot of other benefits. Simply put just duvet covers act as the outer layer of protection for your duvet just as pillowcases are for your pillows. The terms duvet and comforters insert are used interchangeably depending on where you live. Both a duvet and comforter are filled with warm materials to provide you comfort through the night and even though a duvet cover has the name duvet in it, it can also be used on your comforter.
Since duvets and comforters are bulky and expensive, it can be hard to clean them on a regular basis, and that is when duvet covers ease you of the hassle of regular cleaning. Since a duvet cover is just an additional layer attached to your duvet, it is easy to remove and clean. Duvet covers are easily cleaned and also easy to store as compared to a whole duvet. A new duvet cover is an easy and inexpensive way to enhance the look of your room. Whether you have a duvet or a comforter you can still use a duvet cover to protect it from getting dirty. Duvet covers are designed to protect your duvets from spills, stains, and dirt while also doubling as a convenient way to change the décor of your room.
Take a look at our Duvet Covers Collection
These covers not only protect your quilt but also can help give your room a fresher new look, as they are easy to change and replace than the whole duvet/ comforter itself. Duvet covers are the perfect accessories for your room. If you get bored, or simply have a new favorite color, all you got to do is buy a new cover; way cheaper than buying a whole new duvet. The duvet cover also allows you to re-furnish your bedroom with the simple shift of a cover. Whether you have a duvet or even a comforter, you can simply get a new cover and give your room a whole new fresh look!! Isn’t that awesome!!
The best thing about duvet covers is that you can just switch covers based on your mood, and decoration of your room. Depending on your age, interest, style, and color of choice, there are millions of choices available when it comes to duvet covers.
A little tip: If your duvet/ comforter is getting old or thinner or even if you notice it has started to pill; all you have to do is get a duvet cover on top. This saves you money and time!!
A well-fitted duvet cover is very important as it might determine if you are able to get a good sleep. This is when you may also want to look at purchasing a duvet cover with insert ties. We have a whole blog on the importance of purchasing a duvet cover with insert ties. I can’t stress out how important it is!!
When buying a duvet cover make sure it is the right size for your duvet or comforter. It is best to measure the length and width of your quilt before making a purchase, otherwise, you would notice that your duvet keeps shifting inside your blanket, which could be bothersome while sleeping.
Duvets covers are easy to care for! Duh, their main purpose is to keep the duvet from getting dirty and to avoid washing the whole bulky thing. So they easily come off from the duvet or comforter. You can simply toss the cover in the washing and put your mind to ease. Do remember, to always check the manufacturer’s label for cleaning instructions for your duvet cover. Imagine dropping breadcrumbs on your white duvet and having to clean the whole thing. Most duvets and comforters are also not to be washed in-home laundry; this is when covers come in handy. As they say:
"It is better to prepare and prevent than it is to repair and repent!!" - Ezra Taft Benson
This is why I love duvets; you can always buy a new cover to match your room. Imagine getting your room painted and being stuck with an old boring color or comforter. YOLO! Live a little and take advantage of having a duvet where you can simply mix and match your cover. They are inexpensive and easy to store, so grab a bunch of you all and switch them up according to your mood.
Let me tell you a little secret: I always put a new cover on my duvet wherever my friends are over and now they think my detergent is great. Nah! I have a bunch of covers and keep switching them up.
There is a whole lot of variety when it comes to duvet covers, whether it is for your baby girl who likes unicorns or your Grandpa whose favorite color is yellow! Or maybe you developed a liking for traditional motifs, you can find a duvet for every personality!!
You can just get a new cover without having to spend so much on getting a new duvet or comforter. You can always take the cover off and simply wash it! I know what’s coming to your mind…..Yes! you can always buy a new colorful cover for it and enhance the look of your room. Isn’t that just great!! I’m already excited!!
Isn’t this great! You can have matching pillowcases, bedsheets, and duvets. Most places sell duvets covers in sets with other bedding materials. Check out this Damask Stripe Duvet Cover Set | 450TC by Down Under Bedding and Mattress.
Maybe you live in a cold country, where summer just comes for 2-3 months, and now you are wondering if there is any other way to use your duvet. Yess! There is! Take your duvet out of the cover and just use the cover as a lightweight sheet for yourself. This saves you the time, money, and space of storing another sheet for the summer months.
A duvet cover could add weight to your duvet which might not be favored by some people. The texture does add a decorative appeal to your duvet but also adds weight. We recommend using duvet covers with sheet-weight fabrics that are both long-lasting and washable.
We have mentioned this quite a few times now!! You may find that your duvet keeps moving inside the cover and could disturb you during your sleep. But the good news coz there is a solution to this! Use duvet ties!
Read our How To Prevent Your Duvet From Moving In The Duvet Cover? blog to get rid of this problem.
Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you! If you have a big king-size duvet, better to call a friend for help.
Another addition to your bedding items means spending more money. Consider yourself warned!
It is not easy to find some specific sizes especially if you have a king-size duvet. Different manufacturers could use different measurements for a king-size duvet. it is always best to measure your duvet before getting a duvet cover.
Take note of these points and it will save you a lot of hassle!!
Even though duvets are designed to protect your duvet and comforter from getting dirty, they double up to add a splash of color to your room. If you are unsure of which duvet cover to buy, we suggest you ask yourself a few questions. Are you a solid color or pattern person? Also, do you get bored easily? If you do then go for a neutral color, something that matches your bedroom. Whether you are interested in softer tones, patterns, or floral designs, you can find your perfect duvet cover at Down Under Bedding and Mattress. Darker colors are perfect for the modern urban room. Whereas colorful duvets with animals and cartoon designs are great for kids.
The best is to mix and match colors according to your liking. Aside from the colors, make sure to get the correct size for your duvet and get a duet cover with insert ties. Also, covers can easily be zipped up or buttoned from the side, this not only helps keep the shape of your duvet intact but also keep the dirt and germs outside for longer.
Hope we made your choice a little easier. Now you can run away with your duvet wherever you would like, just make sure to add a duvet cover.

This luxurious, premium bedding is so soft and comfortable you won’t regret the switch! Make your comfort zone as soft as bamboo! This article will definitely convince you!
The antibacterial properties of bamboo are not tampered with during the manufacturing process which makes bamboo a very clean and hygienic fabric to use in bedding. - Purezone
Looking to buy bamboo bedding?? But wondering if this should be your go-to option or not. Well let me start by saying bamboo bedding is known to be beneficial for your overall health; this fill is not only eco-friendly but also has amazing breathability and durability. Whether you are looking to buy bamboo sheets, bamboo duvets or duvet covers, or even a bamboo fill pillow. They could help enhance your sleeping experience.
Before deciding which bamboo bedding to buy. Have a look at the pros and cons! It’s basically the only way to make a decision - am I right? Who knows maybe you will end up changing all your bedding accessories to bamboo-filled ones. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages you may find when it comes to bamboo bedding.
When shopping around for bedding, the number one priority on everyone’s mind is comfort. I get it! There is nothing more important than being completely and utterly in bliss of comfort when laying in bed or dreaming peacefully. Bamboo bedding is some of the most comfortable bedding you will ever use. It is so soft to the touch and keeps your body temperature regulated all night! Get an awesome sleep every time!
Bamboo is a natural material that is hypoallergenic. Because it is made from plant-based materials, those with allergies to down feathers have a perfect alternative with bamboo bedding.
Bamboo is also dust-resistant and keeps those dust mites away. This is great news for those who are asthmatic or allergic to dust.
No more scaring away your partner with a midnight sneeze attack! Another great feature of bamboo is that it has antibacterial properties and keeps those germs away. Who wants germs hanging around in their bedding? Not me!
Bamboo can grow so easily and quickly on its own without any addition of pesticides or other chemicals which makes it very safe for the environment. Because it grows so rapidly and in such large amounts make it possible to utilize it faster for production while also not overwhelming the resources. Yay! Suitable for the planet AND for you! Winning!!
Believe it or not, bamboo is more durable than most alternative materials. I guess you’re wondering how that works. Well, bamboo fibers are one long continuous strand that stretches across the whole length of the fabric, as opposed to having a bunch of shorter fibers that are interwoven together. This means that bamboo sheets are less likely to rip or wear out than your typical cotton sheets. So even though bamboo bedding tends to be a bit more expensive, it ends up paying off because of how much longer it lasts. I told you bamboo had superpowers!
For those that are hot sleepers, listen up! Bamboo is the type of material that is actually able to regulate body temperature which helps keep you cooler. It is able to wick away moisture as well, so you don’t feel sweaty during the night either. No need to sleep with one leg uncovered to keep cool. Way to go thermo control!!
Bamboo material is able to wick away moisture too while actually still having odor resistance. The antibacterial qualities of the fabric act as a deodorizer which keeps everything smelling fresher and cleaner for longer than with cotton or polyester bedding. Ahh!! Smell that?! It’s your bamboo bedding smelling fresher than ever!
Most of the time, bamboo bedding costs more than traditional bedding. Ouch! I know it hurts my wallet’s feelings too! Alternatives that are combined with synthetic materials can be cheaper, but this does affect the quality. Though bamboo bedding is more expensive, its durability makes it last longer than conventional polyester or cotton fabrics. They stay looking newer for longer and actually last longer over time. You end up not needing to replace your sheets as often, which ends up saving you money in the long run. Cha-ching!
You must take care of your bamboo bedding properly in order to make sure the quality lasts. You cannot throw them in the washer at whatever cycle, cross your fingers, and hope for the best. Yikes! Certain care instructions cannot be ignored such as always washing with COLD water, using a mild soap or detergent, always avoiding HOT water, and never adding in any bleach or fabric softener. This might mean a whole customized washing process just for your bamboo bedding. If the care instructions do mention no washing machine - then avoid it like the plague! You may ruin your perfect bamboo bedding.
Bamboo bedding, unfortunately, wrinkles a lot easier than its competitors. When folded up and stored for a long time or right after they come out of the wash, bamboo sheets can be superbly wrinkly. I know! Something bamboo can’t do perfectly! Never fear! Taking some extra steps can help you avoid wrinkles. You can iron your sheets at a very low temperature to get the wrinkles out or put the sheets on directly after drying to avoid wrinkles altogether. Hang drying or laying out the sheets on a flat surface to dry is a great way to prevent wrinkles as well.
Our bamboo duvet is made from 100% Bamboo viscose and is filled with 100% natural long-strand bamboo fibers, to provide you with the best quality there is! Bamboo is grown easily without pesticides and is able to regenerate completely through its own natural process, making it an eco-friendly option.
How cool is that?! Save the earth while you sleep too!
So you are probably wondering what on earth is viscose!! You may have also heard ‘rayon’ and ‘viscose’ used interchangeably when it comes to bamboo products. Viscose is a fiber that is made by dissolving the cellulose that is present in bamboo, which is then extruded to make fibers. Oh, Science! This is a form of fiber rayon, which is defined as a manufactured and regenerated cellulose fiber. Another term used on the market for this kind of bamboo is ‘regenerated’ bamboo.
The outer shell as well as the fibers within has a natural antibacterial property that is able to protect the bedding from bacteria. Wham! Take that bacteria! You are nothing against the bamboo’s superpowers! This duvet wicks away sweat and other moisture and adjusts to your body temperature to keep you comfortable throughout the entire night! What’s better is how silky soft this duvet is! Such a luxurious fabric! You will wake up feeling like a superstar every morning. Never lose any beauty sleep again! This bedding is perfect for those who have any dust or skin allergies! Ah-choo! No more waking up in a sneezing fit! Get a bedding that finally matches your love for nature. What a comfy Earth we live in! Check out some of our reviews below!
A lot of the bamboo sheets that are on the market are generally bamboo blends. It is best to look for labels and product descriptions that state “100% bamboo” because these products are more environmentally friendly with non-toxic manufacturing processes. Woo-hoo to saving the planet! What’s better, is that 100% bamboo sheets actually feel just as soft as cotton that is a higher thread count. So, 100% bamboo sheets with a 250-thread count are just as soft as cotton sheets with a 400-thread count. The softness really makes it hard to leave my bed, I must be honest!
Though 100% bamboo sheets are a bit more expensive than bamboo blends, the softness and comfort make up for it! You do end up saving some money sticking to 100% bamboo over the higher thread count cotton sheets. Every little bit helps! Try to find brands of bamboo sheets that actually have a lifetime warranty. Brands like Cariloha, though on the expensive side, do come with a lifetime quality guarantee. A larger investment at first, for sure! But it pays off knowing that if anything happens to your sheets, you are guaranteed a replacement for life. Now that’s a deal!

Most duvets have similar tips and tricks when it comes to caring for them, but even still it is very important you do your due diligence and always read the care instructions designated to your product.
Firstly, and most importantly for any duvet, USE A DUVET COVER!! This ensures the maximum longevity of the duvet but will also assist in keeping it clean. When using a duvet cover, all your comforter will need is a day hanging in the sun for 1-3 hours every 3-5 months to air it out. The sun is actually able to dry up all the excess moisture and body oil that is hiding within your comforter. It naturally refreshes your comforter without damage, making it smell fresh and clean and making it feel like new.
Spot cleaning is another thing you need to know with a duvet. No need to wash the entire thing if it's just a small spot of dirt, right? I agree! Let me give you some helpful hints on the best way to spot clean your duvet!
TAH-DA!!!! Magic!
Now, the most important reason to read the care instructions is when it comes to actually washing the entire comforter. Some can be placed in the washing machine, but still have certain instructions that must be followed like always using cold water, and only using the rinse cycle, with no spin cycle at all. Other duvets are not to be put into the washing machine under any circumstance! Ever!!! If this is the case but you are in desperate need to have your duvet cleaned, you will have to bring it in for dry cleaning services. If you cannot air dry your duvet you may put it in the dryer on the COOL and GENTLE cycle. Never wring out or twist your duvet.
“The first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps, and the third year it leaps!” - Bambu Batu
Everyone knows that Egyptian cotton is amazingly soft, but it sure is expensive! Viscose, which is the fiber that is produced from bamboo, is comparable to Egyptian cotton, feeling just as soft but costing much less. This super-soft fabric has another superpower - it is hypoallergenic and antibacterial too! Use bamboo products from your bed to your bath and beyond!
Moisture is everywhere!!! And moisture means mold and bacteria - yuck! Not only is the atmosphere naturally filled with moisture, but to top it off there is body sweat and oils. Bamboo is able to wick away moisture for a much drier and more comfortable sleep than cotton. It is airier and breathable too which keeps you cooler during the night, making you sweat less. Bamboo to the rescue!
The antimicrobial properties in bamboo are called ‘bamboo Kun’. Interesting name, right? I thought so too! Bacteria that are prone to fabrics are repelled by bamboo, and in return, the fabric stays smelling fresher for longer when compared to cotton. One big reason bamboo floor mats are popular in countries where shoes are not typically worn inside is that the bamboo actually keeps things smelling fresh. Though you should still always be washing your bedding once a week, the bamboo guarantees a fresh scent all the way until wash day. You will want to bury your face in them, trust me! I do it all the time.
Bamboo is a hearty plant that is able to grow in many conditions. It is naturally resistant to pathogens and insects and grows without the use of pesticides or fertilizer. Though cotton is naturally sourced, non-organic cotton is normally grown using pesticides and fertilizer. Cotton also requires harvesting and replanting, which creates a more complicated growing process. Bamboo grows about 4 feet a day and only takes 3-4 years from seed to harvesting. Bamboo will yield 10 times more than one acre of cotton. The coolest part is that after the bamboo is harvested, it is able to replenish itself on its own. As long as the roots are left, the bamboo will usually regrow. Now that’s what I call tough!!
Irrigation is not necessary for bamboo plants. They require a third of the amount of the water than cotton does, which makes them that much more eco-friendly. Bamboo utilizes water much more efficiently than most plants, including cotton, and it is actually able to self-sustain. That makes it a very ideal crop for farming because it requires such little maintenance and does not need much to grow. Give it up for Earth’s superhero!
]]>Do you remember the last time you bought a new pillow? Maybe it has been a long time since you bought a pillow or maybe this is your first time, pillow shopping! Or you might be looking for the difference between queen size and standard pillow. Don’t worry, you came to the right place, we have created the perfect guide to end your pillow hunt!
Imagine you are in another country and want to sleep, but you miss your pillow and can’t sleep. Now you are wondering and searching the web for different pillow sizes, dimensions, and fill but you are left confused with the wide variety out there.
We often pay a lot of attention when shopping for a mattress, but not as much when going pillow shopping. Why is it? Your mattress definitely is a big investment, when it comes to choosing the right one for you and your loved one. But when it comes to determining your sleep quality, pillows are equally important. Choosing the right-sized pillow is very important not only for a good night’s sleep but also for your overall health. If you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night with neck pain, back pain, or shoulder problems, your pillow could be a red flag, and high time that you get one that meets your needs.
But which one is right and how to select the perfect pillow size and structure? Hold on…..answers coming in a few scrolls!!
While choosing the right pillow for yourself, it is important to ask yourself whether you like to sleep on a large pillow, or if would you prefer a small one with more volume.
You may notice that some pillows offer more comfort than others because of the nature of the filling inside them. First, let me introduce you to the sizing and dimensions available when buying pillows.
Even though there are various sizes when it comes to the pillow, there is still a standard acceptable size used within the bedding industry to help you in your search for the perfect pillow.
Just like bed sheets, pillowcases also follow the same rules to help provide a more acceptable look.
Downunder Bedding's Standard Sized White Goose Down Pillow is the best option for you. This pillow has a high profile firm support that's perfect for side sleepers. So, if you like to toss and turn while sleeping or have neck or back pain issues, we would recommend you go for a bigger size such as a queen or king-size pillow. But if you simply prefer sleeping on your back, stomach, or on one side throughout the night then this would be the perfect fit for you.
The only downside of this size is that the fill could drift to the ends making it less fluffy over time. We recommend you keep fluffing it up from time to time to maintain its life for longer. Also finding the right-sized pillowcase for this size could be a problem…but do not worry we have a solution for that!
Another advantage of this size is that it can be easily used in a standard or even queen-sized pillow cover. So, you don’t have to worry if you can’t find a standard pillowcase, coz all you got to do is simply take the general/queen-size case and put your standard-sized pillow inside, now you are ready to go! Doesn’t this give you one more reason to love this size even more!!
Queen pillow dimensions are slightly longer than a standard pillow, which provides you with more surface area and comfort for your head. The standard measurements for this in North America are (51 x 76 cm) or 20" x 30" (inches). These pillows are perfect for all kinds of sleepers, side, back, or stomach. Their amazing ultra-soft and fluffy fill provide ultimate comfort throughout the night.
Downunder Bedding's Queen-Sized Goose Down Soft Profile Pillow is the best option for you. This pillow has an extra soft support that's perfect for stomach sleepers. This gives you the extra room helps provide more comfort for people who like to toss and turn throughout the night. They are specifically designed to be the perfect fit for a queen-sized bed if two of them are placed side by side but work well for twin or king-sized beds too.
Tip: Because of them being super popular. Yes, feeling like a queen!! You can find a wide variety of pillow cases, covers, inside fill loft, etc. for this sized pillow.
However, pillows should be bought, keeping in mind your personal preference. Many people prefer the extra length of a queen-sized pillow for their twin or double beds. Did I mention, they fit perfectly well within a standard-sized pillowcase too, depending on the amount of fill inside. Don’t take my word for it, try it out, but be sure to measure!!
Even though they are specifically designed for the extra width of your king or California-sized bedding, but are also a great addition to a queen, twin, or small bed for people who like to sleep with big pillows. Helps provide ample support to your neck and back throughout the night. The king-sized pillows are perfect for people with broad shoulders or people who like to sleep on extra fluffy pillows.
King-sized pillows help provide extra support as compared to your standard or queen pillow. But still many prefer sleeping on queen-sized or standard pillows. In this case, you may want to choose a king-sized pillow for decorative purposes. Check out our King-Sized White Goose Down Pillow.
So, if you prefer sleeping with a small king-sized pillow but want to add a more full, cozy feel to your bedroom, then buy a set of king, queen, and European square pillows. And use your comfy king pillows as an extra headrest or a backrest while sitting on your bed.
The only downside of sleeping with this pillow size is that many people find the extra measurements and material too much to sleep with, in this case, we recommend you could just use it for decorative purposes.
A European pillow also known as a euro pillow or euro sham is a square-shaped pillow. These are most commonly used for décor purposes on beds, sofas, and couches. The traditional measurement for this size is (66 x 66 cm) or 26" x 26" (inches).
Not only are they perfect for accessorizing your bed, but also are great for providing you with back and neck support for watching Netflix or getting some reading done while in bed!!
Did I mention, these pillows can be found in every color and design you could imagine. So, get ready to glam up your room with your favorite Disney character, your best quote (some places also let you print your choice of design on this size of pillow), or even a simple design that you love. Some European pillows can be found as having a design on one side, while just a plain solid color on the other side; this lets you have more choice by switching it up alternatively.
Tip: Be sure to buy a good quality fluffy pillow from a reputed manufacturer otherwise you would find that your euro pillow is getting flat.
You might have an idea about the specifics regarding the pros and cons of pillow sizing standards. Not only do they help you provide a sense of comfort while sleeping but also play an important role in your health. If you are still confused about the wide variety of sizing standards or want to get a better idea, have a look at the list of Q and A’s below:
A standard pillow is the smallest size of a sleeping pillow with measurements of (51 x 76 cm) or 20" x 30" (inches), whereas a queen pillow is slightly longer and often the most common choice when shopping for pillows. Queen-size pillows measure (51 x 76 cm) or 20" x 30" (inches). Some people like the compactness that a standard pillow provides while others like the luxurious feel of a larger size.
Tip: Smaller sizes might save you a few bucks, get for the long run get something that you would provide comfort while sleeping.
Many people mistake a standard pillow for a queen-sized pillow because they appear to be very similar in size. The only difference is that a queen-sized pillow is slightly longer than a standard pillow, which can help provide you with some additional comfort. Another advantage of this size is that you can find a huge variety of pillow covers/ pillowcases and regardless of what size of cover you buy, both these sizes can fit into them.
Queen-sized pillows are usually a little bit longer than regular standard pillows. The ideal queen pillow dimensions followed across North America are (51 x 76 cm) or 20" width x 30" length (inches). Because of their extra length, they are perfect for displaying across your Queen-sized bed or even a double-sized bed.
Ultimately, the decision would be yours. Be sure to ask yourself your purpose and need for the kind of pillow you choose. Whether it is simply for decorative purposes or for sleeping comfortably, also do check your bedding and mattress size when buying the perfect pillow for your needs.
Many people simply buy pillows to match their bedding size, but this should not be the case, it is important to pay attention to your sleeping needs and posture at night. A king-size pillow may not be a good choice for everyone just like standard pillow measurements could be too small for some. If you simply cannot decide the best is to go for somewhere in the middle that is for a queen-sized pillow.
Remember, that sizes could vary across countries and also through different manufacturers, so we recommend you measure or check for specific sizing by each company when shopping for pillows.
Give your room a new look by mixing and matching much of different sizes and pillow covers. I personally love mixing my pillow sizes, but the bigger-sized king, and queen pillows near the back of the headboard of your bed and then lay smaller sizes such as Euro pillows to the front to get a fresh pattern look for your room. Hope you have fun mixing and matching them up.

]]>Sheep wool is being used as a filling for pillows, with some great results. You won’t even need to count sheep with the comfort of a wool pillow. Wool is already used for so many types of products, so why not for your pillow? This article takes you on the journey of why people are turning to a wool pillow instead of any other type of organic pillow. Sheep are truly like the insomnia swat team — keeping you away from the harm of no sleep.
So first, what are the benefits of choosing an organic pillow? Let's review. Well other than the fact that going green is the general life choice you should ALWAYS be choosing… Organic pillows are made with 100% organic materials that are both good for you and good for the environment. Healthy and environmentally friendly. That’s a combo you can’t resist.
Do not hesitate to embrace your inner nature lover. Let’s save our planet! It’s important for the earth and for you!
There are a bunch of different types of organic materials that your pillow can be filled with, the most popular kinds being Cotton, Down, and Wool. Most pillows that are organic come with a 100% cotton shell and 100% organic pillow stuffing.
The best part about organic materials is they do not put as much strain on our environment as synthetically produced materials do. These materials are also completely biodegradable and recyclable — so you can continue to reduce and reuse them! I love being green.
This makes organic pillows the healthiest choice on the market. Whether you like to shop from Costco or Casper for your pillows, make sure you select the best organic pillow you can find. Have a savvy rest while you can.
Not only is this eco-friendly pillow made from organic materials, but it is done so without any harm to animals. Though wool is not vegan, it is still a material that does not put any cute fluffy sheep in harm's way! Shearing the sheep for their wool, typically done twice a year, is just giving the sheep a haircut, which in the summer months is necessary! Imagining the countryside and waking up on the farm after having a refreshing sleep! Just like me, sheep get way too hot in the summer time. I also get a haircut every summer just like the sheep to help keep me cool.
The most interesting fact about wool is that it regulates temperature. What does that mean? It can be both warming and cooling. I know, it seems impossible… How can something be both hot and cold? Well, let me explain. When your body is hotter, the wool is very breathable and prevents any excess sweating through the night, which helps keep you cooler. While on colder nights when your body temperature drops, wool can hold the heat and keep you warm. This organic wool pillow also helps you maintain a lower resting heart rate, ensuring you get a comfortable sleep throughout the night!
Wool lasts longer over time and is more durable and sustainable in comparison to cotton and down filled pillows. Wool has natural anti-microbial properties and is hypoallergenic. While fighting off bacteria, it also prevents mold and mildew growth within the pillow. Those who have severe allergies to down pillows might like the option of a wool filled pillow instead.
Wool is moisture resistant too, wicking away any moisture from the environment or our bodies. Another fun fact about wool is that it is also naturally flame retardant! How about that — comfy and functional! What is even better about wool pillows is that they are washable and washing machine friendly. No need to spend extensive money on getting your pillows dry-cleaned.
Wool pillows can be customized to your desired height and thickness. As seen with most of the top pillows on the market for 2020, adjustability is a huge desirability. Simply add or remove some wool stuffing to achieve the perfect comfort for you.
Are you a side sleeper and prefer your pillow thicker and firmer? No problem! Just add some wool stuffing to the pillow. Or perhaps you are a stomach sleeper… We got you! You probably like a pillow that's thinner and softer. Just remove some pillow stuffing to achieve the pillow you want. And for you back sleepers out there — we know you like it somewhere in between, so you can play around with the stuffing as well until you achieve that perfect pillow!
It is important to remember that wool filled pillows will naturally compress approximately 30-40%, so having adjustability is a must if you want long-lasting comfort. Any stuffing you remove and are not using, you can store it in a plastic Ziploc bag. Our organic wool pillow is naturally sourced and made in Canada. Feels great to shop locally! If you shop on a popular place like amazon, here is our best selling Washable Wool Filled Pillow.
“I just found out it takes 5 sheep to make one wool sweater. I didn’t know they knew how to knit!” - CoolFunnyQuotes
Wool is a strong, flexible, and extremely durable material. Its fibers can bend 20,000 times before breaking, while cotton can only really withstand 3,000 bends before breaking. Wool is clearly the winner here. Because of wool's elasticity, it can hold its shape and last longer than cotton does.
Wool also has better insulation qualities than cotton. Remember those thermoregulation qualities we talked about? Well, against cotton it’s no exception. Wool traps and circulates the heat in air pockets, which help to keep you warmer than with a cotton filling, while also keeping you just as cool in the summer as cotton does. Whatever the temperature, wool adjusts. Ahh, the flexibility! I wish all things were that easy going…
Wool actually absorbs moisture too and helps to wick it away from the skin and our surroundings. This assists in keeping you warm and dry. Another great reason to check out Down Under Washable Organic Wool Pillow. If you are a sweatier sleeper, wool is a great option! Wool still has its insulating properties even when it is wet, which cannot be said for cotton. Once cotton gets wet, it becomes cold and uncomfortable. Ever get stuck in the rain wearing cotton? Then you know that cold and unpleasant feeling. Not only does wool have moisture management, but it also has antimicrobial properties. Keep those germs away!
Wool, as mentioned before, is naturally thermoregulation. This means that if the weather is cold, wool will adjust to keep you warm, and when the temperature becomes hotter, the wool can in turn cool you down. This makes wool great for any kind of sleeper in any kind of weather. No season can outsmart this material! Though down is great at keeping people warm, it really does not accommodate those hotter days. It can be hard to cool down when using a down-filled product.
Wool can wick away sweat and other moisture to keep you feeling dry and comfortable while you sleep. It does not trap the moisture within like down does, but rather releases the moisture back into the atmosphere.
Down, because it traps the moisture within, actually creates a more humid sleeping environment. When down gets wet it tends to clump together which also affects the thermal properties of the product. The moisture getting trapped in down makes it the perfect environment for dust-mites and mold-spores.
Wool is hypoallergenic and antibacterial, which helps to avoid icky things from getting trapped inside. So much healthier! Down does not have hypoallergenic or antibacterial properties, which makes it terrible for those who do have allergies or are prone to getting sick. Down actually traps the dust and dirt within, keeping these unhealthy things inside your bedding. I know — I will never look at my down bedding the same way again, either! Want to know more about wool and down??
Take a look at our Wool vs. Down blog!
Products filled with down tend to require much more care when it comes to cleaning them. Wool filled products are generally machine and hand washable. Though they do require some added care to their wash cycle, they are much easier to care for than down-filled bedding and hold their quality longer even after being washed. The quality of the down filling can become impaired if the proper wash and care instructions are not followed. So finicky!
Wool is one of the most popular choices when it comes to bedding as it is a highly sustainable material that is naturally and rapidly renewable, recyclable, and can also be organically produced. Win-win!! Though down shares some of these same properties, it is not as sustainable as wool.
In regard to, animal welfare, wool, and the processes of producing it are much more humane than with down. As long as you are sure your wool comes from a reputable source, you can be more certain of humane practices. Down on the other hand is typically sourced from birds that are slaughtered for food purposes. More research and delegation are required to ensure the processes used to source the down are humane.
Though these tips are generally universal for all wool pillows, please remember to ALWAYS read the care instructions. Ensure you are following the proper steps to care for your pillow. These are only guidelines and should be compared to your pillow's individualized care instructions first. So, have those ready, and follow along while I give you some useful tips on taking care of wool pillows.
The necessity of a pillow protector and pillowcase being used simultaneously is most apparent when it comes to actually keep the pillow itself clean. Because it is not the best to wash the pillow often, the covers protecting the pillow have to be easily washable.
That being said, wool pillows are technically washable. If you have to wash your pillow, remember to always use mild detergent or detergents that are meant specifically for wool-like Woolite. If you can, try to avoid washing the actual wool stuffing of the pillow. Remove the stuffing first and just wash the shell if possible.
If you feel you need to wash the entire pillow, it is best to leave the filling inside the pillow, making sure the shell is zipped up completely, so none of the stuffing falls out. You can either handwash or machine wash your pillow.
Fill the tub or sink with cold or lukewarm water. Add a minimal amount of mild detergent or specialized wool detergent into the water. You can also add a tablespoon of baking soda if there is any odor you are trying to eliminate.
Push down the pillow into the water until it becomes fully submerged and actually sinks to the bottom of the basin. Very gently swirl and squeeze the pillow. Do not rub together or agitate the pillow too much. Let it soak for approximately 15 minutes.
Drain out all the soapy water and refill with clean water. Swish around the pillow and squeeze out the soap. Repeat this rinsing process until the water is clear. Squeeze out the water from your pillow then wrap it in a dry towel to help squeeze out any excess water.
Fill the machine with cold or lukewarm water, then turn it off. Add a small amount of wool detergent or mild detergent to the water. Again, if you have any excess odor you are wanting to get rid of, you can add a tablespoon of baking soda. Submerge the pillow into the water, then add a bath towel to balance out the load. Put it on the gentlest cycle possible OR only use the rinse cycle and swish the pillow around using your hands to help wash the pillow, while also giving the pillow a chance to soak for at least 15 minutes. Get the best luxurious organic wool pillow here!
It is likely best to remove the filling and just throw the shell in the dryer. Layout the filling on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area. If you have to dry the filling outside — remember to somehow secure it so that it does not blow away. You’ll have your neighbors thinking snow came early! I suggest one of those netted laundry bags or large pieces of cheesecloth. Wool can take up to 24 hours to dry. It is best to pull apart the larger clumps to allow for a faster drying process. Replace the filling back into the cotton shell once everything has dried. You can use a dryer to fluff your pillow, but only after the pillow is completely dry. Read on to find out how!
We all want that fluffy pillow. So, To keep your pillow fluffy, leave it out in the sun for a few hours on a dry day or pop your pillow into the dryer for 10 minutes with a couple of tennis or dryer balls on low heat or the “air only” setting. Try to fluff your pillows once a month to help prevent any sort of odor and keep your pillow looking and feeling newer.
Another way to fluff your wool pillow is by steaming it. This also helps to sanitize your pillow. You can use a designated fabric steamer or a large pot of boiling water with a steaming basket inside. Place handfuls of the wool filling into the steaming basket for no more than 2 minutes and then remove it. Repeat this process with all the wool fillings. Allow the wool to air dry, then replace the wool back into the shell. Voilà! So fresh! So clean!
So, there is a pillowcase, which is that soft fabric that goes on the surface of your pillow, and that you lay directly on top of. This we all know… But is this really the only and best protection for your pillow? It is not! I am here to tell you about a pillow cover, which is this nifty thing that goes between your pillowcase, and your actual pillow. That’s right, a whole extra layer of protection! Though pillowcases protect your pillow in some small ways, they are mostly for comfort and decorative purposes.
Pillow covers are also known as pillow protectors and actually assist in keeping away dust mites, stains, and moisture, and prevent wear and tear. No matter what kind of pillow you use, a pillow cover can come in handy. It helps keep your pillows cleaner, which means you do not need to wash them as often. When using pillowcases and pillow protectors together, you do not need to wash your pillow protector more than once a month either!
Do remember however to change the actual pillowcase you are laying on once a week to ensure proper hygiene and to make sure the pillow and pillow protector is also staying as clean as can be.
Pillow covers help to further prevent allergens from attaching themselves to your pillow. Not only does a pillow protector help keep your pillow intact and help it last longer, but it also keeps your pillow fluffy, preventing the heavy buildup of any excess body oil or dirt. Pillow covers can be made from a variety of materials, and generally come with easy, breezy zipper closure.
When buying your pillow protector, here are some things you might want to consider. You want the pillow cover to be the proper size. It should fit the pillow snugly without bunching up. The zipper closure should be easy to close fully without snagging the pillow. Pillow protectors generally come in standard, queen, king, and euro sizing. Always be sure to view the specific dimensions of the pillow protector and compare it to the pillow you are shopping for.
Pillow protectors come with a number of more specialized features; in case you are searching for something more specific. Some of these features include cooling, being waterproof, bed-bug resistance, and being hypoallergenic. Moreover, they come in several fabrics too. Try to find pillow covers that are made from organic materials such as bamboo, wool, or cotton to keep that healthy trend going!
You want a pillow protector that is easy to slip off the pillow and also one that is easy to wash. You want to avoid ending up with a cover that is harder to take care of than your actual pillow. Remember to always use protection! Pillow Protection, that is.
]]>What makes my duvet cover so special? There are so many hidden facts you never realized this sheet of cotton might have. Keep reading! We hope to not leave you disappointed by the end of the article!
If you here because you are planning to buy a new duvet cover in the near future, I have some fun, yet important tips to share with you!
Imagine it’s a Sunday morning, sleeping peacefully in your bed, listening to country music! Or any other genre you like and then you dream about having pancakes Au Lit (in bed)! The nightmare of ruining your new bedding stresses you out. Worry not! If you have a duvet comforter cover then all you have to do is toss it in the washer! Ta-da! It’s sparkly clean like before.
In this article, we hope to give you an overview of why you need a duvet cover and what to look for when shopping for one.
A duvet cover is to a duvet as a pillowcase is to a pillow.
- Elledecor
A duvet cover acts as a layer of protection for your duvet comforter, to put it simply it protects your duvet comforter from dust, stains, and spills. Whether you are looking for a duvet cover in Canada or in another country, buying it from Homesense, Ikea, or Walmart; duvet covers should help provide the same sense of comfort to your bedding choice.
According to the experts at facts.net
"Duvet Covers are functioning much like a pillowcase, duvet covers are a duvet’s protective, removable coat. Originating from Europe, the combination of duvets and its covers were designed for optimal thermal insulation and convenience. Thanks to these duvet sets, homeowners are now granted the luxury of prepping their beds using a single covering instead of a combination of sheets, blankets, and quilts.
What’s more, these covers are cost and time efficient, enabling homeowners to skip the complicated and expensive drycleaning processes of traditional duvets and comforters. These covers are not only easy to remove and clean, but also offer the opportunity to customize the look of your bed and room without having to completely redecorate."
Even though people opt for duvet covers because of their popularity, there are so many reasons to be amazed; starting with the variety of options and ease of comfort bought by having a duvet cover on your precious quilt. The duvet also known as an insert can be filled with any kind of fill such as down, wool, synthetic, or even feathers.
Duvets covers as you know are easily machine washable, and usually inexpensive (compared to taking your duvet to the dry cleaners every time you drop something!) This saves you money and the hassle of washing your duvet every time it gets dirty!
Did I mention…..this is also one of the cheapest ways to change the look of your room? If you get bored, all you have to do is get a new cover and voila you have a super new enhanced look!
P.S. I have growing kids and my 6-year-old used to love Barney before she watched a show with flying horses…Yes, I am referring to Unicorns! And now she wanted a new room. Buying a new duvet cover with unicorns made her and my pocket happy!!
As you are familiar duvets and comforters can be very bulky and expensive, making it hard to clean them on a regular basis which is why duvet covers come to the rescue. A duvet cover is a simple addition to your duvet comforter but has a ton of benefits!
Are you still up at 3 a.m. and now that you have made up your mind on the perfect design for your duvet cover…..your mind wanders off to the thought of What is the coolest duvet cover material?
Choosing the right fabric for your duvet can make all the difference, consider this as important as selecting the right duvet fill- you may want to choose one this is breathable, washable and also comfortable at the same time. Cotton would be your go-to option here!
Even though you might find a variety of covers made from other materials, cotton takes the lead on being the best so far. The cotton fabric makes for a more breathable and popular option.
Natural and other organic cotton fibers generally contain lesser chemicals and allergens which makes them an ideal option for your duvet covers. You may also want to wash your new cover once you receive it, if you want to get rid of any excess chemical scents or if you have sensitive skin.
Don’t forget to check the thread count of your duvet cover. Egyptian cotton is known for having the highest thread which makes them the best and softest material for the fabric of your duvet cover. But you could also consider Pima and Supima cotton for your duvet cover materials. The higher the thread count the better the look of your cotton cover, if you want that hotel finish then go for a cotton cover with the highest thread count.
Even though many people do prefer using 100% cotton fabric because of its softer feel, you may want to keep in mind that it also is more prone to wrinkles. You could also look at flannel or microfiber for regions with colder climates. Also, be aware that "microfiber" is usually 100% polyester and it tends to pill after repeated washings.
If you need more info on thread count, they mean and How To Prevent Your Duvet From Moving Inside the Duvet Cover, have a look at our duvet blog.
Duvet covers help keep your duvet comforter insert clean for longer, avoiding you to wash it very often. A duvet cover is basically a giant pillowcase for your duvet and comes in one of the two closure options; buttons and zippers.
There are a lot of debates around zipper vs. button closure. Is having buttons better or do you prefer an invisible zipper? What’s the answer?
A button closure helps provide an enticing physical appearance to your duvet cover. But as you may be familiar, it could take longer to close each and every button, sometimes people tend to miss one or more buttons and it gets matched up with the wrong up; till you realize and have to start all over again. Sound tiring!! Just a heads up, individual buttons could also keep popping open easily; especially if you toss and turn or kick your duvet a lot at night.
Zziiipppp……..As for zipper closure- it easily seals your duvet comforter up, which speeds up the whole process. All you have to do is the duvet inside the comforter; then find the zipper and simply drag it to the closing. Zipper closures are the most popular among the elderly, and also all the people who don’t have enough patience to find each button. The only drawback of a zipper closure is that it could appear to be invisible; could take a little time to find your zipper side. Zipper options are also considered to be one of the most reliable and modern options when compared to button closures.
As for my personal preference, I would look for a duvet comforter cover with a zipper closure over a button closure because I feel that zippers tend to be more durable over buttons that tend to fall off after repeated washings similar to dress shirts.
One of the most popular questions that people ask us is should I wash my duvet cover inside out? Here’s what we recommend!
When washing your duvet or comforter cover it is always recommended that you turn it inside out for best results. Take note to always check the label for the manufacturer’s instructions on washing your duvet cover as well as a duvet. Some comforter covers may not be washed or might need a commercial-sized washing machine.
As you might be wrestling to get your duvet in the cover, let me tell you to take a deep breath and let me guide you through the process. Simply lay the duvet flat on your mattress and put it inside out with the duvet cover opening at the bottom. Now just reach into your cover and find the corners at the top of the cover with each hand. And grab the corresponding corners from each side, match them with the respective corners of your duvet and it’s done.
If you are still confused, don’t stress about this, this process is easy. Take a look at our video about this one below.
Do you often find it a hassle to stuff your large bulky duvet comforter into a duvet cover? Or maybe you are wondering what the loops sticking out of the corners of your duvet comforter means. They are referred to as duvet ties, they help keep your duvet insert in place; that is preventing your comforter from shifting around.
Even though many duvet covers come with duvet ties- and duvets with duvet loops- if you do not have one or either of those, then do not worry. You can easily install them on your duvet or duvet cover. Some people try to keep the duvet in place by using safety pins; this might work for a while, but could also damage and tear your duvet. Just a warning!!
Look for a duvet comforter cover with corner ties or tabs to help prevent shifting of the insert inside of the cover since sizes can be slightly different. Yes, it does require a tad bit extra effort and patience, sometimes you might even need another helping hand. But why not take this pain away and buy a cover with insert ties.
Your comfy duvet insert when serves it’s purpose during winters can take some rest in summers. This is when you can have your duvet cover to do some multitasking! Yes, you can simply use it as a flat sheet or top sheet instead of purchasing another sheet for summer.
Think about it this way, a duvet cover is basically two flat sheets sewn together to form a covering for your warm expensive blanket, so you can easily use the same criteria and use it as a flat sheet or even a top sheet if you’d like.
If you are using your duvet comforter with a duvet cover throughout the year, and then you need to switch to something cooler during the summer, all you have to do is use the cover as is.
Simply take the warm duvet out and pack it away for the summer months! Now you are left with the cover. Yaay! No need to find extra space to store the cover, as now you can simply use this for the time being. Use it as a to sheet or if you prefer- can also be used as a flat sheet or bedspread.
Now you won’t have to part ways with your favorite cute designed cover- saves you time, money, and effort from buying another matching sheet for the summertime.
Doesn’t this just save so much time and space! I bet you never even thought about this. Am I right??
“If you choose not to use the top sheet, you can consider your duvet cover the equivalent of a top sheet, and it should similarly be cleaned every one to two weeks to maintain cleanliness,” says Chapin. – Instyle
Saves you a tad bit of effort from washing your duvet comforter every time it gets dirty.
Just like your sheets and pillowcases, this giant pillowcase (pun intended!) also known as a duvet cover can simply be tossed in your washing machine. If you do have kids or lets at home, you might want to consider washing your duvet cover as often as your wash your bedsheets, or even every two weeks.
But again- make sure your duvet cover is machine washable. Always check the manufacturer’s label for wash and care instructions. Some duvet covers might not have great quality fabrics or stitching and could tear apart, or you might find that the color is fading as you wash it often. This is when you may want to have a look at it before tossing it in the washer. Always check for rips and tear, and try to sew them before washing.
Also, before you leave! Let me remind you again to check if your duvet cover is machine washable or not!! Oh Gosh! You do not want to spend a hefty amount every time at the dry cleaners just to keep your cover clean, do you?
Regardless of what you call your warm quilt; a duvet or a comforter, duvet covers can be used on both. It is recommended that you use a duvet cover to protect the life of your blanket.
Hope you sleep fresh!!
]]>When shopping for bedding you might have come across the term thread count. And then all the other questions surrounding thread count come to your mind!!
Looking for sheets with more thread count? But wondering does it really make a difference if the thread count is higher. What is the difference between higher vs. lower thread count? Why are sheets with more thread count so expensive?
Don’t worry you have come to the right place take a deep breath!! No need to look elsewhere for answers because we have compiled a list of all your questions here.
We understand that thread counts can be confusing as they may appear as a technical term for some. There are also a lot of misconceptions associated with thread count; the higher the thread count means a more luxurious sheet. But let me tell you it’s not always the thread count that matters! There are many factors that contribute to making great linens such as softness, comfort, and texture.
Thread count can be understood as the number of threads per square inch of fabric to help consumers gauge the sense of the quality on a purchase. Thread counts in linens can range from 100 to 12,000. This number is technically based on the number of threads being woven in a vertical and horizontal form, which looks like small squares as seen from a microscope. Extra threads can be woven into the linen weft in order to increase the thread count. Even though thread counts matter, they should not be the only thing you depend on when buying a sheet. Consider looking at material, weave, and ply.
A high thread count should not be your only reliable factor to decide the quality of your sheets! Rather you should look at the quality of fiber, the number of plies, and also the weave of yarns to select the best ones.
Keep reading to get a better understanding of what each of those means. “the main idea should be that the bedding feels soft and comfortable against your skin”
However, keep in mind higher thread count doesn’t necessarily mean a fabric will feel luxurious, soft, or ultra-soft or even super smooth. There are many other variables you should keep in mind, which can make your fabric look more appealing such as fiber quality, yarn size, type of weave, and also the finish.
When it comes to bedsheet materials, there are lots of choices such as cotton, silk, jersey, flannel, organic cotton, polyester, wool, and microfiber. Let’s not get into specifics for each material just yet, but for now, just focus on cotton as it plays a huge role in understanding thread count.
Cotton, as you may know, has a natural breathable ability and is also one of the most picked sheet options. Cotton is made from a variety of fibers such as long-staple, short-staple as well as an extra-long staples. This helps classifies the different lengths of cotton plants and also plays a huge role in distinguishing the quality, strength, and smoothness of cotton. Short staples are the most common for everyday clothing use (for example- jeans), yet the lowest quality of cotton also known as the Upland cotton. Most fabrics made from this fiber are very low maintenance. With the increase in the length of the staple, the quality also increases as they become more durable and even softer over time. The extra-long and long fibers are the best choices for bedding items.
Whether it is for your bedding or your clothes, it is important to understand the types of cotton used available, to gain a better understanding of your clothing materials. There are three main types of cotton available:
Fiber quality is important for your bedding’s softness, weight and durability, find long stable combed cotton yarns make for softer stronger sheets
Staple can be understood as the length of the cotton fiber that creates stronger and finer yarns. With thread size matters, yarn size for sheets ranges from 40-100, depending on the fabric. Yarn can be single or multiple plies, they are twisted together.
The way the fabric is woven also plays a huge part in high-quality bedding thread; the thread count ranged up to 12,000. However, to reach that number of more than 400, multiple-ply yarns are inserted into the weaving process, to add to the bedding’s strength and durability. Depending on the weight of the fiber this could result in heavier and less subtle fabric. So higher thread count alone may not give up the feel you are looking for, after that many other processes are put in place such as using various techniques, to control shrinking, improve lustrously and add dye for color, to give you the perfect finest quality bedding.
Over the last few years, many brands have been able to manipulate the manufacturing process to cause confusion with double & triple-ply fabrics. Linens thread count comes down to the type of fiber used for the bedding and not necessarily the amount of it being used.
A cheap material with thread counts over 1,500 won't feel as good as one made with good quality Egyptian or Pima thread with an honest thread count of 250. That's why you might see a 1200 thread count sheet set for $30 which is really usually made of microfiber of 100% polyester.
On the other hand, you might find pure combed cotton Egyptian sheets at a lower 300 thread count weave for double or triple the price but comparing the 2 products is misleading. These inflated thread counts bedding are made of inferior quality and not built to last or have much comfort. However, if you're shopping on a budget this may be what you need.
One of the most common ways the manufacturer’s expanding thread count is by using multiple yarns that are twisted together or even by counting each strand of yarn as separate threads. The multiple-yarn threads are not as durable as single- or two-ply threads. Another way industries increase thread count is by using low-quality fabrics with thinner threads.
A good quality luxurious soft sheet would have stronger thicker strands of threads which makes it more durable. When a material has denser strands, fewer of those strands are able to fit in one square inch, resulting in a lower number. It is better to choose a high-quality fabric with a lower thread count than buy something which is less durable but has a high thread count.
Keep in mind, low thread count does not mean low-quality sheets, there are some sheets out there with a thread count of 200; which have a very nice soft touch and luxurious finish; that it might feel like they have a higher thread count. The ideal sheet would have a thread count between the 300 – 400 range.
"Thread count matters, but the highest does not always mean the best!"
Over the years thread count has just become a fancy word for quoting the quality of your sheets. The main idea however remains the same the finer the thread you can weave the softer the fabric will be.
In the past, thread count was used as a measure of quality; the higher the TC the better the quality of the material. However, it should not be the only factor for your linens anymore. Higher thread counts can surely make for better sheets, but the quality of the fabric also plays a huge role. Keep in mind, longer fibers, make for better stronger, and smoother yarns. A sheet with a lower thread count but a better quality fabric could feel softer even after many washes as compared to a sheet with a higher thread count yet lower-quality fabric.
This step refers to the quality of the weaving process of your sheet. Cotton is regarded as the best fabric for sheets because of its natural ability to be breathable and long-lasting. Always check the ply of your sheets- are they multiple-ply? Or single/ 2- ply? Sheets with one-ply and 2 ply options are considered to be a better choice for linens. The longer the fibers, the more easily they can be spun into smoother, stronger, finer yarn or thread.
Keep in mind many manufacturers use chemical-based polishes to give your sheet a shiner and softer look. The ideal sheet should look and feel better with each wash and not the other way around. The finishing touch is one of the last steps taken when your linens are designed as they help add softness, texture, and stability to your fabric.
This is one of the most important factors when selecting your perfect bed sheet. Always ask yourself if buying in person- does it feel soft? The texture that you feel against your skin could tell you a lot about the sheet.
What’s all the hype with higher thread counts!!
It may be an easy concept to understand but does not always matter. Thread count sometimes has very little to do with the quality of the sheet. Many textiles are sprayed with silicone which makes them softer for a while but washes off with time.
When looking for a good quality bedding sheet, do check the price, sometimes it can be an indicator of a good quality sheet. Other things you may want to keep in mind are long-staple and extra-long-staple, as they are softer and more durable. A good quality sheet can easily last 10 years or more.
A little tip: honestly good quality sheets should not have a thread count over 1000. This is when you should be careful.
Ultimately the final decision is yours to make, but remember if you have kids or pets are home you may want to consider buying washable sheets made from cotton materials or if you are looking for something more luxurious you may want to have a look at silk linens.

Sleep tight! XOXO
]]>Ooops……have you ever had a lovely breakfast in bed but dropped some crumbs or juice on your new sheets? And now, wondering if you can wash your down/ comforter in the washing machine at home or do you have to take it to the dry cleaners? Or is it just that long since you’ve procrastinated washing your duvet and now that you finally have time, you’re wondering how to wash it. Lastly, is it something you can even do at home??
Hold on tight!! We made the perfect list to guide you through the step-by-step process of washing it and furthermore answered all the questions you might have about your duvet/ comforter.
While there may not be a simple yes or no answer to washing your duvet/comforter. The answer is that — it really depends. Check the type of fill your duvet has; since many can be washed yet for others you may need to focus on the specified washing instructions. The best way to figure that out would be to check the type of fill and the manufacturer’s instructions.
This is one of the most important questions and the first that would come to mind as soon as you think of washing your duvet/ comforter. Getting it professionally done by the dry cleaners might cost you a little but would prove to be easy and provide you with ease of mind.
Taking it to the dry cleaners means getting it washed in a commercial-sized washing machine, that gives your duvet ample space to move around. They also have huge dryers and can adjust the temperature to the right amount without harming your down-filled feathers.
The only reason that could hold you back from getting it professionally cleaned should be the chemicals they use. Even though dry-cleaning helps prevent your duvet from shrinking, it could absorb certain chemicals which are not good for your health.
The next best, time efficient, and budget friendly option is to simply toss your duvet/ comforter in the washing machine at home. But the big question here is that can it be treated like regular laundry?? If you have a full-sized laundry machine then the answer is Yes, you may wash it at home. Nevertheless, if you do not have a large washing machine then head to a commercial wash site. They usually have washing machines three times the size of the ones we have at home and can wash a huge duvet easily.
Before you take your duvet or comforter to the laundry or laundromat make sure to check the tags for the manufacturer’s instructions about washing requirements and precautions. It is important that you follow the instructions on the label as some fabrics may state to avoid certain detergents and chemicals. It is important to always check for instructions pertaining to washing; that is if the duvet can be washed in your washing machine or do you need to take it for dry-cleaning.
Depending on the size of your duvet/ comforter you may want to take it for professional cleaning, most dry cleaners clean duvets for a fraction of the price…..nothing compared to the ease of mind.
After you are confident about the washing technique for your duvet you should check for any rips and slits on the comforter or duvet. Improper cleaning or other any small mishaps could cause your duvet to rip. This would help prevent the fill from getting out of the quilt. Be sure to sew and repair any mishaps you may find to avoid getting your blanket from getting thin due to leaky fills.
Keeping in mind the guidelines from your duvets tag; the first step should be to spot-clean your comforter with the right stain remover. This would make it easier to get rid of stains. After this, you should let your comforter/ duvet soak for a while.
Even though it may be advisable to use bleach for duvets and comforters in general. Let me warn you that bleach can be hard on cotton and down feathers, even though it helps get rid of dust mites. The best way would be to check the label for the manufacturer’s instructions.
Be careful if using bleach……I would advise you to check the label first for this!!
While washing your duvet/ comforter in the washing machine, it is always advisable to wash it in a gentle/ delicate cycle and run it twice to ensure that it is rinsed properly. You may notice that your down comforter has gotten flat after washing it in the machine…..don’t worry, it’s normal…..wait till it gets dried up.
Tip: you could place a rubber/ tennis ball (or even a bunch of coins tightly wrapped in a sock) inside a clean sock in the machine with your duvet. This helps your down duvet from knotting up.
Use the tennis ball sock tip given above even for the dryer, as it helps to maintain proper fluffiness in your blanket. It is advisable to set your dryer on the lowest heating possible and also to remove and shift your blanket every half an hour- this would help plump it up. You should also let your blanket dry in the air for a while to check for any damp spots before putting on a duvet cover. Mildew could even grow in your quilt, so it is very important to thoroughly dry it.
If you have a duvet, you may want to wash the duvet cover more often, say whenever you change your bed sheet. As for a comforter, you should consider adding a duvet cover to it, to prevent it from getting dirty every so often.
The nature of stuffing inside the duvet determines whether you can wash it or not. It is always recommended to check the label for care instructions for your bedding items. We understand that you may not wash your down duvet as often because of its bulkiness. And we suggest your regularly wash your duvet cover for the best longer protection against dust mites and germs to your duvet/ comforter.
We recommend washing it more than one to two times a year. When it comes to cleaning your down duvet, you have two options; dry-cleaning and machine washing. Dry cleaning uses chemicals that get absorbed in your down fibers, such as carcinogen; which tends to stay in your down feathers for a while and leave a residue that you may breathe-, not a healthy arrangement.
We would suggest you use a laundromat instead of home laundry, this is because of its size. Laundromats are usually three times the size of a household machine and provide the duvet/ comforter with ample space to move during the wash cycle.
Pay attention here….this is important and you should follow this with any type of duvet.
When you remove the duvet from the duvet cover, be sure to check the condition duvet for any wears and tears, duvets do wear out with time and this is when you should get your sewing kit out. But first hold it your duvet against the light to properly check for any mishaps, or areas that might be void of down. If you find too many areas void of down filling…..then you might want to consider replacing it for a new one.
Remove the duvet every 30 minutes or so and shake it up the long side (this would help prevent fluffs and clumps to cluster on one side). Keep repeating the process till your down duvet is completely dry. Avoid direct sunlight if you plan to dry it outside. It is advisable to let it in the air for a while but not dry it under the sun, and never use line drying due to the risk of dampness and clumps forming. Always let it cool for a while after taking it out of the dryer and putting a cover on!
Over the years, your duvet gathers dirt, stains, spills, and germs. If you have pets and small kids at home, you may need to wash it more often than not. In case you have a comforter; you should consider adding a layer of protection such as a duvet cover it to retain its life span and protect it from dust mites.
According to Architecturaldigest:
"Your quilt, comforter, or duvet can harbor allergens such as dust mites that ruin that good night’s sleep, so it’s important to know how to wash a comforter the right way. Washing comforters two to three times per year will keep your bed fresh and clean (and your allergies at bay)".
This stresses the importance of hygiene in the preservation of your duvet and as well to your health
Wool duvets should not be washed since wool is not conducive to washing in its own form. The best way to figure it out would be to check the label for special permissions for wool washable duvets. Washable wool is processed specially, allowing them to be chemical-free and ready to use; that is why it is advisable to avoid dry cleaning solvents. However, it is important to remember that wool being a natural fiber must be dealt with extra care so that it can retain its original shape and temperature-regulating qualities. Just like this Down Under Bedding’s Australian Wool Duvet that is machine washable in a Commercial size machine. Do not wash at home.
Silk has a natural ability to be susceptible to bacteria, which means it does not require cleaning as often as others filled duvets. You could always start with spot cleaning and if needed take it for professional cleaning. Some silk duvets may be machine washable, check labels to be sure. It depends on the brand and quality of fabric and silk used in your duvet. An example of this is Down Under Light Weight Mulberry Silk Duvet Comforter is machine washable in a Commercial size machine.
Do not wash at home.
Let me share a little personal tip with you.
I have washed my down duvet many times at home and even though it comes out flat and gets me scared every time, later it fluffs up. This is only for my down duvet…..only do this if you are fine risking it.
I would remind you again to always check the label for instructions. A wool duvet cannot be washed at home, but there are also come down duvets that can easily be washed at home.
Down Under Bedding has washable duvet products that you can check to explore your options. If you have small kids at home or even pets, then buying a washable duvet is highly recommended.
Regardless, one of the best things you can do to keep your duvet from looking like new is to fluff it up every time you make your bed, this would help redistribute the down and also your provide constant airflow to the down feathers inside.
]]>Whether you are shopping for the first time for bedding items or have simply forgotten the size of your bed. Look no further, we have compiled a complete guide to all your bedding needs in one place.
We understand it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the variety of sizes and options available for bedding items and get confused about how to match bedding sizes and bedsheet sizes with the many mattresses and bed dimensions there are.
Here you will find a detailed guide to the sizing options (dimensions) available, how to measure your bedding size, why is it important, and also how to match it with your bedroom style.
The basis for understanding your bedding sizes should start with looking at the size of your mattress. The sizes below are the ones we use at Down Under Bedding and mattress, but should not be the basis for your mattress size. It is always best to measure your bed/ mattress before making a bedding purchase.
We hear you- It is even more confusing if you are from another country and have different sizes for your bedding. So, let’s understand the different bedding sizes available at Down Under Bedding and Mattress
A twin or sometimes also referred to as single bedding size, has ideal dimensions of 39″ x 75″ (inches) – 99 cm x 190.5 cm (centimeters). This size of mattress is perfect for kids, or single sleepers, even though most adults find this size small. Twin beds work best for a small kid’s room/ small guest room/ den, and even for odd-shaped spaces.
This twin extra long is a popular selling item for growing kids and solo sleepers as it is longer than the single-sized option, the size available for this is 39" x 80" (inches) — 99 cm x 203 cm(centimeters). Even though this size does not offer extra width than the single/ twin, it does have extra leg space for tall sleepers. This makes it perfect for dorm rooms and for growing kids' bedrooms.
This mattress with size 54″ x 75″ (inches) – 137 cm x 190.5 cm (centimeters), offers a good conciliation between extra long twin and the queen size. This size turns out to be a good feasible option for single sleepers as it offers a good length and width space. Best choice for small apartments, guest bedrooms, and dorm rooms.
The queen-size bedding mattress is the most popular bed size among couples. With dimensions 60″ x 80″ (inches) – 152.5 cm x 203 cm (centimeters), this mattress offers ample space for two adults to sleep comfortably throughout the night.
Did I mention……they are the most adaptable sizes out there? Whether you are a single sleeper or have to share your bed, this size is perfect for everyone. They are the most popular sizes out there which also means that you can find super cool accessories such as duvet covers, fitted bedsheets, and comforters in this size….which too is within your price range.
This one is my favorite……as you may have guessed by the name “King”! This size offers the most luxurious amount of space. With dimensions, 76″ x 80″ (inches) – 193 cm x 203 cm (centimeters) this size is large enough to share your beds with kids or pets. Even though it may be bulky and heavy to move around, it is worth it when you get to sleep on it like a king!
The most simple and effective way to measure your bed size is by using a measuring tape to determine the height, length, and width of your bedding (for when you are buying a mattress). While shopping for a bedsheet, duvet, comforter, or coverlet; you may want to look at the height, length, width, and thickness of your mattress. Keep reading to get a better understanding!
Take a look at some ways you can make sure you purchase the right-sized duvet for your bed. Here at Down Under Bedding and Mattress, we understand it’s easy to get confused with the variety of bedding options available, and that is why we have created the perfect guide for you. Take a look at this chart to get a better understanding:
Perhaps the most popular size is the elegant queen-size bed/ mattress. This is because of many reasons:
Firstly, they are considered the standard size in almost all places be it hotel rooms, apartments, or even in your home bedroom. They are perfect for single sleepers, those sleeping with a partner, or even those sharing it with your small kid. Since this is the most ideal size of bedding available out there, means there's more variety. You can find this in every type, price range, color, and design. Before I forget……it is easy to transport and shift rather than your king-size mattress. It also strikes a middle ground in terms of economical options. But don’t take our word for it……it is best that you do your research to decide the best option for you.
Buying the right-sized duvet/ comforter can be challenging, because different manufacturers might offer different specifications when it comes to bedding items. Even though standard sizes might offer a starting point for selecting a duvet for your bedding, you should always check the measurements to be precise. Choosing the right-sized duvet to top your mattress can be a challenge when manufacturers often confuse the sizing standards. Or you might find that the mattress sizes differ from one country to another. So, sizes are also particular to the company’s sizing standards. The best way is to always measure before buying.
Keep in mind that you should always keep a measuring tape handy when buying bed-topping accessories.
Mattresses of the same name could vary in size, even by a few inches; depending on the country. Moreover, keep in mind that within each category, comforters can come in a range of lengths and widths, so pay attention to the thickness of your mattress. If your mattress is on the thick side, you should look for a duvet/ comforter in the top range of dimension sizes, or maybe even consider getting a bigger size. For example, if you have a queen-size bed and consider getting a king-size duvet- it could work and might also be a good idea as it would give you enough space for tucking your duvet in your bed for a neat look.
Could also save you the hassle of fighting for a warm blanket through the night! 😉
On the other hand, a larger king-sized duvet could potentially fall closer to the floor as it would not be a good fit for a queen-sized bed.
Choosing the right-sized comforter can be a challenge, especially when manufacturers tend to label them as a good fit for a full-sized queen bed. This is why it is always best to check for measurements!
It is fine for your duvet to be slightly oversized, especially if it is on the puffier side; but keep in mind that since these comforters offer more length and width space, it may tend to reach the floor and not look very appealing. You may risk going a size bigger if you prefer oversized comforters, but it is also best to take exact measurements to be precise.
Bed size and mattress size are simply terms that are used interchangeably to describe the size of either your bed or your mattress. When people refer to a king-size bed, it would mean that you would need a king-size mattress with it. Be sure to always check the exact dimensions regardless of the name or the size. Since sizing standards vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, you must compare and take note of the size you are looking for while making a bedding item/ accessories purchase.
What's the time??
It's time for a sheet joke
What did the blanket say when it fell off the bed?
Oh, sheet!
Hahaha, let's dig right into sheets!!
Umm….that’s not what I meant, Clara. I meant let’s get to understanding sheet size….
When it comes to shopping for bedsheets, you need to be careful. You may have some room for error when it comes to the size of duvet covers, comforters, and also flat sheets, but not when it comes to fitted sheets. When it comes to fitted sheets, you need to be more accurate. Otherwise, it would be too loose and keep drifting off or too tight to even stay in place! Take note that each size comes with a set of specific length and width measurements, so you should take a close look at the thickness of your mattress. Fitted sheets are meant to exactly fit your mattress, which means you better be exact, or you might be up all night trying to adjust the length of your sheet. With a large sheet, you might still have some room for adjustment by tucking it under the mattress, but with a small fitted sheet, you won’t even be able to fit it over the mattress.
Before shopping for bedsheets, make sure you know the depth of your mattress. The thickness of your mattress is the size of your mattress from top to bottom. It is essential to know the depth/ thickness when purchasing new sheets as it may alter the fit size of standard sheets.
When buying a fitted sheet, you have to be very precise with the measurements, they need to be very close to your mattress to ensure a proper fit. The best way to measure the size of a fitted sheet is it look at the thickness of your mattress. The pocket depth of your sheet may vary from 25 cm to 45 cm, which is around 10”- 18” (inches).
As for a flat or stand-alone sheet, you don’t have to worry too much about the thickness of your mattress.
A bit of simple advice for flat sheets: the bigger the size the better it stays tucked in!
It is important to understand the length and width adjustments when it comes to buying a flat sheet. Keep in mind to align the long side of your sheet to the long side of the bed, many people don’t place their sheets in the correct way and realize that they keep coming off.
A noticeable difference between those two is that a fitted sheet comes with four corners whereas a flat sheet is simply a piece of fabric with length and width measurements. There are three main things you should keep in mind when shopping for fitted sheets- thread count, pocket depth (measure the thickness of your mattress), and strength. You can read all about the importance of thread count here, but just to sum it up, it helps measure the durability of your sheet. Pocket depth refers to the depth/ thickness of your mattress and helps determine if your sheet will be tucked in properly or not. This is an essential factor when buying a fitted sheet. The strength of your sheet can be checked by looking at the quality of fiber used to make your sheet.
